Really a strange day today - not sure what’s up but a long distant past employer called asking if I was interested in coming back…

By distant - I mean started 2002 and left in 2013. Actually worked at main HQ from 2002 until 2010 when I transferred to a branch when Mrs got a job that required us to move. Never really liked the branch I worked at - but made a lot of good friends. Basically had too many idiots in charge and eventually left - wound up taking a job in same field with a competitor a year later and have remained in the field since.

So just happened to get a message asking how things were going from someone I was friendly with a few days ago. No big deal - figured they were just saying hi or needed to borrow something (truck, tractor or tools). Asked if I ever thought of coming back home - and I just said honestly yes - but would need to be right situation/fit.

So then calls a recruiter - just asking me to send a resume and if I’d do a quick phone interview- so I said sure. Went well - said they would be in touch in next few days to talk. Guess it can’t hurt to hear them out.

Even weirder - about 3 months ago my work posted a job back home - I applied and heard NOTHING. Assuming it’s just been pulled in light of current economic situation - I can see no one has been hired and heard through the grapevine not even approved to interview candidates. Kinda pissed me off they couldn’t give a courtesy update - but it is what it is. Strange as my current job my evaluations are great - the job that called and interviewed me today - mixed bag at best. Got along great with some coworkers and management - but a few managers were not good and I wasn’t shy about calling them out. Much less diplomatic in those days and it ultimately led me to just saying F it and quitting. Never would have thought they would consider rehiring me.

Are those bad managers still there and would you be working with them? Lots of things have changed since you left... might be an overall better situation.

Well - got a call for 2nd interview today

The managers I dealt with are all long gone - hell I’m in a different state so would likely have zero contact with the few who still remain with the company.

Trying to feel them out - sounds like a couple of options available - either a work from home position if I want - or a field role locally. Pro and con to both - obviously working from home is nice - but it’s nice to get out of the house too.and that typically pays more and comes with a car.

Guess I go with it and see what they offer - worst case I just tell my current job I have an offer and see how they react. I’d still like to move back closer to home - and current job had the opportunity to offer me that eventually while keeping me happy here for the immediate future and killed that.

If I’d go back - I’d have 13 years of automatic seniority - I’m just 7 years away from gaining my pension and still have more friends with the company than I have industry wide anywhere else. Still - there’s a reason I left and even with new management - a lot of these people helped enable to poor management that ran a lot of us out last time. It’s funny - I think in an office of 30 - 17 left in a 3 year span and at least 12 went to a startup that’s now struggling hard. Wonder how many of those 12 are trying to get back in now? I made the move to a well established company - figured best to play it safe and so far it’s paid off handsomely- even if there are some big issues here too.

Well on to 2nd interview next week.

Guess we see how it goes - but current job is doing an excellent job of shooting themselves in the foot at just the wrong time.

Got the lowdown on the job I’m interviewing for - it’s pretty basic. Biggest concern is it simply may not be too challenging and I get bored quickly. That said - they do have some positions similar to what I do now - BUT it’s a travel position. Basically - your on call 24/7/365 - when not sent out somewhere you work from home (like I do now) - if called out it’s 3 weeks on and 10 days off.

Pay for the job I’m interviewing for is at if not just above my current pay - the travel job is a BIG boost…like wife could quit working because I’d make more than both of us now more. Thing is I just don’t like traveling that much - hate dying and hate being alone in a strange city stuck in a comfort inn weeks at a time. Fine if your single I guess - but I just prefer being home with my wife weekends snd nights.

Now if there were some kinda hybrid - like I do now / that could get real interesting to me. Don’t mind getting away 2-3 times a year - but 8+ trips pf 3 weeks gets old fast.

Current job just keeps dumping more and more on me - stating we are short staffed. Given we have had 100% turnover rate in the last 4 years - I can see how this is going to keep going. Lean heavy on your experienced people to fill in gaps and hope they don’t leave. If I get an offer - I think I’m gone. Current employer has jacked me around for last 6 months over stupid shit trying to save nickels. They offered a job back home - I applied (same role as I have now) and they wouldn’t even extend me a courtesy call/interview - that pretty much sealed it to me for them.

Interviewed today - went well I feel.

Said you will hear back by Tuesday next week.

Have a feeling they want me - but

    a. Can they afford me (salary range on site says they can - but they seemingly pay a lot more in Central NC than any other area in the US including some high priced areas like the PacNW - just seems odd to me).

    b. Can they offer me the right combination of work. My job now is stressful - but never boring. Working from home is nice - it just gets tiring being leaned on so heavily. This job guarantees a lower workload - but can be a bit monotonous at times. There is advancement opportunities with the company - I’m likely a step or 2 beyond this role to be honest - would be nice if they adapt it to be more of a hybrid role to meet my skills (yea - I know - that’s alot to expect - but it honestly serves both of our interest to do this - instead of having 1 person in that state doing a job - you have a 2nd who can shoulder some of the load and help out).

Well it’s getting super freaking weird now.

First - My current job (which I absolutely loved for all but the last 90 days) is getting even shittier by the second. Super stupid things like arguing with me over things under $5 - all in the name of “cost savings”. Hey - I get it - $5 times 100.000 adds up quick - but arguing over $5 total for more than a few minutes isn’t an efficient way to operate.

Then they tag me as one of their “elites” - someone who they want running point on projects. Great - I get that you cannot just toss me more $$ immediately- but at least offer a token bonus, thank you or something. Nope - all I get for my trouble is 2x the work.

So just started looking around after this unsolicited interview came up - just to feel out my worth. Applied for another job and immediately got called - did phone screen and set an interview for next week. Small place - sounds perfect - but they also get horrible reviews on the employment sites and honestly - small can be either really good or really bad in my experience - but hey, it’s just an interview and kinda gives me an idea of my max value in the market.

Now today former employer calls - it’s their HR team with an offer. Best my current salary by 15% - return under old pension plan with 15 years credit towards participation and the same with my time off credits and a higher profit share % (they give 16% of salary max and have consistently earned at least 12 the last decade). Oh - and they f I decide I want to go back to home state and work - full relocation expenses (something current job wouldn’t give me a nickel towards when I moved here to help them out).

Tough call for sure - hate changing jobs but this might be too good

Sit down, think it over. But it sounds like a good opportunity and seems like they are trying to give you a good offer.

In my experience, when a company starts to nickel and dime you, when they previously did not do that, it is a BAD sign. I would escape quickly, especially if you have a good opportunity to improve your situation.

Decision not made - it’s not as clear cut as more money = better job.

The higher offer is actually “easier” work to me - but is also a job on the road throughout the day. My current job is 100% home based with road travel as needed locally - say maybe 20% of the time.

What I do now is more varied - wear alot of different hats. That’s good and bad - good as it breaks up the monotony and honestly when you are so general - it’s hard to be faulted for minor mistakes. Start being a specialist and they expect you to know everything.

At the same time - yea, it’s nice to feel a little love from a potential employer and not just stupidity. They pulled a lot of little BS moves on me - lowered pay grade without telling me (and despite having an above meets performance and exceeds on current year (eventually gave it back but wouldn’t explain why changed to start) - sending me away for weeks on training for a program we dropped weeks later and last not even interviewing me for a lateral move I was interested in (appears job was just pulled and not being filled now - but didn’t even email/call to tell me that - absolutely ZERO communication from HR). Its not my local manager whose the problem - it’s the corporation that has a million middle management types each disconnected from the other and each trying to carve out their little kingdom. I went through this at the place that wants me now - and it led to me leaving. Took them 4 years - but they finally righted them ship I hear and it’s been good for 6 since.

    Decision keeps getting tougher.

Current employer just announced earnings and got CRUSHED (bye bye 401k…maybe next year profit sharing check)…rumbles from the headquarters already about “early retirement” (aka as forced out) and getting much stricter on the bottom line….probably not the best day to call the boss and tell him I’ve got another offer and if like you to at least match their 18% raise - and oh can we r talk about other perks they want to give me and what you guys can do to meet my offers?

Seriously - I actually hate the idea of leaving…I’m comfortable here and the bar is so low at times. That said - my coworkers are for the most part lazy (we are independent workers - but when someone screws up - it falls on teammates to fix it often), my boss is a nice enough guy - but overall clueless about the job I do and would prefer to never deal with a customer again (part of why he likes me - I generate 0 in way of complaints). But advancement opportunities are slim and the relocation is probably never going to be available to me.

Other offer gives more money, advancement and a booming company. But no guarantee the new boss won’t be worse, might wind up being a lot more work and who knows what they expect performance wise. Door number 3 (interview next week) promises even more $$ and complete independence - but they are tiny and have horrible reviews from ex employees. At least where I am now and current offer have good security.

Speaking from experience, it is no fun to have your current employer go belly-up or go irrational cost-cutting measures being taken. In my opinion you should hitch your wagon to a successful company with opportunities ahead for you. I wouldn't wait until my current company goes through cost-cutting, layoffs, etc. to move on. Just my $.02's... Good luck to you in making your decision.

Gotta agree with BossHog above. From the outside looking in, your current employer sounds less stable/secure than you seem to think it is.

If your current boss is clueless about the work you do, how will he be able to defend your position if those above him put your spot on the chopping block to save $?

I wish you nothing but the best of luck - I hope the decision you make turns out to be the right one.

I made the mistake of getting comfortable. Cost me 7 years and untold potential earnings and experience. The days of being loyal to a company are over. Take the new job, sounds like your current company has one foot in the grave so to speak.

Understand the “jump ship while you can” logic - honestly 10 years ago it would be exactly what I would have done.

Why stay knowing my current employer may be in trouble - even though it’s comfortable. Simple - having options that don’t involve working for someone else, a decent financial cushion and a wife whose income could support us alone. It’s easier to not sweat a job knowing you don’t need them as badly as they need you. I mean a get laid off tomorrow- it’s not like I couldn’t/wouldn’t find something - I’d love the just go off and do something on my own - wife’s job has benefits or worst case scenario guess Obamacare. I’d have to cut back on my spending - but I could just do something I like versus something someone tells me I have a talent for that pays well.

Is there anyone at the potential new employer that you used to work with (non-managerial) that is still there??? If so, it might be time to invite that person to dinner or out for coffee/drinks and have a sit down and discuss what's really happening within the potential new employer.

Another tactic you can try is to contact HR (of the potential employer) and request a short 'reference interview/meeting' w/3-4 people (positions) of your choice that are currently working within the potential employer. I'd suggest whoever would be your immediate supervisor, someone who holds a position and tenure close to where you'd be at, someone whose has about a year on (working in the same area), and/or the person you are replacing!

You may get a little resistance at first, but it will show both of you (you and the potential employer) a few things:

1: You are serious about your consideration
2: You are not willing to make such a huge adjustment/move for yourself and family unless it's right
3: You take a proactive approach to understanding what you are truly entering for employment
4: Money, although a motivator, is NOT the #1 factor in your decision. If they want you, they must provide an environment that is challenging, stable, pleasant to work at, and financially rewarding.
5: If they flat out refuse, what are they hiding?
6: If the company is good to its people they will be happy to set it up; this tells you they are not hiding anything from you and very proud of the relationship they have with their employees.
7: It gives you a very clear picture from various levels of the organization its goals, challenges, problems and things to either be concerned or excited about.

...just a thought; good luck w/your decision!!!!

Good thought above - I have reached out to some former co workers.

Biggest issues are - I’d be working in a different area of the country now - so while old coworkers may think things are great - locally it may be different.

Then there’s the massive move 2-3 years ago of everyone from the old job to a start up that came to town - basically new company opened up shop and went on a STUPID hiring spree - passing out stock options like they were candy at a parade. I’d say 60% of the tenured staff quit my old job (as well as other employers I worked with) - it’s actually funny - I went to my current employer around the same time. The startup offered me a nice salary and a huge stock bonus - I knew right from the start it was a huge roll of the dice - yea - if those options panned out in 5 years I’d be very well off - but options can sometimes go to zero too. My current company offered a nice package and was more established - I took the sure thing, a lot of others gambled.

4 years later I’ve gotten 3 yearly raises of no less than 8% - the startup - well options were around the $15-20 price point (stock was $30s at the time - 5 year vesting period) - today it’s just over a buck ! I heard the startup laid off 75% of staff and their big new building is a virtual ghost town - they planned for 6500 - peaked at 3,000 and currently at under 750.

I spoke with potential new employer recruiter today - just checked in to let them know I needed a few more days - which they were fine with. They actually BUMPED the financial offer too just to get me to say yes. So now I got to go to the boss Monday and say - I know the company just reported a turd of a quarter and the bean counters are likely ready to start cracking down on us - so how do you feel about matching the 15% raise I was just offered by the competition? This conversation should go over great…

If you’ve been unhappy with your current employer and they aren’t listening to your concerns, and you’ve given them ample time to come back a solution (coupled with any solutions you’ve provided) then go with your gut feeling.
I’ve had quite a few job offers, without even having to apply/interview for more $ but I declined. I’m happy with my employee and they take excellent care of me as I do them.

My general advice to friends is "don't take the counter-offer" and my general attitude as an employer is "don't make the counter-offer." Even if things stabilize for 6 months, over the long run you're going to follow that first foot out the door.

YMMV, these are complex decisions with a lot of factors. Good luck!

    So the saga continues.

Told current boss - of course they don’t want to lose me, big plans - yadda yadda - I just said look - here’s the offer - if you can match we have something to talk about potentially. Says I’m in line for a pay bump / but they weee just waiting. Told them might not want to wait too long then (didn’t go into if you think I’m worth more - why aren’t you paying me fairly now).

Also contacted the potential employer - countered their latest offer with a slight bump. More just to see if I can get it. Did it politely and didn’t ask for anything outrageous - making it clear if they can’t do it they are still in the running - but if they can meet me we can dispense with the discussion and I’m in.

Nice position to be in - having a job and having the opportunity to have another employer who are like make s bid. Hey - worst case I guess I stay at the current job at a higher rate of pay. I’m not completely miserable now / just play it out I guess and see who shows they want me more.

Take the new job. You have what? 2/3 of the time you already need for the pension. Those are hard to come by now-a-days.

True - that helps a lot / of course no guarantees they couldn’t change it tomorrow.

Getting even more interesting with a new interested company emailing me a few minutes ago. I applied a couple of weeks ago as it’s a “dream” opportunity. I actually reached out to someone who taught a course I recently attended who worked there previously for insight and details - got a lot of good info and have a feeling a contact was made on my behalf to get me the interview.

Another day - another 2 request to meet/interview.

Did not realize the labor market was this hot for my field - I mean I knew places are scrambling for entry level laborer for example or certain blue collar skills - but white collar stuff though.

1 is a head hunter - said I’m probably 25-30% below market salary wise - I take their “estimates” like I would a realtor trying to get a listing in my house - overly hopeful best cases - I mean until I agree to place myself with them - they have nothing to sell…so they gotta sell me on sale going with them first - and easiest way to do that is promise more.

Other is a small town operator near where the wife is originally from. Just talked with them and seem very interested. It’s one of a few places I’d consider relocation - and it’s a small group so I am meeting people I’d be working with directly - not some recruiter who puts me over to a manager who may or may not be there in 6 months. Means a lot to me when you meet someone knowing they have 25 years at a place and they have a very low turnover rate. Guess I’m just too old fashioned like that though - as mentioned there is no loyalty in todays business - and to a point it’s understood on both sides.

You said central NC and it pays well. I'm right outside Raleigh, and house prices/rent have increased insanely last year or so. Probably part of why big money offered. But, if it's a traveling position and you're removing home, so you have family or friends to help you look, you don't have to live in whatever city proper, might be able to find something reasonable. Good luck with it!

I’m towards Winston - reality is everywhere prices are exploding though on housing. Or at least were - the move in interest rates likely has stopped the explosive pricing / not going down just yet - just going up less.

Seriously did not expect this hot of a job market - 2 more interview request today (accepted both - both very good fits and gave me salary ranges above the offer that started all this).

Don’t know - getting a bit annoyed with my current employer - coming out and saying you know I’m underpaid and have been working on it - but then saying “I was going to wait until December to revisit it” - and when pressed as to why Dec - said “I will have been your manager for 2 years in December so that way I have a better case to make because I can report what I see daily” - just took me wrong.

I’ve been here 4 years now - 4 yearly reviews from 3 different managers including my current - all say much the same and rate me as an exceeds performer in my role 4 times. I think the reviews speak for themselves - no need to await your personal stamp of approval.

There have been other things too - but it’s little stall tactics like that which just annoy me. Think I’m worth a million dollars - pay me a million. Think I’m worth $12 an hour - tell me you will only give me 12 bucks and allow the market to determine if I’m worth more. Don’t play this “I think your worth a million but I can get approval to pay minimum wage BS” (obvious I make more than minimum - just exegerating the point). Pay me what value I bring to the company / we are a for profit organization- I help you make a fair profit and you pay me fairly or I leave and your profit goes down - it’s capitalism 101.

I've left positions twice (admittedly, over 30 years) because of stalls. Nothing personal, I'm being offered solidly more than you're paying, and you're not showing a willingness to move on it!
