Your correct. And the axle end is closer to a 3/4-1 ton truck. Do you have the rear end clunk when you put yours in gear? If not you most likely will. This is a design by Toyota to aid in heat to allow our gears to expand. I have it in mine and I have towed from Ohio to deep in Florida a few times and other places. At this time I still will not trade my Tundra for another truck. I love diesels but the feds are killing those as well.

 

Correct if it’s solely based on hitch. The leaf springs and rear axle says it shouldn’t be towing the majority of 5th wheels

What a teaser! Details of the camper weight, pass grade %, length etc. I think we can all learn from this type of information.
I will admit doing something really stupid (early on in my towing days). I pulled my 7K+ camper over the Teton Pass. The only thing dumber than going up was going down the other side! It is 6 miles of 10% grade and peaks at 10,000’ elevation. I could only do 30mph at the top and brakes were very hot at the bottom. I now carry East/West Mountain Directory and study it before traveling. Truck is still chugging along, 207K and running strong.

Brakes! The weakest part of the Tundra, not payload IMO. Tundra brakes are not often discussed, but when towing they can be a huge problem if not maintained.

Tundra brakes are the best of the half tons, and the 5.7 is likely the best at engine braking too (haven't tried the GM 6.2 for this). The leaf springs are certainly the weakest point, then it's followed by whatever the reason the axles are only rated at 4100 lbs GAWR.

Also here we're noting a 2-300 lb difference in brochure payload and door sticker payload. Imagine a F150 forum where that difference can be 2000 lbs!

 

I'll bet you FedExTrucker's Unicorn high payload Tundra that the DOT didn't adjust the yellow timing for that light properly. Either they didn't add time when the speed was increased to 55 or the grade wasn't considered. The formula to set yellow light timing considers worst case traction conditions, reaction time and the worst stopping vehicle that's permitted on that road as well as grade. Somebody screwed up and it wasn't you.

 

I kinda like the idea of letting everyone buy helicopters... It'll get a ton of jackasses off the road (at least until they pancake their newly acquired helicopter on one), and it will definitely fix stupid much faster!

This is why I don't mind letting my speed drop as I go uphill, as you never know what might be over the crest. I know a lot of guys on the internet will say your truck is shit if it can't maintain 80 mph uphill in overdrive with your fully loaded trailer in tow...

A former coworker of mine loved the Allison and exhaust brake in his Duramax when towing his ~14k lb fifth wheel.

 

My dad taught me this. I've never ridden a bike and he hasn't had one since the 70s.

This is one thing that people forget, what goes up must come down! Just today I was towing my trailer through West Virginia and my F-250 tows it like a dream. I was coming down an 8% grade over 6 miles and was really working the engine braking, truck brakes and trailer brakes to keep the speed under control. Just because your Tundra can drag a 15,000 lb trailer up the face of El Capitan doesn’t mean it can drag it down in a controlled fashion.

 

The true test for my truck will be the first time we tow our trailer over the Rockies and across the continental divide to the Kootenay mountains.

 

I'm not assuming it's bulletproof... I'm in Memphis where people on I240 find out if their vehicle is bulletproof or not. I don't want to find out...

 

I’ll see 3-4k RPMs holding 3rd gear going down steep grades with the boat hooked up - no pedal driving is how I roll loaded downhill.

 

I'm a little late to the ongoing party but yes the insurance will cover your "stupidity". There are so many different senerios but I'll use one that seems to come up a lot. If the will call him "Happy Camper" say is involved in an accident where maybe he was not clearly at fault the other party's attorney or insurance carrier may request copies of what the "Happy Camper" was towing. If the "Happy Camper" was say towing over the limits of the vehicle he was towing the attorney or insurance could argue that if he was within his towing limits the accident may have not happened at all therefore he would want to pin the entire accident on the "Happy Camper"

Honestly its not worth towing over the trucks limits no matter what the situation is. We all learn from that "This is the first time this is happened to me" moments so why not try and no go through it and tow with the appropriate rig. Your insurance company will be happy to not have to shell out so much money from your policy to cover say injuries to another party becuase of your carelessness because if you knowingly tow over the trucks limits its your carelessness and it will cost more

Since you're talking about Memphis I assume you've using the word bulletproof in a literal fashion?

 

I have a hard time believing this truck has a 1530 lb payload. My old 2021 Limited was only 1130 and this one is a limited from what I can tell. I know the older ones had less electronics in them but not 400 lb worth
