10k vs 5k mile oil change

I work at a Toyota dealership and people always ask if they should do 10k like Toyota recommends. I just tell them that I personally do not believe in 10k oil changes and if they would like to keep their car a long time to stick to 5k but the choice is theirs.

 

I find him to very informative and a straight shooter. I have watched quite a few of this videos.

He also has a little segment about the other extremely controversial debate…the Tundra’s lack of a transmission cooler.

Simply put I would trust his Toyota mechanical advise and his skills as a mechanic.

Yup yup!! I agree! I have always changed oil in both vehicles every five thousand miles or six months regardless, and have never had any engine problems. It works for me,,, others might think differently.???

 

AMD has changed my mind on OCIs. I was using very expensive oil and going 10k between changes (even though the oil manufacturer says it is good for longer). He talks about why cheap oil and a shorter OCI is better for your vehicle in this video:

 

I do oil analysis every 2 yrs. I do 5k intervals. The reports tell me the oil is still good at 5k. I don’t extend past that. No sense in running a weakened oil

I keep Toyotas about 10 years.

Ive always done 5k but this guy vindicates what I was suspecting for years. I really like this guys channel, I highly recommend watching his videos. I believe he is in Chicago area.

 

Wow. I thought that with synthetic, I was good for 10,000. What this guy is saying makes total sense to me. I bought a 79 mustang with the turbo 4 cylinder in it new. Changed the oil on that thing religiously every 2000 miles. Traded it at 115,000 with absolutely no burning of oil or mechanical problems. I will amend my oil changing habits. I'm sure the dealership will be happy to take my money more frequently.

 

Turbos even more often, I'd do 4K on that and yeah it comes around Often.

 

5k is the way! For peace of mind I use & will keep using quality (Amsoil)

 

How many signatures?

 

Man.......maybe I'm going back to 5K changes. I'm just over 6K on the current oil. I can also try out the Fumoto that I installed during the last change.

 

I go 5k and use the SS Amsoil. I also dump a can of BG in for good measure. I might have problems but feel pretty confident engine issues won't be one.

I got a oil analysis done after 13 months/5k miles doing frequent towing and short trips with Amsoil Signature Series 0w20.

Blackstone said that oil doesn’t degrade due to time and to go by the miles instead. Based on their tests I still had plenty of life left in the oil.

I’m thinking I’ll start pushing out to 8k and test again before I push further to 10k, but odds are when I notice a year has passed I’ll probably feel the urge to change it due to habit. Just feels wrong to extend it that far even if the data says otherwise.

 

I watched that yesterday. Wondered about the quality of oil from the dealers comments.

 

Vid says vehicle was maintained by 2 dealers, so using toyo oil which is (I think) Mobil synth with some extra additives (moly?). So pretty good stuff.

 

I use the Amsoil flush on my first change with a new (to me) car and get an analysis on the second. If all is well I do the flush yearly.

It's funny, he specifically says Amsoil is good but too pricey, I'm happy to pay that extra cost on a car I plan to have forever.

April '23 will be the next flush.

 

This is the one issue I've got with my dealership. They're fantastic on everything else - *BUT* if they're doing the 'free oil changes' (I get 4) they're doing it at 10K, by God.

I said "Fine, long as you document that I asked to get it earlier; that it states in the manual that 'severe duty' is defined as off-road driving (I live on a gravel road), and that this is NOT used as a reason to deny an engine warranty fix (I've got a lifetime engine warranty) if I encounter any issues."

They did all of the above. So once I'm done with my 4th oil change and I have to pay for them, I'll probably do them every 6K or so.

 

About 10 years ago, my wife & daughter were driving past a dealer and saw a 330 BMW. They were in my Daughter's 2006 Mazda 6 and my wife traded it for the BMW (and gave my daughter our CR-V.) I opened the oil cap to see the dreaded BMW 15k oil change nightmare of sludge.

I took it back & got the 6 back, we ended up with a new Camry hybrid.

 

I do 5k changes. Even on my Cummins which was nearly all highway (not a lot of stop and go and idling), I stuck to around 6k on full synthetic.

The biggest thing for me isn’t so much the oil, but the filter. I just dont trust a paper/fiber element to filter efficiently much past that amount of miles. And rather than bother with trying to do a filter change only, just go ahead and change the oil with it. I did both fuel filters every other oil change also, but thats a little more crucial on a diesel.

 

Ok I’ll be that guy, my 2014 limited 4wd going on almost 118k miles oil change every 10k miles no issues. There’s plenty others who change oil at 10k with more mileage than me reported no issues……..

 

He states in the video that dealerships do not use toyota oil but the cheapest bulk oil they can find for their oil changes. It’s still 0w-20 full synthetic but not toyota or mobile 1

 

Another interesting point he brings up is in regards to amsoil oil. He doesn’t recommend their oil going 10k miles either, and it’s pricey. why pay double over other premium full synthetic oil, if you’re still changing every 5k miles.

 

I got the Sequoia with 126k, it had full records with regular changes but I baseline my cars as if they had no maintenance.

Blackstone said my oil looked good but I like to clean out my motor.

For me it's "cheap" peace of mind. Also, I have been driving very little since 2020 so my changes have actually been less than 5k

I have found that buying Pennzoil Ultra Platinum on Amazon for $26 per 5 quart bottle and changing at 5k on all my vehicles has been both cost-effective and good insurance for the engines.

 

If the YouTube dude is correct then it can mean only one thing: ToyCorp is aware of the issue but denying knowledge thereof or ToyCorp has no idea this is an issue.
