TikTok challenge to blame for wave of vehicle thefts in Charlotte, police say By Kallie Cox July 27, 2022 9:57 AM
Nearly 200 cars have been stolen in Charlotte in the past two weeks — almost a 30% uptick from what police say they are used to seeing this time of year. The majority of the stolen vehicles are 2008 Kia and Hyundai models and newer Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Detective William Wallace said. The “Kia Challenge” on TikTok is largely to blame for the increase, he said. The TikTok video — now deleted — shows individuals how to start a car with a USB cable.
Last week, 24 of 81 auto-theft cases were Kia or Hyundai models, according to records provided by CMPD. In at least two cases, vehicles were left running or unattended with keys in the ignition. So far, all suspects and persons of interest in the thefts are male juveniles, CMPD spokesperson Amanda Aycock said.
Thieves gain entry by smashing the rear passenger windows then cracking open the steering column to “hot wire” the car with a USB cord where the ignition used to be, Aycock said. This method of stealing vehicles is more invasive and can cause damage to the vehicle, Wallace said.
“Some of the things that we recommend for individuals is if you have a garage, lock your vehicle in the garage. This way it is not always accessible to the public,” Wallace said. “We want you to ... layer your vehicle with anti-theft devices. So obviously, some of the simple layers would be, locking your vehicle, not leaving it running.” Owners of Kias and Hyundais, 2008 models and later, also can use a steering wheel lock, such as The Club, Wallace said. The majority of the recent thefts have taken place in north Charlotte, data show. “We want those individuals to be aware that they could potentially be victims simply because their cars are susceptible to this trend,” Wallace said.

Way better than the Tide Pod Challenge. Poison yourself or go steal a car. But, how stupid are we becoming that some douche says I dare you with a 30 second video and people get in line.

CMPD may want to mention the possible damage to the tiktok dumbasses if they get caught by the car owner. I know a lot of folks that will adhere to the "if you are found here at night, you will be found here in the morning" line of thinking.

Tide pod challenge is natural selection. I have no problems with it; at least it's not hurting random strangers.

Completing those challenges requires one being held accountable for decisions very early in life, in most cases, by a present and powerful paternal parental figure.

Always kills me these “most stolen” vehicle list.

The “most” stolen vehicle is the vehicle the owner doesn’t want and has a reason to allow to be stolen. It might be in need of significant repair soon, it might be 2 payments behind or it may just be worth 28k with a 45k tie and GAP coverage.

I’ll guarantee you though - 85% of these stolen vehicles have 2 things in common. Every ne was taken with less than a 1/3 of a tank golf gas and they have an owner who if told the car was found Undamaged would be arguing for their insurance something was wrong and asking for a check.

Also amazes me how some people do so little to protect their cars - leave it running and walk into get a drink/pack of cigs or use the restroom then act amazed the car isn’t there anymore. Always ask - was your cell phone with you - get that look of duh and “of course”. Why did you take your cell phone with you - were you expecting a call/text or to need it for something - get throat reply of “no- but it’s a new phone - cost a lot of money…” - so just like oh…so you worry someone would steal your $1100 iPhone - but think they’d leave your 8k POS car alone ?!? I’d say roughly 25-40% of theft is some type of fraud - another 20% is plain inattention.

Pros don’t steal cars without a market for them and organized rings don’t just steal a single car when there are lots full of brand new ones that are easier to access. Most of the stuff that’s taken individually is opportunity or someone made it so simple an idiot could do it.

You want organized car theft rings? Come pay a visit to Ontario, Canada. These people started off as a bunch of thieves who mainly target Lexus RX/LX and export them to becoming a mafia of violent and cunning criminals. They are lockpicks, key programmers, exporters, and security all rolled into one. These guys will turn up to your front door in the dead of the night, either trying to enter or repeat your key fob signal. If that fails, they will pick the lock - Toyotas do not set the alarm off when the manual key is used to open the door - and use an OBD device to program a new fob. Many of them show up armed too. They do this silently in a matter of minutes. They throw fake plates on and drive it into a shipping container for it to be exported. This summer they also began trying out armed carjackings to save them time. My friend's Merc was stolen from him while he was trying to sell it. He met up in a very busy public lot, and the guys grabbed the key from him, pushed him away, locked the doors, and sped away.

The only effective preventative measures for cars is a kill switch or parking it in a locked garage. Steering wheel locks, faraday cages, etc... are only going to slow them down by a minute or two. It's fucking brutal.

How would some one disable or remove a steering wheel lock? I used to use one and they seem pretty stout.

20V drill and a good bit. Less than a minute. Probably even quicker.
