I have a 2010 Tundra Crewmax with 155k miles. Yesterday I was driving through town and needed to make a sudden stop. I was going about 35 MPH and when I slammed on my brakes the ABS kicked in instantly and did not allow me to stop. I had to head to the shoulder and re-pump the brakes to stop. I have no problem stoping normally, but I notice if I suddenly slam on the brakes I can make this happen at any speed. I have no codes.

Anyone have this happen? Any ideas would be appreciated.

ABS systems can be kinda weird to get used to…I would suggest a safer following distance to try to avoid “slamming” the brake pedal.

I've been driving vehicles since the mid 90's with ABS - this isn't the issue. In this case (sudden stoping) it is like I have little to no brakes at all on the truck. If I "re-pump" the brakes I stop as expected. I'll take the truck to the dealer, but wondered if anyone else has experienced this. It is a little scary to have no brakes when you need them.

Did you change the brakes recently? It sound like there is either air in the line or a bad master cylinder.

Thanks. I'm due to replace the brake fluid, so I'll be getting that done as well. I replaced my brakes about 3 years ago, so nothing recent.

If it’s the original fluid, at 12 years old, it’s due to be changed. Probably moisture in the fluid which is causing the seemingly failure feeling on hard stops.

I know there is a "feature" where if you hit the brakes hard and fast the ABS kicks on more easily as opposed to a slow steady application of the breaks. However, I found mine was overly sensitive when I stabbed the brakes quickly. I ended up servicing the brakes as they were getting rusted and not moving overly freely. Once I did that, the ABS didn't seem to kick on as easily and the truck stopped better.

    Function before sparkle.
How are your tires? If your tires are very worn they could be losing enough traction that the ABS kicks in sooner than expected.

Have it checked via tech stream, or a more advanced OBD2 reader that is able to check ABS codes... you may have a C1201 code... I had a similar sitiation on a yellow light and I skidded clear across an intersection....Not the funnest way to figure out ABS had left the chat.. Got a zero point calibration and its been gone since... Still atock height...
