SR5 tailgate black trim removal?

Hi everyone, I'm about to order a new Tundra, will be my 5th over the past 20 years. I'm leaning toward the SR5 but I don't care for the black strip across the upper portion of the tailgate. Does anyone know if that's easily removable?

 

If your getting the sr5 with trd off road package it will be white not black

 

The spoiler is integrated into the design of the tailgate. It houses the back up camera and the tailgate handle. Can’t remove but it can be painted to match or wrapped.

 

Not too bad to remove. Toyota calls it the rear spoiler.

It’s held on by few torx bolts and clips. Got to remove the handle and camera too.

 

Is the rear spoiler color keyed on the SR5 with all of the TRD OFF ROAD packages, or just certain TRD OFF ROAD packages??

 

Checking on this again. Is removing the black trim on the SR5 possible? If not how much would a wrap or paint cost to match it?

Wrap costs may vary but I actually like the dark panel so I had mine wrapped for $100 to look more like the pic you have here

 

All TRD packages (both Sport and Off-Road) have color matched rear spoilers. The non-TRD are the only SR5's that have the non-color matched rear spoiler as far as I know.

 

Has anyone seen photos or a video of the black trim removed? Wondering if it shows any holes if taken off like TakiEvo shows.

 

I would love a video if anyone does. Mine expands in heat and has paint scrapped on top left and right as well as below the handle. Would love to remove and put some ppf under until they come out with a fix and can get dealership to repaint under warranty

 

Where can I find these instructions I have searched but can’t find any service manuals or anything online for 2022+ tundras and no videos on rear spoiler swap to trd pro model, I have the OEM spoiler and OEM led marker lights ready to install this week during Christmas vacation but not finding much on it like the grill and fender flares online? Changed the rest on my platinum only this is left.

 

Heard that they are developing one of those bumpershellz for the tailgate spoiler. That's what I'm waiting for.

 

It was easier than I thought but you have to remove the handle and camera and light as the bolt into the spoiler.
Also good idea to get few extra clips I had 4 break all of them came out with the factory spoiler.

ran the rave off road wire harness kit I got down through tailgate on factory harness. Works great but make sure replacement has weather stripping on it.

now need to get new handle less piano black lol.

 

Has anyone completed the removal on an SR5? Are there any holes in the tailgate after removal? Is the tailgate color matched under the spoiler? I assume it would be. Looking to remove the spoiler on my SR5

 

I removed the spoiler and the bumper inserts and color matched them with a kit from touch up direct. Looks soo much better than the black work truck look. Take your time and help to unhook the factory clips and didn’t break any but they are a pain. We shall see how well the paint holds up over time but so far looks good

 

Wow, that looks great! Were you able to get it done with an aerosol can of paint? I am thinking of getting that and a clear coat can to do the job. I suppose you could also use an air gun and can of paint, but hopefully you can get away with 1 or 2 spray can.

 

Yeah just go to touchupdirect.com Kit came with primer can, color, and clear coat. Roughly $75 for the kit I think but just enough to paint all 3 pieces.

 

Did you prep the tailgate spoiler at all??? Was curious if you sanded the plastic smooth or not.

 

No just primer and got after it, there were too many cracks around the handle area. Don't notice the rough plastic at all.
