22 Tundras with upper control arm issue?

Is this anyone on here? I haven't seen any fail at my work yet but just came across this article yesterday.

Every time I read about a new gen 3 problem I get a little smirk on my face as my 2020 sits in my driveway with not a single issue.

Toyota has really dropped the ball on this new Tundra.

 

My 2022 drives down the road without a single issue…too bad your 2020 has to sit in the driveway to achieve that.

 

For real, these guys crack me up. Like most of us on this forum weren't driving previous gen Tundras and know better. Gtfoh.

 

Seems like another stupid article written by a useless columnist who follows the tundra Facebook pages. They scroll Facebook looking for people reporting problems to write poorly written articles that make things sound catastrophic and widespread. I’ve seen it a few times now. Not saying there aren’t some issues with some 22s, but these articles are a joke.

might want to do an apples to apples comparison of 1st yr 2nd gen vs 1st yr 3rd gen. using a tundra that has had like 13+ yrs of refinement to a generation that barely had a year of working out the kinks not really a good example

 

They really dropped the ball on a brand new, from the ground up truck? You can build a truck where literally every single part is new and not expect to have issues?

What they should have done was incrementally updated the truck over the last 15 years instead of just trying to do it all at once. Every 5 years, tweak something. New transmission, new engine, new suspension. Don't just leave the truck alone for 15 years and then upgrade it all at once, because your reliability fanboi's won't be able to wrap their heads around something not being perfect.

 

I actually like the comparison. 13+ years of refinement up to the 2020 he compared to and that 13+ years still resulted in 5 recalls, 160+ TSBs and numerous NHTSA reports for the 2020 year model. People lose perspective when they aren't objective.

 

in the years since i have started buying toyota's 1984 was my first toyota, i can count on both hands the number of major issues i have had across 20 toyota's. the minor stuff is just that minor.

on the wife's tundra, the biggest minor issue the the rear passenger seat squeaking during the summer and the fog lights bouncing since the housing has a defect. outside of those two items that we just ignore after about a year, we have not had any major recalls or big items to worry about.

edit: and we are waiting for a 2022/23 tundra platinum. regardless of the issues that may or may not happen, we will still get it since we are in it for the long game.

Yes I’m sure it makes you happy to see the rare issue someone has with the Gen 3’s.
Gotta have some kinda self reassurance as to why you didn’t upgrade to the truck that’s better than yours in every way, eh?

 

I would obviously disagree with you. It’s a different platform. I would not not say its better. If you like gadgets and tech, it might be better for you. I don’t need all that. I know I don’t want turbo’s.
We all pay good hard earned money for our trucks. I just want something thats proven dependable and reliable, which I feel is what I got. It has plenty of tech for me. The 3rd gen has it’s issues-as most new models do. I hope Toyota can get them worked out and it will become just as reliable and dependable as the previous gen’s. It’s to early to tell though.

Test driving a hand full of trucks isn’t even remotely close to the same thing as getting them in the hands of thousands of customers.

Coming from someone who works in the defense industry, we try to test as much as possible in every single way we can think of. No matter how thorough we think we are, we still miss things occasionally once things out being used by hundreds or thousands of people.

 

Quality is in the toilet all around…and thats on top of an all new from the ground up platform

When a thread turns into a comparison between Tundra generations...

 

Yeah I wouldn’t say that too loud. It isn't better in every way. And by better, I mean like leaps and bounds better. It more like a puddle jump over. Toyota didn't do a "great" job for it being a total redesign. It has its pros/cons like every vehicle. I can also say that it seems you are the one that needs the reassurance that you made a good purchase, goes both ways. Me personally, I was ready to jump over when my lease ends in mid 2023, now, not so much. And its not the issues or design that was done by Steve Wonder. Its the fact that they are selling for MSRP and are around $10k over the previous 2.5gen. I am not paying that, not for a puddle jump over from the previous model. There is nothing in the 3rd gen over mine that warrants a premium price like that.

 

Anyone driving any generation of this truck right now is a little looney look at the gas prices!

 

Whatever you have to tell yourself.
Gen 3 has:
- more hp
- way more torque
- better fuel economy
- better frame and suspension
- better interior features
I mean I could keep going, but if that’s not better in every way to you, I don’t know what to tell you lol.

 

There’s absolutely nothing at all that points to the 22 being unreliable. Just more coping from non 22 owners. Lol

Once again, it works both way. This is what you have to tell yourself.
HP is like 8 more, puddle jump. TQ, yes, more. MPG, LOL. My 2020 on OEM tires was getting about 1-2 different than actual real world 3rd gen mpg. And it’s a truck, you want mpg get a Prius. And not to mention the price difference between the 2 will take like 10 year to make up for the gas difference, another puddle jump. How’s the frame better, because Toyota commercials told you so. The suspension is nothing new. The from is pretty much the same as the previous gen. The spacer lifts fit either one, so Toyota did nothing there. The rear is just a typical coil suspension. Puddle jump. But to top it off Toyota installs a vintage air bag system to up-charge its customers. That was a leaps and bounds addition there. Then they go and give you less interior room. Bigger turning ratio. Less bed volume and no way of getting in the bed with the tailgate down. No front tow hooks. And still no trans cooler. I could go on. Right now a similar 3rd gen to mine is $47573 msrp. They want $648 with $4750 down for a lease. I pay $383 with $1500 for my lease and I paid $38k OTD. So tell me gain how mcuch better is a 3rd gen for roughly $15k more.

 

Let’s be honest here, at the end of the day there is nothing the 3rd gen can do that the 2nd gen can’t. There isn’t a single job that comes to mind that a 3rd gen is capable of doing safely that a 2nd gen is also not capable of doing. The argument could be made there are things a 2nd gen is more capable of when it comes to the bed and cab space, tow hooks, turning radius etc. The only real difference of importance here is the reliability between the 2 trucks, and if that’s why you’re buying a truck the choice is easy. Frankly that’s the only real reason to buy a tundra over the competition, and with the redesign there has never been less reason to buy a tundra over one of the other brands since it’s prime attribute (simplicity and reliability) has fallen by the wayside.

 

Sheesh, last Gen owners telling themselves whatever they have to to be happy about their inferior trucks.
Even though they know Gen 3 is a better truck, they just keep telling themselves otherwise looking like this:

 

ISince I was a kid I've always stepped on the tire and then swung a leg over the side to climb in the bed. Never thought "I wish I had a step cause this is too hard." Maybe my opinion will change if I ever own a truck that does have a step.
