Usually it’s got dirt, grass, and random weeds also stuck to it.
And she thinks I want it shoved into my crotch like that

Our shepherd got skunked, called our vet for a recommendation. They said bring her in and $50 you’ll have a scent free dog. Best $50 I think I’ve ever spent!

So, this one lands at the cargo terminal of the airport (I think he's about 16 weeks old at this point, so a little older than the one in the above video)... We load the crate into the back of the truck and drive to a little section of the parking lot w/some grass and landscaping so I can give him a break and let him out of the crate before we drive home. I open the back of the truck, and he's just staring out the side and won't make eye contact...


... I get him out, clip a leash to him and set him on the ground next to the small tree. He looks at the tree, looks at the truck, and then nails me in the calf. WTH??? So, I open his mouth and take him off my leg, pick him up and move to another tree. Set him back down again and pow!!!! Right back on the same calf! Dude, those little puppy teeth hurt, WTH???? I took him off again, picked him up, put him back in the crate, drove home and he's been w/us since (2014)...

He a shepherd?

 

He's actually a working line Dutch Shepherd.... Blood lines of the DS are heavily influenced w/ very strong Malinois blood lines; other breeds' (mastiff, pit, etc...) were introduced to stabilize the intense high drive of the Malinois. Basically, they were trying to stabilize and balance the prey drive of the Malinois, and the end result is referred to a lot of times as a Malinois on steroids. At the inception of the breed, there was really no concern for "confirmation of the breed" or a "breed standard"; the only concern was the dogs ability to work.

If you search "KNPV Dutch Shepherd", you'll find some history and more detail of the breed if you are interested. They are known for being a very hard and serious animal. Here is a photo of my first DS. I worked him on the street for several years, and I'll tell you, he was a handful, but I would not trade the experience (he taught me a lot)...


...that dog was on a different level!!! He wasn't really large, but he was very serious and loved to fight; he also had an incredible amount of hunt drive!!!

He was the dog I posted that was at a full sprint and the photo had captured him mid-stride.... The brindle coat is a bit more traditional for the DS, but they can be all black or predominantly fawn w/shading and appear to be a Malinois.

Our SIL is an officer in our former home town. He’s had a K-9 for about 4 years now. He’s a Mal, and while he’s not working he’s a completely different animal. They also will foster K-9’s who don’t make it through the training and will work with them too get them homed. They had. Dutch for a few months, the first time I was up for a visit I walked in the front door and looked up at the Dutchy at the top of the stairs, those eyes peering down at me? Sent chills down my spine! The initial look of pure evil was chilling. Too think what that dog was capable of was mind boggling. Fast forward an hour later we were best buds, and if he’d of been a she? She’d of been riding home with me…. Beautiful dog. His only down fall was charging a door. Couldn’t get him too charge through it. Too much hesitation.

I mean, there's no way you can possibly be a responsible owner that understands the needs of a breed and makes sure to meet them in order to have a happy, well mannered, and polite pup. Pure madness.
