Have a 2015 Platinum CrewMax. My starter is having issues and when AAA came to jump start, as I thought it was the battery, the guy got under the truck and tapped on the starter while I turned the ignition. Fired right up. This morning won’t start again, so I want to locate the starter to tap on it.

I have searched the internet and cannot find specifics for the 2015 starter location. Many much older years and does not seem to apply. Searched here and found nothing as well.

Any advice, especially pics or a link, would be much appreciated so I can tap it to start it to drive to my mechanic! Yep, I should have had the guy show me where it was, but I was so excited to have my car start I didn’t think of that.

This thread has some good pictures showing the location. https://www.tundras.com/threads/starter-replacement.32381/

Passenger side, middle of the engine block where the transmission and engine mate together. Its tucked in to the block behind the exhaust manifold. Laying under the the truck behind the RF tire (under the passenger front door) is generally the easiest way to get to it.

When they are starting to go out normally giving them a good wack will give you another start or two but your time is limited before that wont work anymore. One day stuck on the side of the road, i used the tire tool from my factory jack ect to give mine a good hit or two and that worked.

If towed to a Toyota dealer the cost will be somewhere north of $24,000.

Was gonna say if you had to tap it I wouldn't drive it since it's about to fully fail, but I guess you learned that already :D

It's maybe a 4 hour job if you don't know what you're doing for reference if you want to do it yourself. Unbolt the passenger engine mount nut and lift the engine an inch or two and it'll slide right out.

    aGREED! Ha!

My trusty mechanic has it. $750 out the door. Cheaper if he can avoid removing the exhaust section. He has worked on our Sequoia, several Highlanders, Lexus Gx470 and now my new/old Tundra over 10 years. Just got the Tundra in March, but it’s a 2015.

Trust them and know they will fix it up right.

I would say $750 isn’t highway robbery and fair. Assuming he is buying you good quality parts also. I’m pretty sure it can be a pain in the ass to do the job.

I think another guy got his done for 600 somthing. Probably hard to find anyone would will do it for much less

I'm thinking one of the only parts that sucks to take off more than that is the alternator. Luckily I had mine replaced under warranty already.

I really trust these guys as I have been customer for a long time and they are very fair. Had a couple of times where they over estimated the labor and knocked that off the bill when I was paying. Also, they use OEM parts and I expect this will be as well.
