A friend from Arizona was just here visiting and, at my request, brought me some pieces of cholla skeleton for my knife handles. My question to the crue is; what colors should I consider dying the skeleton pieces and what tint colors should I consider for the casting epoxy, plus the most appealing combinations.
I’m probably going to ask this also over on the knife thread…572A68AC-3B1F-4A1C-82F1-ABAB86EBB667.jpg

As you can probably guess, I'm partial to blue. How bout a dark, almost iridescent or slightly metallic blue?

If you're going with clear resin, white might make a nice contrast to a pattern weld blade. Whatever brings out the metal, though.

Yeah, he brought me quite a bit but I’m only going to do these 4 to start with. Blue, for sure. Red too. Then maybe Aztec gold, and green?

Also, I don’t have to do it completely a single color, I can try ‘double dying’. Maybe red at one end and blue at the other?

I’d like to figure out a way to do a red, white and blue combination. Not really sure how to get there, but with some experimenting I probably will get it figured out

Thank you for this. It’s always inspirational for me to see some of the stuff others are doing. There’s a risk of getting gaudy instead of artsy. Does that make sense? Sometimes it’s a fine line, always, it’s subjective.

Oh for sure. I think the sparkly rocks are a bit much, personally. I like the lightly burned wood with amber coloring in it and the last pic with the marble green the most, but that's just me.

If I had/wore more turquoise jewelry, I’d be all about that flashy one at the top. I’m not a fancy man, and most metals usually irritate my skin.

I’m kind of in the “natural” camp with clear resin.
Let the beauty of the intricacy of the cholla skeleton and the Damascus steel be the centerpiece

There's so many ways to do those handles, Ray. This guy opted for a substrate to show through clear epoxy with them. Dyed epoxy. Dyed handles. Burnt handles. So. many. choices. :goingcrazy: I look forward to seeing what you decide to do with these. :)

I think someone said orange or something along those lines. I think. Maybe that would be good. :D

On the cholla can you torch the wood part for a dark effect and orange resin the holes?

I think a way to get that effect might be to have the orange in a syringe and inject a small squirt at each hole after it’s submerged in the clear.
