So to make a long story short I'm in the process to redo my rear drum brake. I ordered everything directly from toyota to rebuild the rear drums including the parking brake cables. Now the issue is I was going to rebuild everything without changing the backing plates because I don't have a press and didn't want to deal with removing the axles.

The issue I was going to start the project today and noticed that 1 of the backing plates has a hole and not sure what to do.

I have spent approximately $1000 on parts now I'm thinking if I have to replace the backing plates should I just try and sell the Toyota parts and do a disk conversion kit for around $1200?

    https://www.silverminemotors.com/to...e-upgrade-swap-kit-backing-plate-with-e-brake

Any suggestions are appreciated as I'm kind of screwed snice I definitely did a rookie mistake and didn't evaluate the situation first.

Take the inside brake parts off, use metal epoxy to cover the hole
, reassemble and call it good?

Was thinking in that option also but wasn't sure if the backing plates wear down after the years of the shoes rubbing on them.

I'd probably try either of these. I don't know that I'd spend 1000 bucks on a 18 year old truck for that little hole. The upgrade sounds nice though if you have the $$$ to make it happen.

I have already spent $1000 on oem parts for the rear. I don't have the cash but I also like taking care of my truck. Just finished rebuilding the front end and have the 14wa conversion ready to go in. Dealing with the rear now, my question is try to sell the oem parts I have already and get the disk conversion or replace or fix the backing plates.

This is mainly your tow rig for your track car right? I would see this as a great opportunity to upgrade to discs. I highly doubt you’ll regret it. Does anyone wanna bust a hole in my trucks backing plates?! :anonymous:

Yes for now it's my tow rig and winter truck, I'm looking in getting a chevy express or savana to make a camper/tow rig.

Then I would fix the hole with SteelStik and put the disc money towards the van. If you sell the truck, you most likely won’t recoup your money on the disc conversion.

If you are never going to sell it….I would convert it. You will be much happier after!

I had a first gen Sequoia which I still miss. Dumped a bunch of money into it even when it was older and had 230k miles on it. Definitely didn’t regret the upgrades when I was driving it.

The issue with going rear disk is that I have to see if I can sell the oem rear bake components I bought. If not I'm going to have to stick with drums.

If everything from your truck lines up with my truck (crackie) I might be interested in buying the stuff. Send me some part numbers so I can double confirm and then do price analysis. Cross reference, etc.

Does someone sell an already machined GX460 calipers? I'm interested in the upgrade but I don't have the means to machine the tabs.

Yes do you have Facebook? You can order calipers and ship them to Jim Smola and he will machine them and ship the calipers back to him.

I had mine done at a local machine shop. I had to visit 4 before I found one that could/would do it. They charged me $100 I think.

If I cant link up with Jim, how much does the caliper tabs need to be trimmed?

There is a spec somewhere but to be honest I would only trust the work to someone that had done it. It is a tight tolerance between the rotor and the inside of the caliper. If it gets trimmed to much or not enough it will hit the caliper.

I just did the rears today as I wait on the Lexus calipers. I've read a shit ton, but for 1st gen, seems like DC is the safest bet for the Lexus upgrade. Obviously, I can't say how it's gone for me yet, but mine are machined and in route.

These brakes are not that old, but I burnt them pretty good by hanging my p-brake unintentionally and driving a few hundred miles. Shoes are about dust on the thins and drums are worn with a concave.
