Which running boards to go with?--Pictures requested

Curious to ask what steps I should go with?--Pros/Cons--Post pics

TRD running boards
or the Predator running boards

Also, will I need any hardware with each?

 

I'm trying to decide the same thing right now. Predator steps are out of stock. Not sure if I should wait for them or choose a different option.

I plan on getting the GhRhino RB20s

 

Predators are garbage- not enough surface area and slippery and will bust your shins. They pack full of mud and snow/ ice and if you off-road they catch on everything and will rip off.

I have the factory TRD boards and actually like them a lot. They don’t stick out too far, they have enough usable space and are pretty tucked in, and look great and factory. I’ll swap them out when amp releases a kit for our trucks

Only thing about the TRD running boards is the brackets that show as well as cost

 

Got the same on my 2016. Nice and sturdy, no complaints.

 

Holy cow. I just looked these up for my Lexus GX since I folded the factory step on a rock the other day. They cost almost as much as legit frame mounted rock sliders.

 

You can have less heavy duty “sliders” made if there’s a welder near you. I plan to make some light duty ones for my long bed.

 

This is my first truck and first time buying running boards. Are there cheaper alternatives you would suggest that still look nice, don't have a huge gap and are durable? I was going to get them in the bedliner finish from RealTruck through Santana, so the pricing is better than what you saw on GoRhino's website.

 

I picked up the Predator steps at a semi-local dealer for right around $400 and have had no issues so far. They get some hate but they work well for us at least. Time will tell how they hold up I suppose.

I agree that the TRD boards look sick, but I couldn't justify the price at the time...

 

I'd recommend a proper set of rock sliders.

Standard tube style are fine. Relatively inexpensive at $400. Solid amount of stepping platform. Definitely easier getting in. Waiting on Amp Research or Rough Country automatic steps, but ill probably be waiting till end of year if not next.

You won't need additional hardware. Look underneath your truck and there should already be pre-installed bolts for your steps. 8 on each side.

 

I vote for sliders too.

 

These are the rb10 slim boards.

 

the tube steps are fine but in my situation in ND winters, they are too slippery for winter use imo. the rubber step section gets hard in the winter and gets slippery.

we have the classic running boards on our 2018 and since they are plastic, they tend to get pretty slick during winter if they get a light coat of snow/ice on them.

on our 2022 reserve request we are asking for the trd boards since they come coated with anti slip already.

 

Question for you all: what are your opinions on aluminum vs. the regular running board Toyota offers? We live on the coast and launch our boat in and out of salt water. I'm thinking Aluminum would last longer in the salt environment, but I'm not sure it's worth the $$. They are almost twice as much. Any thought?

 

I saw a couple people mention sliders here. I've been looking for a set for a crew max / 6.5 bed and can't seem to find any. Anybody know if these are available yet?

 

So, at the risk of sounding uninformed, what is the difference between sliders and running boards?

 

Sliders sit high and tight to the side skirting, and legit ones usually bolt directly to the frame (I believe) and designed to protect the sides of vehicle from impacts on the trail...

Most running boards have drop brackets to lower the steps and offset them for easier use as an actual step... Not usually recommended for legit trailing, as it lowers the clearance significantly... And on our trucks at least, they appear to bolt to the body, not the frame...

 

Aluminum unless you wash your truck often. They ought to be lighter too, but I could be wrong.

 

Would be interested too. But even for the previous model it seems to be hard to get. Probably because the long wheelbase is not that great for off-roading…

I figured as much but would guess there is enough market for at least a couple companies to offer them.

They look nice but unless you have a tiny foot, not very realistic.

 

I'm typically not a fan of white paint and definitely not Washington plates (sorry, couldn't resist), but damm your truck looks great.
