Thoughts on ToyotaCarePlus Maintenance and Toyota Extra Care

Got my new Platinum CrewMax and am debating getting either or both of those plans. I bought this truck and plan to keep it anywhere from 6-10 years. I am wondering what people's general consensus on here is about these extended warranties and maintenance plans. I got hooked up with a rep who is giving them at cost (won't post it here) so they're relatively cheap overall.

• Since it already has ToyotaCare for 2yr/25k, would getting the 3yr/35k be worth it for just an additional year? It's really cheap, or the 5yr/55k is about 80% more. 4yr/60k is more than both, and not sure if it's worth it.
• Debating between 6yr/75k, 7yr/75k, 8yr/100k, 10yr/100k extended warranties. I don't put a ton of miles on my car (though I'm moving to Idaho and might drive a lot more once I'm there).

Since this is my first Toyota and first expensive car I've ever purchased, I am not 100% sure on my thoughts on this. I like the idea of just bringing my car in every 5k miles for routine maintenance and not having to pay anything. Knowing I'd have the maintenance plan + warranty to cover any unexpected issues, this seems to be really nice.

 

I mean, if you say its cheap to buy (easy to compare to paying for own maintenance), I would go with extended toyota care. Extended warranty, would go with longest length, if going to pay for 6 years, might as well spend a lil more for 2 more years. GL

 

With today's inflation I took at prepaid maintenance as sort of inflation proofing my cost. You are buying future work at today's prices. I have never seen dealer maintenance ever go down.

As far as extended warranty. That is a personal call. I normally tend to keep my truck over 5 years so I treat it as insurance. Just make sure you project your mileage. Hate to expire on mileage vs years. If you predict right, you should be close to both miles and years about the same time.

Oh and don't over pay. I sent you the prices I was quoted when I purchased.

I’ve never bought an extended warranty on a Toyota, as it’s been in my experience useless and unnecessary. In over ten years of driving Tundras/Sequoias I’ve never had anything break on one.

That said, I’m assuming you got a 2022 Tundra. Considering it’s a brand new untested model, I’d almost definitely get an extended warranty on it. There’s been a few bugs discovered already, and there’s a good chance there will be others along the way.

 

Get the Platinum Toyota Extra Care, the extended maintenance if you go get make sure that's platinum as well otherwise all you get is a couple rotations and oil changed every 10k under that plan. I am an advisor at a Toyota dealership and believe me things are getting pricey these days and lots of people are happy that they have the extended warranty.

 

Planning to get an extended warranty, but not sure on the maintenance plan... Have had bad luck in the past with 2 of the local dealers leaving filters barely screwed on and applying 200ft/lb torque to drain plugs, and never actually rotating the tires... If those plans only cover those two things, I'd rather just change the oil myself and figure out the rotations...

 

Yes, I'd go with the 10 year warranty. I did the 10/100k myself with all the gadgets on these things and being a new model. I already have Toyoguard Platinum included, so opted not to do the extended service contract.

 

I've had Tundras since Jan 2000...(sold with over 150,000 miles) and main issues... normal maintenance, tires/shocks/brakes/wipers/battery(11 yrs on most recent Tundra! Incredible! - most are 5-6) - I've replaced oxygen sensors on the 2000 and brakes were an issue - but that was a design issue fixed in '03 model. also, I had to replace the rubber firewall gasket around the steering column after 6 yrs on that tundra. That's it. Regular recommended fluid changes. (oh yeah, on my 2011 Tundra(still running at 126,000 miles), I had to replace the 11 yr old radiator, it had started to seep along the top seam. I replaced the idler pulley and water pump while they were in there, and the serpentine belt)

But... to me, that's a pretty damn good track record over 22 years!

 

what can I expect to pay for this Platinum Toyota Extra Care? I know it depends on the dealer, but I'm trying to get some expectations in check.

It is one of those things that either it is well worth it if you need to replace something, and if you don't use it, it is usually transferable to another toyota if you get something later. I used to never do the extended warranties but after having my first tundra need the entire AC system replaced at about 6-7000 dollars the warranty paid for itself and then some. I had almost 80 thousand miles on the truck and the AC compressor shelled out contaminating the entire system. Dealer replaced everything, no out of pocket for me, and I traded the truck in right after and the majority of the warranty transferred over to my new truck. I f you end up not using it then may question if afterwards but it is a piece of mind having it.

Are you able to sign up for extended anytime at any dealer even if it’s the the state where truck was purchased?

 

You can purchase a Toyota warranty in any Lower 48 state and use it at any Toyota dealership in all lower 48 states.

 

My dealer sold me an extended warranty which I had thought to be through Toyota, but it seems it's through Total Care Auto. Anyone have insight or experience with these guys? Is it just as good as toyota care?

Does anybody have good contacts for a maintenance plan? I was offered 75k miles service plan for $1280, which I didn’t take since I hadn’t done any research. Not sure if that was a good deal or not.

You pay either way.

Don't ask the sales guy, call another dealer service dept and ask how much an:
* oil change is
* a tire rotation is

Computer the cost of the oil change + 2 tire rotations. Because that's all you need for the 3rd year. (e.g. you're buying 1 year of this, but they're advertising it as 3)

If the price of the ToyotaCare is less than ala carte, then buy it. I suspect they're taking you for a ride though.

Another other reason not to pre-pay is what happens in case of an accident or loss. You pre-pay for that vehicle and just paid them for a service you will never receive. That's yet another way they win. Finally, you're at the mercy of the service contract as to what they'll actually do. Those generally have a nice glossy page on front of what they might do followed by 5 pages of exclusions in fine print. If you pay as you go, you get exactly what your truck needs, not what some contract says.

Personally, I never pre-pay for those services. Generally, they overcharge and are designed to be a profit center for the dealership. They wouldn't offer these if the house didn't win. Casinos and car dealerships were not built on winners. The highest grossing employee at any car dealership is the "finance manager" that "does the paperwork". Just politely decline everything, they'll use all sorts of scare tactics to get you to buy and it works.

If you decide you want to throw money at the warranty shredder, the people on this forum generally sell a Toyota factory (not 3rd party look-alike) one at much cheaper than your finance guy will offer.

 

2 hours, holy moses. If we weren't signing documents after 5 minutes, I'm walking out the door. That's not a finance manager, that's a hostage situation.

I listen to their sales pitch and if they're pushy I just tell them, "I am not a lawyer and I don't have time to read and comprehend all of the exclusions to make an informed decision. I can take this to my attorney and have him review this and get back to you in a couple of weeks if the terms of this contract are acceptable to me". They either back down or double down on the stupid.

Just take control of your finances and self fund your repairs. If it's got problems as the factroy warranty nears end, it's a toyota, just trade it in for another. They hold great value.

 

the only question is how much the cost of oil changes and rotation will be in x years down the road. you can pay pricing for todays cost and if they rise any significant cost, you actually save money in the long run.

i remember the cost of the tundra oil change used to be about $65 but this year the cost is around $95 for that same oil change and filter.

and for those wondering, i dont do my own. i just drop it off and do other things since i have better stuff to do at my age.

 

The question that should be asked is, how much are they charging you for an oil change with the service contract? The answer is well above the going rate. I was offered 3yr (really 1 year) for $350. Nope.

 

I trust dealer lube techs as much as a politician. No way in hell am I paying for them to screw up my truck. I use to do the “free” oil changes and tire rotations on my lease. It was a lease so I didn’t care, but I had to change out a tire once and the tire was so over torqued. You think those tech take their time to use a torque wrench on your wheels? They are a sweat shop, bring it in, get it out. No thanks.

I got into finance and they had a list of 5-6 warranties and services pulled up on the iPad on the desk... Before he started, I was like "I'm going to be honest with you, I'm only interested in an extended warranty, and only if you can match this quote from another dealer"... He took immediately closed the boxes for everything but the warranty and didn't even try to sell them. Got to the warranty and said if he matched he wouldn't make any money on it (>$5), and his boss likes to make money. I asked if his boss would be more upset with no sale at all, or a sale with little to no profit. We compromised at match + $45 (worth the hassle to me) and I was in and out of that office in 15 min. Took them longer to fill up the gas and clean the truck than it did for the paperwork. Hands down best dealership experience I've had to date...

Are you a DIY guy and do you enjoy working on cars? If the answer is even remotely yes, I would say dont do it on the maintanance plan. The chances are high that they will do something incorrectly or not to your liking, all that basic maintenance stuff is done by minimum wage guys with almost 0 experience. Plus, everytime you go in there there will likely be a wait and they will try to upsell you on something.

The warranty might be a good idea being that its a new model and covid times, but if you are going to keep it less than 10 years, I probably wouldnt worry about it since you get a 5 or 6 year powertrain anyway and if there is a major issue with the truck they usually will extend the warranty period for that specific issue. Just my .02.

 

personally the ext warranty is for the high ticket electronics and stuff not related to the powertrain for me.

led headlights, digital dash, center console, rear window, pano roof, complete TSS systems, etc.
