Official intake suggestion thread

I can still pull my trailer without feeling any loss at the bottom end. I feel like a winner at the end of the day and I get the mean V8 growl Mid RPM range.

 

I only question why these companies don’t show their power graph below the midrange...even if their stuff didn’t lose power, it would be nice to see thaf

 

IMO it's because it's hard without a true manual or tip mode. Anything lower in RPM, it will downshift. So you need to find that sweet spot and get the throttle application down right.

With the OVTune, having a true gear lock, you'd be able to get a true representation of the full curve.

 

Have you guys seen this?...Any thoughts?

I like that it comes with a shroud to bring air in directly from the front grille.

That’s the Stillen. It’s relatively new, so not many have it yet, but so far everyone here (me included) loves theirs.

Aside from my TRD Pro Grille, it’s my favorite mod so far and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

 

Glad to see another positive review. Been waiting on mine for almost a month now haha. About to call stillen in a few to get an update.

 

Oh boy!!....I am very familiar with that situation.

On my other vehicle's forum (Stinger Forum) they also announced that an intake was in the process of being made for that car. Long story short, it took them 3 more months from the original release date to start shipping those that had been pre-ordered. Every time a member would ask for an update on the forum or via email they were told "2 more weeks" Keep in mind this was all back in 2018, so waaayy before Covid.

To top things off the intakes had an issue where they didn't leave enough tube for the filter to grab on to, so those who had received the intake and installed them had their filters fall off.

I understand that the situation is on a completely different platform, but the bitterness is still there whenever I hear those type of problems with that manufacturer.

How is the new intake?

 

Love it. Noticeable improvement in get up and go. Passing gear on the interstate is definitely smoother with more pull. Intake temps are also much more stabile. Im happy with it.

About how wide is the intake tube to the throttle body?

 

No less than the OD of the throttle body, which is about 4”. Its about 8” in diameter at the intake inlet.

 

That Stillen looks like they took the SABM idea and just moved it to the front of the engine bay. My 55K AMGs have a similar setup from the factory, two plastic horns from the front of the engine bay into the filter housings. Makes sense to capture cooler air before it enters the engine bay. I think the Stillen may be the answer for those of us with new trucks still under warranty that don't want to cut a hole in the fender wall. Seems easy enough to remove and reinstall the factory airbox for the occasional trip to the dealer. Its now in my cart...

Not 100% sure, but believe the stock airbox is more of a CAI than that. At least the stock box has an inlet from the fender well

 

@Yota82 that rough country intake will be a downgrade from your stock. You want something that pulls air from at least the fender well (which your stock does) and is enclosed (which you stock is). That RC intake will just be pulling hot air from the engine bay which won't benefit you. Many other options out there and this thread has lots of reviews and feedback. I'd suggest choosing one of them instead.

How different are the gen 2 and gen 3 5.7s? I like the Stillen intake, but it's only offered for a gen 3. Wonder if it would fit?

 

Because of how dynos work and too many variables. Once you get into the power band is where you see consistencies as well as frankly top end numbers make money.
But yeah it’s much harder to quantify and verify lower end numbers where it actually shows a graph the average person is going to understand.

 

Stillen owner on my new '21 Tundra. Very pleased with the intake. I live in hot-ass Houston, and I like to think the Stillen pulling air from the wheel well and front of the grill (and not the engine bay) + the throttle body coolant bypass help keep things cool-ish.

I've got 35" all terrains on a 3.5" Rough Country suspension lift. I get about 14 mpg in the city and 16 on the highway, the truck pulls "great" off the line (better than when it was stock) and I run 93 octane in it.

I've run all of my engine mods and 93 octane in the vehicle since practically when I bought it new.

 

The stillen has a ram air snorkel that goes through the grill. You have to remove a piece of rubber and replace it with a plastic panel that acts like a funnel to the ram air. I may be wrong but the 2nd gen grills don't reach that far to the side.

 

You won't gain anything with an aftermarket intake.

 

I had the RC hot air intake, it made my Tundra sound mean but didnt see anything performance wise. But that thing really made my V8 sound awsome, but sold it and got the Stillen. Kept the RC pre filter bag tho and put it on my Stillen in case water gets in the intake.

 

anyone know a non oil filter that will fit the TRD Pro box?

 

Recently traded my 4Runner for a 5.7L 19’ Tundra TRD Pro. Had a K&N on the 4Runner, which sounded awesome and definitely improved performance. But I’ve seen that S&B, Stillen, K&N, & TRD offer Intake options for the Tundra. Any recommendations?
