I agree with you, the manual states this truck is a passenger vehicle primarily (Sorry, @FedExTrucker it's true). Do you know the Bound For Nowhere couple? Thought I saw them answer a comment on some video or IG post that said it was boxed.

Regardless, I'm not sure when I may have indicated that I endorse doing these things in a stock truck. You yourself have modified your truck, and you do things with it that go beyond it's stated purpose and stock limits.

 

1. I'm just enjoying the back and forth, and in no way am I taking your comments a defense of the OP. This is all just for fun. In your first point you are still latching onto the weight number rather than the percentage though. Like I said, going 1000 over in one is not comparable to going 1000 over in the other. Yes, the Nevada idiot was an extreme example, and it wasn't ever used to draw an equivalency, at least not from my perspective, but only to show that overloading has consequences. Sure, nobody is running without the brakes and such, but the OP is driving his Tundra like a tractor trailer with cruise control and a massive load. He is then using his past experience with completely unrelatable vehicles with his CDL as justification for improper use of his Tundra.
2. Unless something changed very recently; you do not need a CDL to haul over 26,000 lbs rated trailers. You need a CDL to get paid to haul over 26,000 lbs rated trailers. Just like you need an air brake endorsement on that CDL if you're going to get paid, but anyone with the money can go by a giant motorhome with airbrakes and run it privately on a regular license. The Nevada guy was on the job and that's why those charges happened.
3. I live in Wyoming. Familiar with ranch trucks. Not uncommon for there to be the around town/road truck for anything that leaves the property and then the "farm truck" that never does. Even if it does, it's not hauling those oversize and overweight items when it does leave the property. Those still get moved in a legal fashion. I've used my CDL to do it for a ranch. They didn't use their 1 ton diesel to go 300 miles and pick up a bailer. They sent me in a semi with a low boy trailer to do it.
4. Just as you're not endorsing the OPs actions, I'm not endorsing the overlander flatbed's. I wasn't really clear. I was pointing out the completely different approach. The flatbed people aren't coming on the forum with a stock truck saying "Tundras are built for this." They are openly saying that the Tundra will in no way handle this without heavy modification. It's a completely different mindset than the OP who is implying that a few decades of CDL driving qualify him to determine what a pickup truck is capable of more than the industry standards and the people who built it. If there is a holier than thou attitude it's the OP's.

 

If using it for fun is beyond stated purpose…, the only stock limits exceeded are performance, not weight and definitely not towing. Don’t even have a hitch on it.

 

Tennessee, and particularly the Memphis / Olive Branch areas, quite literally has the worst drivers I've ever experienced, and I've been almost everywhere in the US.

Worse than the truckers are the insane idiots in stolen cars that drive in the most aggressive and yet inattentive way that I've ever seen. All of the safety rails on the side of the freeway are smashed to hell. Every 10 miles, on average, is a burnt out car on the shoulder. It's truly an insane place.

 

That's for towing, payload has no standard as of yet.

I don't know, but when you find out, please let me know. When we drive out to Colorado, we experience this phenomenon all the way there, whether we're on 24, 57, 64, or 70. It is wildly frustrating.

Memphis...ugh. No more needs to be said. St Louis is pretty close right behind it, though.

I can understand and respect the points you are making, including the last paragraph, except the difference is that folks don't come to a forum and ask, 'hey I'm thinking about doing 45 in a school zone what do you guys think?'... They just do it.

Folks don't come here to get approval or to get someone to concur that it is acceptable/safe for them to speed, run a light, etc! But, they do come here (a lot) and ask for "permission" to 'violate the load sticker' when towing (not all but some). On the other side of the coin, there are some folks that simply don't know or understand what all of those numbers mean and are truly asking for advice.

I think we owe it to the folks that are really seeking good advice to steer them in the right direction; not to inflate the trucks capabilities; and certainly not to put an inexperienced driver and the people around him/her in harms way by giving shitty advice.

Please understand, I wasn't saying you in particular were giving shitty advice or that the OP of this thread was even soliciting ours (which he wasn't). I'm just saying that when people start searching for answers related to their towing/capability questions regarding these trucks, I'd like to think that we as a community of Tundra owners would do our best to do right by them. That's all!!!

 

It's not just TN brother! The problem is that any and every company governs our trucks at 65. There are a few that govern them at 63... So yes I catch up with Walmart, Old Dominion, Estes, and many others with no problem. Then I get out to pass and they bump their cruise up another notch. OR we were climbing a gradual grade and I was passing fairly quickly because I was lighter than the other guy. Well you crest the hill and he speeds up and now I'm stuck out there clogging up the hammer lane. This happens about a dozen times a day for me... These companies tie our hands behind our backs. I have also had large car 379 Petes all of a sudden realize they're getting passed and it's a insult to their ego or something. They'll speed up and deliberately leave me stuck out there with my 65 MPH truck... And in 5 miles when he's done getting a laugh and he speeds up and passed me on the right, all the cars that have gotten pissed at ME are now passing me on the right and arm out the window flipping me off. It was the the owner operator that can run triple digits that sped up and left me stuck out there.

There's a bill in the House or Senate to federally mandate that ALL trucks be governed at 65. Everyone needs to make sure that never happens or EVERYBODY will be doing 65 everywhere they go!

 

I agree if that gets passed that would be bad. A slippery slope to say the least.

I am against heavy, moderate, light federal government control (leave it to the states) but in the northeast the commercial truck drivers’s are among the most dangerous. I set my cruise control at about 70 and stick in the middle and right hand lanes. It’s common place to see a fully loaded 18 wheeler pass me on the right, cut me off in the middle just to whip in to the left lane.

I have driven many class B trucks and yes other motorists have little respect or understanding. And I completely understand approaching a grade with speed and then downshifting (downshifting seems like a foreign concept these days as well). HOWEVER that doesn’t mean a commercial truck driver should operate as if they are in a sports car on the highway. Owning a sports car doesn’t give you the right to operate to a point in which your putting other peoples lives in jeopardy either but at least the sport car is better equipped to handle it.

Ego is without a doubt the biggest and deadliest problem we face on our roads, hands down…

99% agree, but I think ignorance is in the running for the biggest and deadliest. If people knew, they might check their egos. I think everyone should experience a car crash (controlled) so they can see just how if works and feels. My buddy that owned a junkyard had a running car brought in and got to do a 35-40 MPH head on collision with another uncrashed junk car. With 2 crumple zones, and a speed that isn't considered by most to be fast, it was a great experience. Between that and my brief time riding a motorcycle around idiots I have definitely become a better driver.

The more I think about operating based off ego makes one ignorant and plain stupid. The reverse can be said as well. They all work hand in hand I guess…

Nonetheless, for a lack of a better term, driving emotionally is losing proposition for everyone.
