By no means does it mean that it is not a great album. I am just no sure hearing it for the first time would be a different experience.

But if you like They’re Only Chasing Safety you have to like Drawing Black Lines to so the comment should be equally deserving.

Drawing Black Lines just does not have as good album art. The DBL Dragon is pretty cool but there is just something about that picture from They’re Only Chasing Safety.

18 years later and that picture is still mesmerizing to me and I honestly can’t tell you specifically what it is.

Lots of good choices. Let me throw out Dire Straits as another alternative

1982, Dark Side of the Moon on headphones, just laying in the dark as a teenager. Nerdy loser kid, but I 'cut loose'...bought myself a blue velour round bed with stereo (and mirrors!) built into the half canopy...so in a fuzzy blue Pacman with music traveling through my head....smiling as I type this up.

    I just turned 60..:eek2:
My first concert was Fleetwood Mac at the Cotton Bowl in 1978.
    Pretty much the Rumors tour.
Bob Welch, Little River Band, Steve Miller, and Fleetwood Mac, the show was literally etched into my mind forever.
I've seen hundreds of shows since then.
As well as taking my now adult kids to hundreds of shows.

Yep, Agree on Dire Straits...Brothers in Arms is great, though Sultans of Swing is my favorite song of theirs.

A few of mine would be:
    1. Sublime - 40oz To Freedom
    2. Tool - Ænima
    3. Metallica - …And Justice For All

I agree with the philosophical comment, but with these, I am very happy when I get to just put them on and listen to the whole album without interruption. Seems like most of these are coming from the formative years when we really begin to start thinking for ourselves.

That was a great live album, when I was a pup, it was always playing in the background at (Make out) parties. ;)

Great album - well ahead of its time.

In the same genre I’d toss in Guy Clark - Old #1 and Townes - The Late Great Townes Van Zant

Obviously very different musically than Pink Floyd or 2112 - but just as groundbreaking in nature.

Add Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds to that list too - took both genres and mixed them nicely.

Agreed - certain artist/bands just are better experienced in live albums than studio.

Pink Floyd I think does well on some studio albums - but most everyone who experienced them in their prime says the concert experience was unbelievable. The Grateful Dead are another that come to mind as a “must see live” - not only for the band but the people watching too.

Hendrix did stuff live others could only manage in a studio.

I think SRV is one that would have been much better live - not that Texas Flood was by any means a slouch of a record. Tone is just one of those things people talk way too much about from a guitarist - you hear these wanna be intellectuals spout off about such and such and their tone and think “what in the hell are they talking about” - then you hear SRV in his prime on a good recording and you know immediately what amazing tone is.

You guys are making me feel young...

Off the top of my head:

    1. Audioslave (first album, untitled)
    2. Naughty by Nature (first album, and first CD I ever had)
    3. AC/DC - Back in Black

Appetite for Destruction/GNR rocked my world. Then Nevermind came a few years later and did the same in a different way.

Edit: One was a tape and the other CD. I still have them both!

Exit Stage Left by Rush, and Room 335 by Larry Carlton. I had to include two. These both definitely "changed my life".

Yea - I was around 13 when Appetite came out - at the time it was literally a “I don’t know what in the hell this is moment - it’s be never heard anything like it” moment and loved it.

Nevermind was kinda like that - but had the advantage of a childhood friend who had relocated back from Western Washington State just before after living there for 3 years and turned me onto a lot of the grunge scene early.

The funny thing is GnR set a 5 year run of corporate created bands - not that most weren’t musically talented - just that a PR machine hyper the living hell out of these guys in an effort to create the next Zeppelin. Tales of outrageous behavior were eaten up by kids reading the label controlled magazines and some of these bands were more than happy to play the role.

Then came Nirvana - the complete 180 of what the late 80s pop/metal scene was. They put out music on tiny (and nearly broke) Sub Pop - Curt was naturally shy and not engaging to media types at all. If it wasn’t for the fact Geffen was ready to push them much in the same way other labels had handled all those 80s bands - they probably never would have hit the peaks they did.

But between the Geffen PR team, an album that was just naturally attention grabbing and different than all the non RnR stuff that was music in 1990-1991 - they just exploded on eager kids looking for a new sound and some hard driving rock.

I’m interested to learn you’re having this experience. To date (several years), the very first song Spotify adds to any of my play lists has been so obviously “wrong” that I stop what I’m doing to stop and exit the playlist. I’m glad it works for you!

Spotify can be hit and miss for me in that regard. I mean, what I WAS listening to was maybe sort of in the same vein as what it started playing (I was on an “e essential pink floyd playlist, and then it played Rush at the end of it), but then it took a solid left turn after that… I was more so pleasantly surprised at the sort of stuff it was playing and that I was enjoying the variety (while still sort of tied together in some way) and was being pulled through a whole pile of nostalgia.

The closest you’ll come to this in reality is the first time you listen to a favorite album on a really good hifi system. I remember when I first spun the 180g vinyl of Back In Black…I heard everything completely differently. It’s like it was a living breathing thing, and an mp3 or the radio is just a corpse. Completely different experience. I’m not a full-on audiophile, but I absolutely get why people go down that rabbit hole.

Fleetwood Mac (any), Carole King (Tapestry), and Pink Floyd (any). Because they are good and take me back to my youth. Come to think of it, toss in a little Santana too.

Ok, so I'll echo a lot of the ones listed already such as Floyd, Jimi etc.

Here is one that I doubt will get any mentions though: Phish > Junta
