1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I've gotta ask, whats IDY? First thought was Idylwild. Just as I was attempting to type that, I realized i don't know how to spell it

 

It's spelled Idyllwild though.

 

On a completely different note, here's a Q for anyone who wants to take a stab at it.

I'd seen at least one person on here claim that the 2UZ-FE has two cam position sensors, one on each cam.

But when I look at the ignition system here Toyota only shows one cam position sensor, and it appears to me to be more towards the left bank/driver cam, not the right.

Seems like the location of the cam position sensor is in front of the driver cam, no way it could possible monitor the passenger cam?

 

Mine has only the drivers side cam position sensor harness to plug and unplug when performing the timing belt change. Non-VVti 2000 model.

 

The cam position on my 2006 is on the drivers side... as noted changing the timing belt.. only one

 

Curious why only 1 though.

1GR (V6) has two. What's monitoring the passenger side cam on the 2UZ?

Guaranteed by design!

Meaning none required for the other side. Impossible for it to be off and not impact the first sensor. Fewer sensors mean less to break down.

I was about to ask, "but why put two on the V6 then?" and I read the fine print. Go me.

I also realized the V6 pic didn't upload in my post so I corrected that.

Overkill. I think someone bought a set but can't remember who. Our factory mounts seem to last a long time. Those do look stout though.

 

I am not ignoring this GB thread because I jump the truck, but as far as I can tell, I haven’t had issues yet (never checked, just haven’t experienced obvious problems), and Hulk has about 220K miles… gotta weigh preventative expenses … but only 12k driving like that.

For sure, if you’re not planning to abusively test your 1st gen, I agree these are probably overkill for our trucks, but a good idea for anyone that offroads seriously in the much heavier second and later gens. I’ve seen the damage that hard off-roading does to those….

 

When I replaced mine at 160kish, they were cracked on the rubber where it meets the base, but in no way were they “bad”
Ours look a little more robust than the 2nd gens from the pics

Well I’ve got two gens and yes, I find both have great engines and I expect the drivetrain to be durable on both. However, 1st gen has every part built to last, whereas I’m not certain the oem components on the later gen will be as hardy. They’re not lacking, compared to any other later gen available in the U.S. More like, redesigned with different priorities… roominess, comfort, appearance. A big hint, now that I know, is the change from 6 lugs to 5, as though it wasn’t designed to work.

Dropped the truck off yesterday for inspection and to get the new fuel tank straps installed.

 

Took this from TS, found a pic someone posted of their engine bay 10 years ago. What the hell is that thing over the MC/booster? I have provisions for it on my truck, but it's not installed, and I can't tell where the lines are veering off to.

 

Looks to me like it's part of a catch can system.

 

There was an OEM catch can system for the 1GT?

 

Not that I'm aware of, it looks like they're just making use of those blank holes as a mounting bracket for it. My truck has those holes too.

 

My dumb butt ordered the wrong u-joints. Also the bad one really doesn't want to come out even after meeting Mr BFH and the press. Time to reassess. Since the rear one was giving me trouble, I haven't even bothered trying to remove the front.

I at least lubed the splines on the slip yoke to ease the pain...

 

Angle of the dangle? Or how come they wouldn’t come out for you?

 

Two of the bearing caps are stuck pretty tight to the flange. I was able to hammer out the other two after spraying some WD-40. I was trying to press this cap out by hammering from the top, it's barely budged so far.



Timmy's video shows him using a Pitman arm puller. I have a puller tool but it's not a very good one.

All my driveshaft bolts were pretty dang snug and I had to use a hammer to separate the two pieces at the carrier bearing. It's never been off the truck.
