Is it OK to drive with the rear bed window down on the crewmax ?

Edit: I am asking because I was unsure if it would be unsupported in the down position and subject to rattle or break. I thought I read somewhere that the manual says you aren't supposed to travel with it down. That might have been due to debris and crap flying in the cab?

It is as far as I'm concerned. Do it all the time. It's the best part of owning a CrewMax!

Why not? I do it all the time if I want increased air flow. Only issue is you'll get a lot of turbulence in the cab depending on your travel speed and what other windows are open.

At lower speeds I drop all the windows including opening the sun roof. At higher speeds I usually button everything up and crack open the sun roof and crack open the rear bed window.

So long as the bed is clean. The tiniest objects and dirt will come flying in if not.

You'll have the rear belts rattle and you'll get a lot of debris sucked in from the bed. The newer Tundra has two mini spoilers that help reduce if not eliminate the bed turbulence.

As juvenile as it is, I love rolling the window down at stop lights when another truck pulls up behind me.

I have a tonneu cover that I keep clean so debris isn't too much of an issue. I really wish someone would make a rear screen for these trucks. I think with a large 3D printer a person could make a screen frame that could be put on with 3 m tape.

I would also like to be able to send my wife into the truck bed to check the trailer hitch or get drinks out of the cooler without stopping.

On 1.0, 2.0, and 2.5 your fine. On the 2022 Tundra were not sure if the bed will fly off, the front axle will fall off, the sunroof will implode. Since Toyota has chosen to instead of wasting money testing this truck we will just let the customer be our crash test dummi........people.

Just out of curiosity OP if you didn’t think you could travel with the window down …when did you think you could use the down feature?

It is fine. Manual says not to do that, because exhaust can enter the cabin but I think we all do. As mentioned before, make sure the bed is clean or any dirt and crap back there will fly up into the cab.

Picnics, waiting for the wife while she is shopping or to throw beer cans in the bed when parked or maybe as a portable deer blind?

Toyota actually tells us not to drive with it down, only to use parked, truck not running, because of fumes.

I think it's in the manual somewhere.

The only time mine is up is at night when I’m sleeping or torrential down pour (which doesn’t happen so much in SoCal). Other then that it’s always down, all 5.

There was that one time a leaf blew in from the bed, swirled around, and then slapped me square in the face though. :anonymous:

First thing we do when we get in the truck, if it's nice out and we aren't running a/c.....roll down the rear window and throw it in Tow Haul.

I've seen that as well; but I wonder if the spirit of that cautionary line doesn't emanate from someone sitting in their garage w/the truck running and the rear window down???? Kinda like the whole floor mat campaign...

Anyhow, while I'd never advocate anyone operating outside of the scope of their owner's manual, I can't image that if you are running at least one more or two more windows down that it wouldn't prevent exhaust fumes from entering and pooling up in the cab. For years, if I wanted the sunroof open (but didn't want to crack the side windows), I'd crack the rear slider and it would eliminate the sunroof noise and any unwanted wind in your face. But, that's just me!

I just hope this doesn't turn into another towing thread...

Two years, EVERY chance I get. The cabin dusting from bed debris is the only negative I've encountered.

Never knew the manual said don't drive with it down. But yeah, the two reasons I see they listed don't concern me much.
