Let's say you had the ability to erase your memory of any musical album and listen to it for the first time again on a high end sound system. Which one would you pick and why? Which album changed your life for the better and what makes it so amazing?

This is such a hard question for me but I was kind of leaning towards Rust In Peace.

1st CD I ever owned. Dad got it for me when I was 8 when it came out. Living Colour - Vivid; The opening lick on their cover of the Talking Heads "memories cant wait" is still one of the heaviest guitar sounds ever. Thats the reason I wanted to play guitar. Each musician in that band is criminally underrated.

    2. "Axis: Bold as love" - See above. Dad got tired of me "wearing a groove into" the living colour cd on the big family stereo, so he bought me Jimi because "if you want to hear a real guitar player, look no further". Uni-Vibe on "Castles made of sand" is still untouchable.

    3. "Pet Sounds" - Beach Boys. duh

Not to get too philosophical, but I'm not sure I'd want to do this. So much of the music I appreciate the most is also tied to the time I heard it initially/listened to it the most. There are the memories tied to it that couldn't be reproduced by hearing it now for the first time.

Here's Mine - I'm 32, but definitely appreciate the music from a time before.

    Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Can I explain it? Nope. But for some reason that album has stuck with me as one of my favorites of all time.

I agree with this, which is why I shared my "memories/experiences" with each. Honestly, I'd like to go back with the appreciation I have now for those albums and moments and listen to them again on dad's monster stereo. That thing could flip a couch. They dont make those anymore.

Korn - Freak on a Leash. One of the first "heavy metal" albums I was able to buy with my my own money my freshmen year of high school. Not sure it'd have the same effect on me today, but it's the first one that popped in my mind.

I'm with you on this one.

There are so many. Hell, even today I hear things for the first time and they are tied to a memory that I don't ever want to lose. My Spotify went off the deep end yesterday afternoon sometime (I think I actually reached the end of a playlist and it started trying to fill in "similar" songs) - I've been caught in a strange time warp of old Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Metallica, Megadeth, Tool, Van Halen (DLR years) - I honestly don't know what's coming next. It's been incredible.

    Lots.
Showing my age here but... Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. Not much can top my hearing it when it originally came out, a junior in high school lying on my bed in my parents home with my dads Koss headphones turned up really loud. I still remember the awe inspired by the "tricks" and production techniques that were used in creating that ground breaking album produced by Alan Parsons and the members of Pink Floyd. I think the album has held up well through the years, even after decades of constant rotation on "classic rock" sources, due to the aforementioned production values and originality in the concept of the piece. For years it was used in "planetariums" in our area where you could pay to go in and experience the album on a very high end Quadrophonic sound system while reclining on couches in the dark watching a laser light and star show projected on a parabolic ceiling. My friends and I would frequently have an "herbal shooter" or two before taking our then girlfriends to one of those shows on a Saturday night for a "trippy" date and good time. It was awesome to hear that work reproduced on a truly excellent hi-fi instead of the horrible 8-tracks that we all had in our vehicles back then.

After writing all of this out I guess I have to take it all back and say it was best the way I experienced it then, as there is really no way that I could top that experience now. Especially since the impact that album had on my interpretation of the works of all the artists I listened to subsequent to that, much in the way The Beatles Revolver or Sgt. Pepper did before I heard D.S.O.T.M. for the first time.

2nd vote for Dark Side of the Moon. 1st album to pop into my head when I read the post title. Mindblowing as an early teen for me.

    That’s a tough one

Certain albums “benefit” from a high end system and hearing it in an acoustically conducive room.

I mean a lot of great albums - but not everything is “better” on vinyl and by the same thought not everything is better sitting and listening to it and me song after another.

Off top of my head a few from the 90s

    Alice In Chains - Dirt
Nirvana - Nevermind and In Utero
    Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion
    Tom Petty - Wildflowers

Almost anything Jimi Hendrix studio album
AC DC - If You Want Blood - Back in Black and Dirty Deeds
ZZ Top - first album and Tres Hombres
Allman Brothers - live at the Filmore East
Zeppelin - first four really or Physical Graffiti

I mean all of these are great albums in their own right - but if your talking a room alone/first time hearing and with your substance of choice - I’m saying

Pink Floyd - Darkside of the Moon

    or

Beatles Sgt Peppers/White Album (back to back)

I mean these 2 albums not only were great - they changed the way musicians thought and looked at music. Nevermind did in a way too - but I just don’t put it up there with these - kind of like other great albums - it served as a pinnacle of a genre - but these albums CREATED a genre called stoner rock.

Definitely requires a level of open mind that most people wouldn’t have on their first listen over a radio. But right setting and setup - I think even an experienced listener walks away with a new look on these.

    Since there are a lot of Rush/Pink Floyd/proggy guys - here's my contribution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp_Now6WDRc

Check that out as it was 'my generation's' equivalent. That album nearly single-handedly put me into my chase of "making it" as a musician in my 20s. Never got far but did get to share the stage with some idols.

    Album
    1st place:
Project 86 - Drawing Black Lines

I would love to hear it again for the first time.

This album is likely my favorite album and will likely never be surpassed. Musically and lyrically it is Project’s greatest work. I still can listen to the entire album and just enjoy.

    2nd Place:
    Emery - The Weak’s End
Though what @PKFan said really falls into play for this album. I was in a very dark place in life at the time and the album nearly mirrored where I was in life. The album really helped bring me out of that dark place.

Now if you were to ask what Song that changes the game entirely.

If I could go back and hear a song for the first time it absolutely would be
TOOL - Push It (Live off the Salival album)
That version still tends to give me chills.
