Same here and watch for the TC to unlock. Then S4 until the crest of the hill. When towing, cruise control get shoved in with the rest of the nannies. I like to zoom climb with mine letting the obese beast unleash its advantage.

The app is ODB Fusion running on my iPhone XS.

Agreed, it would be nice to be able to share dashboards... this one probably took 25min to make. This was just one of many Dashboards I was testing. A cluster F like this is nice to screenshot throughout the ride to review later.

If your get ODB Fusion, go to the Dashboards section, click:

    > Menu, Add Dashboard
    > Menu, Add Display
    > Add Radial or Digital Gauges
    > Select options

Then, once the new Display is on the Dashboard, hold press the Display,

    > Edit Display appears
    > Play around with menus until you get the hang of it

IMO worth the $10. Good luck!

Untrue. Posted minimum speeds on most interstates is 40-45 mph, and only a handful of states are 45-60.

Okay, I'd do it all day long and not sweat a bead.

Are you actually saying you'll be shot for driving 50 mph on an interstate?? That's an asinine statement. Thanks for verifying my point on the veracity of my previous post...

All, adding towing experience. 7000 lb travel trailer 29 ft. Ambient 94 Rolling from VA to VT, highest pan temp on my scan gauge was 239, but only after a long pull, keeping in S4 the temp was 220 to 224, Stop and go in Troy NY with Ambient temp 100 was 233. I lock out S6 manually and agree with a previous poster that S5 is sweet spot on level, but I shift to S4 so the RPMs stay up and the trans is not "hunting a gear". NY and VT have the mountains, so the Tundra was in S3 for a number of the hills on RT11 in VT going E from RT 7N. Temp 230 or so.

Net Net, not worried about a trans cooler install given experience and temps I see. Plan to change fluid at 60K mile as per owners manual.

Tomorrow is my planned cooler installation day. Depending on how it goes, I may hitch up the trailer on Sunday and take it out for a drive just to see the difference. I'm kind of getting excited!

ST tire speed ratings should be verified. All of the speed ratings on my trailer tires are 75-81 mph (M or L) at max capacity. Can’t say I have ever owned a ST tire limited at 65 mph.

I agree with you on towing at 80 mph regardless of tow rig setup.

I tried S5 when towing my trailer last week but I couldn't get the torque converter to stay locked. When I would come to a small uphill, it would lock the converter then immediately drop to 4th, instead of letting it try to hold in 5th with the converter locked. I also couldn't accelerate ahead of hills in 5th or, if I did, it would still shift down to 4th on the hill and I'd top the hill going faster than I was at the bottom, which is always great for fuel economy. All in all, I decided I prefer S4 despite running at 3000 RPM because the truck behaves more like I'd expect it to, rather than downshifting randomly.

Just the TRD skid plate removal and installation, really. Would have been easier if I had a second person to help. The actual install of the cooler and its components was not bad, though my claustrophobia hit a few times while I was under the truck.

The things I was most concerned about, looked installing the thermostat and the hard lines, was far easier than I had expected. Good luck!

You're finding what I experienced while towing. Upshifts to S5 were useful and even a few to 6 on long downhills but as you noted, S4 seems to work best. I really can't say my MPG is any worse just staying in fourth.
Those monitoring trans temps can see a rapid temperature rise on the sensor closest to the TC as soon as the TC unlocks. Yesterday on the way back from PA I saw 212*F on both pan and TC after a few miles of 78 MPH on a hilly section of I77 north of Cambridge OH. We were light but there was a headwind and 67*F after a front passed. Yikes! A cooler may be reasonable option even without pulling a trailer.

Speed limit on many interstates in the south is 75 mph. Stupid fks with their underpowered trucks towing at 60 mph is a disaster waiting to happen as tractor trailers work to get around the idiots which backs up the left lane until a gauntlet is formed around dip shit doing 60 mph. You will eventually get slammed into from behind towing towing 10 mph under stated speeds as most go 10 mph over stated speeds. Coming back from Dallas on 45 south Friday where the speed limit is 75 mph, I saw a guy launch a bottle at an idiot towing at 65 mph. Poor broke fk needs to get the proper tow vehicle or not tow.....

Thats ridiculous. No one is slamming into you for driving 60mph, thats why there is a passing lane. If you get slammed into its that person's fault and they obviously are not paying attention. Many company vehicles are set to not go over 65 or the GPS will alert the company if it does. Driving 55-65mph will give you the best MPG in any vehicle so even owner operators will drive slower to save money especially with the high cost of diesel. If you want to drive fast thats fine, do it in the fast lane. I have absolutely no problem with someone driving slow as long as they are in the right lane. Here in mass the limit is 65 and minimum is 45. You'll rarely see me going over 65 and I stay to the right and allow people to pass, if I want to pass I move over and pass on the left like you are supposed to. The speed limit is just that, the limit, not how fast you have to drive, now if there is a posted minimum, then yes you need to stay above that.

I tend to think it was the idiot that launched the bottle not the guy towing at 65. Afterall that's the recommended towing speed for a Tundra.....Which is built in Texas by Texans.

Living in florida and traveling up north through multiple states often, I've never seen 75mph limit. It is always 65 or 70 outside metro and drops to 55 or 60 inside metro.

You need to cool your head. Nobody is getting shot or killed. If you are a hot rod and get triggered by slower traffic, perhaps it's time to take anger management seriously.

My trailer and my truck both list a max towing speed of 65 mph. I sometimes push it to 70, but I hang out in the right lane. If I'm going 65 and someone drives in to me going 75 or 85, they are to blame, not me. If someone chucks a bottle at me, I will call the police and report their license plate. They are the "fk" and not me.

On a side note, this "fk" took the trailer out today to try out the new cooler. Very impressed! I used to tow in S4 and S5 and work to keep temps less than 225. Today I drove in D and Tow Haul and maxed out at 201 degrees. If I had done that in D before, I would have easily been hitting 235. On average, I saw a reduction today of about 30 degrees!

They can be the fk, they can be the at fault driver, in the end you will be involved, and there is a 50% chance the other driver won't have insurance. Call the Police, bet they are taking the details on another catalytic converter be stolen lol. Massachusetts what a joke state, prevented their citizens from buying Apple back in the 80's. I wonder how that worked out for them. Nanny state. If you are going to tow and your vehicle cannot maintain speed then get a F250 or larger. You are the hazard with your slow moving tow vehicle. Make sure to check your trans temp but how, you would have to take your eyes off the road, that isn't safe either.

Yes Massachusetts is a joke of a state, no disagreement there. I drive all over New England though and the highest speed limit is 70mph in NH. I'm not even towing when I'm driving the speed limit. I'm not knocking anyone who drives over the speed limit either. Theres a reason a highway has multiple lanes. You want to burn more gas, wear out your tires, transmission ect faster as well, the passing lane is there for you, use it. If someone wants to drive the speed limit in the right lane and save gas, drive safer, and not get a speeding ticket theres nothing wrong with that. If you notice absolutely no one agrees with you on this, all your posts have 0 likes and every post disagreeing with you has multiple likes. When I was young and dumb I drove like a idiot as well, then when you get older and sit back and chill in the slow lane and watch all the stupidity happening going past you, especially when you see them fly by and then come up on them and they're off the road a couple miles up or pulled over getting a ticket. You realize that the couple extra minutes you're trying to save really is not worth it. I feel much more relaxed when I arrive at a destination after I drove there in no rush. We're driving pick up trucks, not sports cars or motorcycles. The Tundra is about the least nimble thing I've driven next to an actual box truck, add a trailer behind it and you're just asking for trouble flying down a highway over the speed limit, considering these things don't stop on a dime even when unloaded.

Glad to see someone else in OH was seeing those temps while towing. I was talking to people at the campground who traveled west and we were all discussing the lack of downhill or level highway, and how the headwind was not noticeable except for MPG and engine load displays. Highest I saw, with trans cooler, was 217. A drop to 4th for a few miles and the temps started retreating back to the 207-211 range. I didn't reach 217 in the mountains of PA, so I was a bit concerned.

Got our first fully loaded towing trip post-install of the cooler.

As a recap, previously I'd tow mainly in S4 with some S5, and typically run about 217-222 degrees, with short blips to 230 on more significant hills. I avoided towing in D because it would get too hot, too fast.

This trip, after the cooler installation, was about 70 miles each way. On the way there, ambient temps were about 85 degrees F and I left the transmission in D for the entire drive. Temps hung out around 202 deg with one blip up to 210 degrees, which quickly came back down once I crested the hill.

The return trip was cooler - about 75 degrees out, but I doubt that made much of a difference. This time I drove in S5 and saw similar temps. A bit more up-hill on the way home than the way to the campground. Hung out again in the low 200s, and peaked for a short time at 213.

So overall, I'm averaging about 20 degrees cooler and no longer needing to use S4 to control temps. Now I can just put the transmission selector in whatever selection I need to deal with hills, and not really monitor temps so closely. I'm happy with the results.

Great news. Did you notice and difference in the fuel consumption or does she still drink like Winston Churchill.

Not conclusively so. I say that because I feel like I get something different every time I tow. I got about 10 mpg on the way there and about 9 on the way back. My best ever while towing was about 11 mpg (tail wind, no doubt) and my worst is about 8 or 8.5 mpg. So I'd say my mileage on this trip was typical and not outside of my norms.

I can't say that I've really done enough towing in D to come to a conclusion. The instantaneous and average figures from the scan gauge were as usual. One thing I can say is the stock '21 sure heats the fluid when towing in drive.
