I bought my truck used about two months ago. It has a bakflip bed cover and spray on bedliner. I haven’t used the bed yet but did look in the bed and didn’t notice anything. Today it was 100+ degrees and when I opened the tailgate there was a strong cigarette smell. The bed looks mostly clean with a few dusty looking spots.

I plan to use a car wash self service sprayer to just wash the entire bed.

    Is that my best option?

    Thanks for asking this.

I have a DiamondBack bed cover that is bed lined, and it looks like it is covered in a light dust. I was thinking of pressure washing it, but I’ll be interested to see what others say.

To add to this, what can be used to restore the finish if/when needed?

Any idea how old the liner is? When I got mine done, it had that exact same smell for probably a month or 2. Then it went away.

I bought used with only 2000 miles at the end of March. The carfax report showed the first owner bought it September 2021. So sometime between September 2021 and March 2022 when I bought it. Although I would guess it was done in September. They also tinted the windows and windshield and added Rhino running boards, and Bakflip cover.

When I first bought it and opened the tailgate there was a small hint of Cigarette smell but the temps were in the low 70’s. Now that its 100+ when you open the tailgate the smell of cigarettes knocks you over. 99% of the bed looks clean/new. It’s just a couple of spots that have a little dirt/dust that I assume is cigarette ash.

Spray-on bed liners are pretty bomb proof. I just use normal car wash soap and a stiff bristle brush when I need to clean mine.

Whatever the smell is, just take the cover of, wash everything down and let it air out for a few weeks. It should be GTG

Shine supply Clutch is a awesome product to spray on after it’s cleaned to give it a new finished look.

I think I’m more curious about the previous owner sneaking into the bed of the truck to rip darts and hotbox themselves. :monocle:

Funny you say this, I bought my truck new with the factory spray in liner and added the BAK Revolver cover. On warm sunny days I too get a tobacco smell from bed. I thought maybe it was from bagged mulch I brought home and the one bag leaked a little. I pressure washed the bed and still get the smell on warm days…

I honestly thinks it’s the liner. Like I said, mine brand new smelled like cigarettes for a month or 2. I kept thinking I was insane. Just must be the way it smells.

Mine has had the same cigarette smell since new. It's better than it used to be, but still there. I plan on washing it with soap and airing it out, but I don't know that the smell will ever truly go away.

ROFL I traded my 09 with a beat up Bakflip and a spray in on it a couple months ago. Seeing the first post initially had me wondering if I managed to bake in the smell from the cigars I used to sneak while sitting on the tailgate drinking and smoking after I put the kid in bed and before the wife got home from work. Then I was gonna look for another post from the same user in the engine forum that started with "Hey, new to Tundras, just picked up this 09, anybody know what drastic coolant level drops mean."

I washed it out twice at the car wash and in my driveway a few times. Then drove around with the cover open to help air it out. Today it still smells like cigarettes!

Interesting discussion. I smoke cigs and have never noticed that smell even in triple digit heat and truck being outside. Maybe my nose is just burned out lol

I think it’s interesting that several people here who bought new from factory are reporting the same cigarette smell with spray bedliner and Bakflip cover combo.

That is interesting. Mine has Line-x bedliner but no cover and despite my wife and I being very sensitive to cigarette smells we've never noticed any smells in our basement garage. One of my friends only smokes outside and we still smell cigarettes the instant he walks into the house so we'd definitely notice.

Well, I have been driving around with the bed uncovered since my last post and today the bed still smells like cigarettes smoke. I'm starting to wonder if the place that did the spray liner for the original owner had dudes that were smoking while applying the spray or something.

I'm starting to wonder if having another company spray the bed again will cover up that cig smell. It's making me nutz that the bed smells so bad.

FWIW, mine is finally getting better, but it has been a year. I keep my tonneau cover on and closed all of the time, though.

My Tundra is carrying a Line-X premium bed liner and a Line-x LXP tonneau cover. Never a bad odor. I really like this combination and I have had great luck with it.

You have used that stuff on a spray bedliner and it solved stinky odors?

I wish it had a bedliner mat instead of spray on. If it was a bedliner mat I could just easily remove it and replace. Since mine is a spray on I assume I would have to pay someone to spray another layer or remove the current spray and replace.

The problem though is that maybe the spray in liner IS the problem. Others have mentioned a cigarettes smoke odor as well. Would suck to have it sprayed again only to have the odor remain.

Have you contacted the place that did it and see if it’s normal and will go away or if it’s an issue?

I think I replied earlier in this thread that mine smelled like that too after just getting it done. But it went away after a while.

I bought the truck used on Carvana and had it shipped from Missouri to Texas. So I'm not sure who was used to spray the bedliner.
