I'm in for a y strap group buy

 

I feel ya. I hadn’t even thought about someone stealing my spare but my spare isn’t on a beadlock rim. Sadly tho, these days I worry about my truck being stolen all the time. You’re in SD, I’m in LA so I’m guessing you may have the same worries I do. Not long ago I’d leave my doors unlocked without worry… Neighbor had his Cats stolen, another had her mint! El Camino stolen and a few weeks ago we had one of those big group robberies at T-Mobile. Buddy is a detective with the local PD and he’s told me they basically have to release any lowlife if physical harm isn’t involved.

I looked into LoJack but they stopped accepting new customers. What do you all do to protect your trucks?

 

When I lived in a bad area years back, I only drove my car on the weekends, so I’d leave a dead battery in the car during the week or when on travel.

Sure enough, while on travel, my ignition column got jacked one weekend but never went anywhere due to the dead battery.

A hidden fuel cut off line or ignition cut off switch might work if you keep it where nobody can guess.

 

She’s my daily so battery changes would be a pain. I’ve removed the ignition fuse over night a few times but it gets annoying. I’ll look into both fuel and (just remembered) a “kill” switch.

Sounds like a switch for the starter wire or fuel sender ground is the way to go. A battery switch would reset everything each time you disconnected.

It’s funny having 33’s, lots of stuff is spec’d for 35-40’s. Meanwhile that 1” strap says 26-32”. I guess you have to mostly guess and check on these things and hope the 2” gets snug enough to hold it tight.

 

I was wondering about that gap myself, I would guess the bigger.

 

Anyone used 1aauto?

I've used carparts.com, partsgeek.com, rock auto and maybe A1, - it looks the same as the first two. I like those places for things like head/tail lamps, fender/wheel well liners, some actuators like a hatchback lock (chevy), I think the 4R fenders came from partsgeek, etc.

 

I'm gonna go look at the site some more, but no way I'm getting 1" strap for 33+

 

Worth a call, but I am 100% sure this can be adjusted down to a 32" easy. Might have to do a cut and melt on the ends. I would rather have more strap to work with than too little. And the difference between 1" and 2" is not a strength concern for me, although there is a difference, but 2" baby!

I’m an Eagle Scout, I’d just weave my own straps from camel hair or something.
Actually all this x2 spares talk, has me wondering if I could piggyback a second spare carrier onto my current swing out. Pretty sure is POSSIBLE but not sure about the logistics of getting to the original mounted swing out spare. Anyways I’m trying to see if any of their straps could help or make the setup tactical…….. then maybe I’ll subject myself to running another GB

 

Do NOT add any extra weight, especially tire and wheel weight to a swing out.

All this 2X spares talk makes me want to hide in my room. My one spare cost me a shit ton....If you decide to punk out and not share your group buys skills yet again, you are dead to me.

Are you an Eagle? My son is Life, working on the last few badges which, I swear, requires full family participation. This summer he’s focused on completing the 8 hours community service and meeting with a city leader, to finish Citizen in the Community. And one more step that’s been on hold, to complete Camping. Hoping to keep him on track to complete remaining badges by next spring, then his project by next summer.

Hmmmn, maybe I can influence him toward camel hair straps… for the T.c “community”.

 

If you even hint that you’d take lead, I’ll walk you through the one I did, and I’m sure Toast will tell you the details on his. Basically, any overview we give would just get your head open to prepare to do a GB any way the vendor prefers, as they will already have in mind what they are willing to do.

Congrats to him for sticking with it this long! Yeah some of the final badges do require a lot of participation and time. Our troop was very active and had a very high rate of fledgling(haha boy to eagle) rate, where I heard a lot of other troops it was super low. One kid in our troop got his at like 12, basically the youngest you could have actually earned it based on minimum times in each rank, had two sashes FULL of merit badges. But his dad was a huge help to the other boys, organizing things that needed to happen to get us our hours and badges. Some of my still best friends/strongest bonds were thru scouts.
Not sure if it’s to late to find a group; but the national jamboree was also something worth doing(almost a years worth of planning) but it was bad ass to see all of it as a young punk with a skate board in DC.

 

His troop has been pretty prolific turning out Eagles, but you cannot join until 12yo or 5th grade, so I cannot do the math on a 12yo Eagle. His troop is not like an older cousin’s small troop where everyone planned and worked toward badges together. We don’t haven’t let him short cut by attending badge days, which we know some rely on, but we do help by focusing him on badges that our current circumstances will afford opportunity… like he did Citizenship in the World* the year we went to Belgium, did Citizenship in the Nation last summer, during which we visited Virginia/D.C.

We do have a group going to Jamboree but he’s only interested in staying home so he can play basketball every day. We’re grateful his passion is something relatively “safe” he can develop himself doing; however, he’s so focused on it that he wants to stop everything else. That’s why the parental nagging involvement is so important. He’s also a black belt, and wants to let that go. Uh, nope. Not until you get into college, or don’t.

*Edit: BSA recently did away with Citizenship in the World, and added a diversity badge… < >…. We will be okay with him doing that one at a badge day.

Do you not like/encourage the badge days because it’s basically a free pass? I can’t remember exactly, but I feel like we used to do a lot of the badges together; I think the boating and water sports stuff mainly because it was safer in a bigger group and we’re not known for boats down here haha
Our troop went out once a month, each trip revolving around a badge or two usually, so if you wanted that badge or were interested, you’d be on that trip. So I don’t know if we ever had badge “days” so much as badge “weekend outings”

for my eagle project, I organized a cleanup in the desert of a shooting spot that people trash, pulled out 4 trailer loads of trash and BS.

 

I’m all good with troop organized badges. And, yes, water badges are best done in groups! I also bought in to the benefits of summer camp for first year scouts to knock the “boring” ones out: swimming, first aid, knots. But right away I saw, those kids don’t retain the information at that age. Over time though, with repeated exposure and practice during camp outs, those that remain involved finally “get” those skills. So it works out well, imo, that scouts that attend summer camp their first year make friends in the troop, and that builds a good foundation for them to see it through to Eagle.

But yeah, I think badge days are cool for general badges, but getting to knock one of the 12 Eagle-required badges out in a day is not the right way. So regardless of what others permit, my kid had to do those the “hard” way. I think he’s grown to appreciate it tho-.
