My dad lives by a calving ground - from about March through mid September there’s usually 10-20 head hanging out on his 60 acres.
And then, overnight, ghosts of the forest

It’s common for hunted species to be coming out of the woodwork until literally the evening before hunting season and then

    Gone…like figments of your imagination.

Yeah, finally wrapping up the chaos. Still a few hours on this shift, so it could always catch on fire again.

Traffic routing was collapsing. Basically calls wouldn't go through the normal routes so it was causing congestion and call issues. Had to contact a few different departments to get parts and personnel out to replace stuff. Still not 100% but much better than it was.

I mean, sorta, but not really. I watch the cellular, landline, and internet networks for all our customers. Also watching the links/trunks to the outside world, and that was what was breaking. Then there were about 6 different maintenance things going on and they were conflicting with each other and exacerbating the issues.

I should clarify, where IT is watching things internal to the company like firewalls, network security, and setting up servers and such for various business functions, my department is monitoring the actual telecom network. I don't know jack about IT networking and the like. I'm not that kind of smart.

No. We are a cellular provider just like the big ones (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) so we are providing that service to individuals. We do have corporate accounts as well. We also provide landline services (those are mostly businesses these days) and internet.

Ahhh okay. I'm starting to get it now. So is it an all or nothing job where all is either boring or hectic? Or do you get a happy medium most times?

Definitely has an ebb and flow. Weeks go about like so:
    • Wednesday = 50/50 shot of chaos or smooth. Usually a happy medium because work is ongoing but people have hit their stride for the week. There's a bit of a flow.
    • Thursday = 80% smooth sailing. The flow from Wednesday carries over and people are looking forward to the weekend.
    • Friday = 90% easy. Nobody want to break shit on Friday because they don't want to work the weekend. Weekends are high traffic for customers, so no carrier wants stuff broken, so they tread lightly.
    • Saturday = 95% cake walk. Most of the time things have been bundled up enough they will hold until Monday, so everyone is enjoying the weekend.
    • Sunday = 95% easy breezy worry free. Same thing as Saturday. Most carriers aren't working weekends so things aren't being broken.
    • Monday = Shit show. Everything that was left over from Friday and all the issues of the weekend that didn't warrant an after/off hours call out.
    • Tuesday = Shit Show. Nobody, in or out of the company, is in the swing of things. Still recovering from Monday and hating the week.

That's the baseline. Weather, equipment failures, or idiots with backhoes cutting fiber optic lines can always turn any day into a shit show.

I seeee. The overall pulse of where I work is all or nothing with it heavily leaning towards all for a fair bit now. As far as my specific position, it's a complete coin toss each and every time I come in. Sometimes it's a breeze and I just coast through the shift with consistent but not demanding work (as you know even good days are long though because 12 hours is literally half the day lol) and some days are a 12-hour battle and I just feel like laying down as soon as I get through the door.

Can confirm accurate for other regions as well. September 30, a whitetail in Texas will grunt at you. The next day bow season starts, and they're eating at night and nowhere to be found after dawn. Except Spring Turkey. I think they're just too horny to be sly. About 30 years ago I was walking to a stand, shotgun in hand, and saw 4 toms in a pageant with each other - not a hen in sight. I got 30 yards away from them before any decided to show me any attention at all, then it was a straight 'TF you lookin at, bitch?' Took two of them home with me.

This is on Tunnel Mountain in Banff National Park. There were a ton more on the other side of the highway but my pictures suck.

One tripped out on high pressure, (rooftop cooling unit) couldn't get it to reset. Compressor A was frosty, compressor B was scorching hot. @FrenchToasty probably knows what's up. That one will go to the Hvac contractor this morning.

The other issue was on a 480V exterior wall unit (heat & cool). The fan came loose on the motor shaft and got jammed up on the motor case. I pulled it all apart and locked down the setscrews, back in service!
