275/65/20 or 275/60/20 on 3rd Gen

I went with the metric cooper, I was between the 275/60 and the 65. Have read plenty of posts and seen videos where people were claiming 17-18mpg on hwy with these and around 14-15 in city driving. Was curious if anyone on here was seeing that. Mine isn’t broken in, only 120 miles on it and the lie-o-meter is showing about 14 with all city driving. I haven’t accounted for the % difference in tire size at that number.

 

Hi. I am also looking into the Nitto Recon Grappler in 275/65/20 on the stock wheels with no lift or spacers. Has anyone come across any issues with these tires? Noise, rubbing, poor wet traction, etc? I do not seen many reviews or comments on there tires since they are pretty new.

 

After reading through this thread, I think I am going to put on the nitto recon grapplers in a 275/65/20 size.

I would like to put on the 275/65R20 116T. Nitto list it as a suv/light truck tire. It weighs 47.5 pounds.
I am concerned that might be a mistake. They also list LT275/65R20 E 126/123S as an suv/light truck tire, but it weighs 58.60 pounds. I prefer keep the tires as light as possible, but I am concerned I might not be getting the right thing.

Can anyone clear it up for me?

Best bet is to find the weight rating for the tires you want, and make sure they can handle equal to or more than your OEM tires...

There are a few websites where you can plug in both and it'll compare them, but can't remember off the top of my head...

 

Here is my setup on a 2022 short bed Gen 3 platinum w1.75 in front level / Nitto Recon Grappler A/T - 295/60R20 on stock wheels. When these wear out, 37" coming...

 

You'll have no issue whatsoever with this size and tire combo. My discount tire says I can go up to a 285 comfortably with no issue. When they were putting the tires on they let me come out and see it at full lock to make sure there was proper clearance before I made the purchase, which was really nice of them. I'm running Nitto ridges in this size and have had 0 problems. Also not sure if you park in a garage but expect an extra 2 inches of lift from the tires so keep that in mind if you have clearance concerns. Expect to take an MPG hit.

 

My computer reads around 16mpg after running around 50/50 city and 70-80mph highway. With the 275/65r20 tires being 5% larger, the real world mpg would be closer to 17

Cruising at 60 on the freeway on flat ground I definitely still get over 20mpg. I specifically did not get E load tires to help keep ride and mpgs as close to stock as possible though.

The 116T will have a thinner sidewall and therefor support less weight than the E rated 126/123s tire. Most tires of this size are meant for larger trucks that are rated to carry heavier loads, so they need thicker tires in order to do so. Our trucks being 1/2 tons don't need the additional load capacity so you can run either one. The thicker tire will be heavier which means more energy to spin (less mpg) and stiffer so they tend to have a more firm ride.

Personally, I stuck with the thinner tire and am super happy I did. I actually bought this size specifically because it was the largest size I could find in stock without stepping up to an E

 

I'm in about the same boat... I wanted 35x12.50r18 and went with the D rated Toyo AT3 over the F rated... No need for that HD of a tire...

 

I am deciding between the Toyo A/T IIIs in 35/11.5/R20 after putting in the front leveling kit, or not doing any leveling kit and getting some 285/60/R20 tires (assuming they'd fit) on my stock Platinum wheels? How much "lift" would I get by just upgrading to those tires without any leveling kit?

 

Since the stock tires are 32.5 you are increasing the overall diameter by 2.5" if you go to a 35. That means you are lifting the truck by half of that (1.25")

285/60r20 is 33.5" so you'd gain 0.5" in height over stock

 

Oh duh, that makes sense. Okay, so 35" will be a nice 1.25" lift then, in addition to my 1.75" lift in the front, I think I'll like that.

No, and it is a bit of a long story. The dealer did not want to do the 275/65/r20, and they explained to me that there would be zero warranty issues if I went with what they could get approved for toyota specs. I went back and forth for days, and everntually it made sense to me not to take a chance in compromising any part of the warranty.

I went with Bridgestone Revo A/T3 that was a P275/60/R20 and a 1.75 inch front level. It weighed only 4 pounds more (41 pounds) than what came on from the factory, and it is 4/10 of an inch bigger in diameter. Here is the only pic i have right now. The tires are being reversed so its all black on the outside. One day i might go a size larger, but for right now this should take care of everything I will do with it.

 

They were okay with the level but not 275/65R20 tires? Seems odd...

 

running non metric version... 35x11.5R20 Recon Grapplers on the factory TRD wheels, with mudflaps... zero rubbing issues, very quiet, no traction concerns that I have noticed... =) Overall I would do it again, and have zero regrets... I found the "non metric" versions to be cheaper at the time as well...

 

Any reason you chose these tires? I am considering them and the Toyo A/T IIIs

 

Honestly, I was looking at the Coopers, Toyo, and Nitto's... It really came down to price, and "look"... I found the Nitto's for under $400/ tire + install.. couldn't get close to that on the others... not sure if I caught a sale at discount tire, but they were ~$1630 out the door (end of April)

 

Yeah that makes sense. Looks like I can get the Nitto Recons for $1747, or Toyos for $1760 so it's negligible

 

$400+ a tire?! Dang

I'm a little peeved that my tires dropped $40 each after I bought them..... I paid $320ea and they're down to $280ea on Amazon. Good news for anyone looking for some great ATs though!

How are those? The only knock I have I guess is the size isn't as big as what I was hoping for. But maybe with the front leveling kit and these, the "lift" would be enough?

I love them! Really fill out the wheel wells without sacrificing ride quality or much MPG

 

one thing to note to everyone running these tires such as a 35x11.50 or 295/65/20 or equivalents is the stock wheels are 20x8 on platinum, limited , 1794 but the black TRD 6 spoke wheels are 8.5"

Quick question, did you get the 126h or the 116h? The 116h is about $394 on Amazon.

 

Do you have any updated side view photos of your truck? I'm scheduled to get 275/60/20 with a 2" level. Similarly, the dealer told me anything bigger would not fit (which is obviously not true) but also a little worried the 2" level might be too much esp with smaller tires than I'd planned.

275/60/20 will look way to small with any sort of lift or level. I have 295/60/20 on stock suspension

 

thanks for the feedback, sort of what I figured. They ordered the tires already but I’ll probably let them know it was based on their bad advice and see if they’ll let me switch to something bigger.

If you have a chance can you post a pic of yours? I’ve seen the black one on here similarly configured.

 

I do have pictures, and i would not do anything different. I personally don't think they look too small. If my math is correct, the 295/60 is 12 millimeters taller than the 275/60.

There is an independent shop that does all the leveling for 2 local toyota dealers. They put a 1.75 on the front of almost 30 tundras a month, and they recommended not doing anything other than that. I went with it, and I have no regrets. I think a 2 would have been too much, but I think what would have really happened is they would have done 3 in the front and 1 in the back.

I average 18mpg with a little bit of hwy driving. 80 percent is in the city.
