is 2014 or 2015 Tundra a reliable truck?

    Hello,

Recently I found out my 06 Lexus GX470 has busted front evaporator core and frame damage from rust which will cost min 5k to fix the issues.

As I always wanted to own a pick up truck, I started doing research and looks like either 2014-2015 Tundra or 2014 F-150 would be a good option for me that will fit under my budget.

Do Tundra from those years would have same rust issue? What are some of the common problems of Tundra from those years? and lastly what are the things I should be checking when buying a Tundra from those years?

I did research from carcomplaints and consumer reports but I want to hear from the actual owners.

Also, I plan on using mostly as a family car (will need to install two car seats in the back) and occasional offroading. I wonder if I am looking car for the use or if Tundra is too much of vehicle for my intended use...

    Any feedback will be appreciated!

I have a 2014. Has been outstanding in terms of reliability (just under 200k kms- highway). Only issues I have had is needing a reflash on the head unit and the rear pinion seal replaced. So far as rust, nothing significant has come up, I undercoat it which I am sure helps in northern Ontario. I don’t believe the Gen 2/2.5 trucks have the frame rust issues that occurred in Gen 1:crapstorm:I did have paint come off on my door sills, that is one common item but an easy fix.
One thing to check might be brakes (as these are expensive wear items) but again, still have only done once since new. I could afford new but plan to keep her for a good while yet as has been solid. I would avoid Fords of the same era- or in general (former F-150 5.4L owner).

I bought a 2015 Limited Crewmax 4x4 in 2018. It had almost 50,000 miles on it. I have put nearly 30,000 miles on it since I have owned it. It has been the best truck I have ever owned. I have made two trips of almost 5,000 miles each towing a 29' travel trailer trailer from Idaho to Mississippi and back through Texas at 65 mph. It performed flawlessly on both trips. The only maintenance I have done so far is regular oil changes and a transmission/differential service (I probably didn't need the transmission service, but felt after towing our trailer, that it was probably a good idea. I haven't noticed any rust issues on mine.

My brother-in-law has a 2014 that he's had since new. It has about 80k on it now. He pulls a boat and utility trailers with it regularly, and it has been subjected to the intense Minnesota winters for years. He has had no issues with it. Just routine maintenance. He loves it and has converted several friends over to Tundras as well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a well taken care of used one.

I have a 2014 Limited CM…bought new…still have it…94K on it now…added the TRD S/C at 6700 miles and its been great. Tows anything I need, 5k lbs boat, utility trailer etc.

Other than normal maintenance the only thing I have replaced is the belt tensioner. Now I don’t abuse it and do all the scheduled mnx and get the oil changed every 5k miles vs 10K miles, so how a truck has been treated matters BIG TIME if you are buying used. Something about going 10K miles between oil changes doesn’t sit right with me. Look closely and carefully.

I have been in Iowa since 2018 and haven’t had any issues with rust.

One gripe is the head unit has been a bit of a disappointment…screen is largely unreadable in daylight and the sound is fairly lousy.

Only thing I would have done different is gone with the Platinum trim level.

Cant go wrong with the 2014.

Wow. Any major repairs? How much of that is towing?

I had 2014 double cab. Truck was awesome and the reason I have a 2019 now (wanted a crewmax and larger gas tank). The only issue I had with the 2014 was the door locks went out on it. Dealer wanted $2k+ (maybe more it was a long time ago) to fix and I’m not good enough to do it myself so I just left the truck unlocked all the time. Nothing in there that wasn’t easily replaceable and when there was, manually locking each door was annoying but successful.

i recommend a 2016 if it’s in your budget (and a crewmax because of the car seats) for the single best improvement Toyota made to these pigs: 38 gal fuel tank.

I have no trouble with my 2014 SR5. I do need to replace the driver side door actuator. For now I use the key to lock the driver door. I pull 5060 lb dry weight 29’ travel trailer a few times a year with no problems. A guy at the dealership told me when I asked about any past recalls (I bought it used) that most problems were worked out by the time 2014 came out. And the 5.7 V8 has enough power for me. Although a super charger would be nice. :thumbsup:I wanta do more mods and upgrades.

I do have a squat in the rear when the camper is hooked up. I’m still debating on how I want to address the issue. Many ways to deal with it but I’ll probably go with new heavy rated springs.

2015 Tundra trd pro. With 85k no issues on my end. Can't go wrong with either year. My opinion

I have a 2015 Tundra 5.7 4x4 and have about 96,000 miles and I love my truck! No issues, I do the routine maintenance and etc. I have a stillen intake and a 3in Toyo tech lift. Now I'm doing a exhaust on it

    Question to you all

I wish I could afford a dirty deeds exhaust, but $1500, is a lil steep for me. Saw some YouTube videos of a 3in Carven mufflers, and making it true dual with dual tailpipes. Any reasons for concerns if I do this? Cutting out the factory muffler and putting 2 Carven 3in mufflers, and going dual exhaust.

Loss of low end torque going to a 3” dual system.

Edit: Also, after seeing the pic you posted with the snow, that means you have road salt. Cutting the muffler or any of the exhaust piping to weld in some new mufflers or tail pipes will insure that your muffler & piping falls off in 2-3 years. Ask me how I know. Lots of guys on the forums selling a BAM muffler setup after swapping for a different size (going 10" to 6" or visa versa based on their needs). Not sure if you just want the sound or the look of true duals, but give Keith a call. He can at least tell you what you're looking for and then you can see if you can find it here or on FB groups, etc.
