OME 3"/1" kit goes full extension with a BANG too fast. Why?

Definitely do this. I didn't when I was in your position and wish I had. In summary, get 2883 coils.

 

So I'm kicking around the idea of just going ahead and getting a set of coilovers- Icon or other. I thought also about Kings, but I'd like to support Josh over at 1stGen so I was thinking of purchasing one of the sets they stock. Seems like they're adjustable so if it's too high or low I can adjust them.
Price difference between a new set of OME's and Coilovers are about double. Hopefully someone would buy my current set locally.
Any experience with coilovers and what to expect?

 

Expect them to be adjustable and ride fine on road, great off road. King or Fox.

Yeah he's a guy in Texas that specializes in offroad parts for tundras sequoias and LC's. 1stgenoffroad dot com. I like supporting small businesses. They also have some nice youtube install videos.

 

King, Fox, Radflo, ADS. Skip on the icons. Heard a lot of people complaining about leaks within the first year.

 

Iv'e heard the same from known users and online. First google I find is this thread on TW. Mixed experience but pretty clear if you read this thread.

This is my favorite: Full disclosure, I have king front fox rear.

King is among the best. Fox is a decent option. I wouldn’t run Icon if they gave me a set.

 

@S-Man I’m running the toytec aluma coilovers and love them so far. Obviously the kings, fox, icons, etc are the primo companies but toytecs are a little bit more budget friendly. I know some people have had issues in the past with these but that was an older model. Just an idea

 

I've gone back to this post a couple of times. To me, it seems the lift is more than the truck suspension can handle and that's #1. The upper control arms seem maxed. If that's the case, the sway bars are as well. Maybe the tie rods. Sorry, I haven't read the most recent posts, I keep going to the pictures.

 

Yeah IDK what exactly is physically limiting the downward travel, but I detached the swaybar end links, jacked it up and it was still at 25" from center hub to fender, so no change. I added extended end links while I was at it.
It's unfortunate that this is the situation, I wish there was a way to increase travel, but at this point I'm leaning toward a set of King coilovers. Unfortunately I'm seeing around a 10-month lead time from some suppliers.

 

Just guessing here, but I think your upper ball joints are probably the limiting factor in your downtravel with your shocks/sway bar disconnected.

Tinkerer's Adventure on youtube has made a video where he talks about downtravel limitations on Toyota IFS designs.

I highly recommend watching pretty much every video on Tinkerer's channel, since he explains a lot of concepts that are very important to our trucks.

 

I have extended kings and I think you are just lifted too high. Measure top of the shock to the center of the bottom shock mount when the wheels are off the ground. I'll have to check, but I think if it's at around 19", no bolt in will get you more.

UCA is not even close to limiting, sway bar is off here.


And here's the top hat to the bottom mount. 19.5" is all you get with extended kings. Fox has a touch more. Like 1/4"

 

Update: Bit the bullet and ordered a set of Icon's. Kings are out of stock everywhere- I asked the guy at 4WP what the lead time is looking like and he said at least 14 months
Plan on installing these tomorrow and will report back with measurements and ride quality compared to the OME's. Also coming soon: Like new set of 3" OME Springs/Shocks FS.

Installed them this evening. They ride great in the short test drive I did.
Question: Do I need to get this thing aligned again?

Also of note- I noticed my ABS light came on last week. I discovered why today- it appears the curb side ABS line was broken somehow. Guess I'll be swapping this out too

 

General rule of thumb is to re-align after any suspension or tire change. I know some guys who realign even after tire rotations, but that's overkill IMHO.
