Window Trim Peeling

Several of our Tundras at work have the trim peeling around the window revealing Chrome beneath. Is this something that is replaceable? Paintable? Whats the normal course of action y'all take?

 

i paid around $400 and something for all 4 weatherstrips on my double cab...

 

Super easy to just replace. Holler at Roman or Sparks Toyota or something

 

I’d tape it off and sand/prep it and then spray some big box Rustoleum bed liner with a follow up finish coat of Rustoleum Industrial Black.

You could probably do your entire fleet for under $20.

 

That is what I was thinking. I don't think its the weather stripping of the window, its just the trim. I just find it weird that its Chrome underneath of all things, ya know?

 

I replaced all four on my wife’s XB. They come off super easy. Just roll the window down and start popping it up. I don’t think the tundra would be much different. I like your idea with the liner and then industrial black. I would’ve done that except for the flexible part against the window was all rotted out.

 

Some have removed, sanded and painted. I'm considering doing mine with Rustoleum bed liner.

 

Same issue on mine. But no way I am going to pay that much for just some trim pieces. I may try the sand and paint though once I get everything else taken care of.

 

My buddy wrapped his with carbon fiber looking vinyl. I never tried to take them off but if it's as easy as everyone says then sand & paint sounds like a good solution

 

They are really difficult to sand. The paint is a thick rubbery coating, that when it gets old, becomes hard and brittle, and starts to peel off. To remove the remaining pieces is more difficult than just regular sanding down paint. But, it still is a lot cheaper than buying new ones.
On my Tacoma I sanded it and sprayed with plastidip. It lasted at least 5 years after that. The bedliner type paint is obviously better than plastidip, so that's a feasible option. Just don't expect the sanding part to be easy.

 

Looking for the part number for the window trim at the bottom of the rear window for a 2005 DC, which is peeling badly. Can't find it anywhere!

I recently replaced them on my front doors. I was able to do it in the driveway with the pliers on my multi tool. Just kind of gently pry the old one out, align the clips with the holes (as the clips can slide) and snap it in.
It took about 5 minutes. They were about $50 each.

 

Ive replaced them completely before and they were like $50 like oldschool said. More recently on the rear window trim on my 05 DC and also rear pillar pieces on wifes sequoia I plastidipped them and it looks great and its proably been a year or so. If you get close on the DC trim piece you can see where I couldnt peel all the old stuff off but I think it looks fine.

 

Just replaced the belt molding on the rear window of my 05 DC this morning. I opened the window and used the flat end of a painter's tool/putty knife to pry the old clips up. The new molding snapped right into place.

Now that the back looks so good, I'm going to end up spending $$$ on the rest of the windows!!

That seems like a pretty good deal actually!! The front window pieces which are probably less than half that length were around $50.

 

Where did you get yours for $50?

I'd like to do the other 4 doors and the drip moulding on the roof, but I'm finding them for close to $100 each or the $400 set TVU682 was probably talking about above.

 

Would someone be able to post video of how these come off and are replaced? I'm new to this and not as handy as many of you here. Thanks.

 

Probably ebay, it was 10 years ago when I had an access cab. A quick ebay search still has the access cab belt mouldings for about $50 but the double cab mouldings are $425!!!

Restarting an old thread here…

Does anyone know if the clips that connect these to the door can be replaced if I break them when removing the moldings?

my belt moldings are bad enough that I’ll be able to just peel off all the coating, so I’m going to attempt to remove them and spray with bed liner. Wondering if I will need to replace the whole piece if I break any clips. That would be an expensive mistake if the clips aren’t a separate part

 

If anyone can find that part # it's @shifty`

I suspect they may not be sold separately because when I ordered new trim it came with new clips. I could be wrong though. Toyota is random AF with deciding which parts to discontinue.

You know, in looking at the explodeds for my access cab truck, I'm realizing Toyota still sells the window channel seals and such.

It's always driven me nuts that the front windows rattle when rolled down anywhere from just-cracked to about halfway, and this seems to be a problem on all of our trucks.

I'm curious if one of the three colored seals here may be the culprit. I suspect they get flattened over time. I think it's probably a problem of either the red or the green. Probably the longer red piece. But I really have no idea and it's about $100/ea no matter which of the 4 you pick.

 

I have the same issue. I thought it might be the lower belt molding, but on the inside. The part below that's listed as part# 68172A. I went ahead and order some for both doors along with my steering rack and everything else. I'll report back if they help at all. But my order still hasn't shipped, so might take a bit to confirm.

 

I see the AC has that part also. If I'm remembering correctly from having my door off, that's the inner window squeegee at the top of the door, and it's stapled in.

don't quote me on the staples, I might be thinking of my last truck.

Whatever it is, something that's supposed to be applying pressure to the window when it's UP in the door isn't, and that's allowing it to flex inward/outward, causing the rattle. It could literally be any of the rubber seals that's just lost its "push" into the window over the years.

My rear slider window is doing similar, but they don't sell replacement seals for that. I really wish they did, I'd love to refresh the track.

 

I remember with my old T4R there were little metal "tabs" that actually went through holes in the inner belt molding (or whatever it's called) and you placed it on bent the tabs over to hold it in place. Someone on the 4runner form took theirs off and added extra felt and that fixed the issue for them, so that's my rationale for replacing them. I think once the window starts to roll down it's mainly the bottom molding that keeps it tight and the channels just keep it guided. I could be wrong.
