"Going back to the Corvette/Viper bit, the more accurate way to use the analogy would be getting upset that a Viper and a 'Vette are both being called sports cars. The defining element there is the two seat configuration with a performance bias. A 'Vette is not a Viper, but both are sports cars. The differences between the two do not change that, just as pattern welded and Wootz are Damascus steels. Damascus is not as specific a term as you are making it out to be."

    So....what you saying is:

All bourbons are whiskey; but not all whiskies are bourbon????

I can't say for sure, as I don't drink, but is that the common understanding? If that statement is true, then the equivalent would be that all Wootz is Damascus but not all Damascus are Wootz.

    Oh, he’s big mad!

    You don’t know humor.
    I crack myself up.

How conveniently you skip the part about you calling others idiots.

And no one misrepresented what you said, they corrected you.
    There’s a difference.

Too bad you think we got heated over your incorrect assertions.
Seems like you’re the only one that’s heated.

Maybe if you reached down and untwisted your panties, your attitude would be much different.

    In the common vernacular.

But as I've been saying this whole time, the common vernacular is wrong, as it often is with many things.

Those little RC quad-copters aren't actually drones despite everybody calling them that.

A "theory" is not just a random guess, despite people using the word for that.

The phrase "A moot point" doesn't mean "A point that has no relevance" despite people using it that way.

The phrase "I could care less" means you actually do care at least a little, despite people using it to mean the opposite.

The word "axe" is not a synonym for "ask" even though a lot of people use it that way.

The question "What pacifically is the issue?" makes zero sense despite the fact that a lot of people use that word instead of "specifically".

And don't even get me started on "our" vs "are", "its" vs "it's", "There" "their" and "they're", "effect" vs "affect", "accept" vs "except", and "ensure" vs "insure".

Hell we've even got people saying men are women and women are undefinable beings that can only be defined by themselves, or biologists. Mothers are no longer mothers but "child bearing persons" and men can have periods.

And "damascus" is NOT a catch-all term for any and all steel with patterns in it, despite it being used that way by many people. And frankly the word "damascus" was used to refer to one specific metal with specific properties for a FAR longer period of time that it has been commonly used to refer to anything vaguely similar in appearance. Go back to any period of time between say the year 900, to the year 1970, and try to tell somebody that pattern welded blade is damascus steel. That's over 1000 years of history compared to maybe 50 years of marketing wankery.

There are a lot of words people commonly use for different things. But just because it is common doesn't make it right. Words have meaning, and that's important.

Anyway as others have pointed out, I'm just repeating myself at this point. I've said all there really is to say on my end. If you don't agree with me, that's fine. Have a good one.

No. I'm not mad. I already told you that. And I believe I am a more legitimate authority on my own emotional state than you are.

I never called anybody an idiot. If I did, feel free to quote it and post it to prove me wrong.

No, people literally misrepresented what I said and then "corrected" those misrepresentation.

Yes, once people start making personal attacks and calling for others to hit the ignore button on you, that has left the realm of civil debate and "humor".

There is no attitude. go back and re-read my comments. You will find no emotional outbursts or name calling. Only civil discussion and listed facts.

Or you could make the statement you'd like to make without dragging the bullshit out for 5 fucking pages.
We get it, you're an expert in metallurgy, probably an expert in everything else too.

I work with a guy like you.
What ever one knows about a topic, he knows a lot more about it.
If you shot a 12-point deer, he shot an 18-point.
If you caught a 10-pound bass, he caught a 20-pound bass.
If you like Glocks, he owns 10 of them, mention Sigs, he owns 10 of those too and proceeds to describe every one of them in detail..
Most of us just end up walking away from him as he talks.
He bores the shit out of people at work, many of us go the other way when we see him.
And when you do get stuck talking to him, he ALWAYS has to get the last word in.

You might be a great guy and very smart, but you come across as boring as dogshit..
As well you're lacking a sense of humor..

Perhaps you could start your own thread on knife manufacturing and spread your vast knowledge to the ignorant masses..
Because we are all stupid peons living in your world...

As @Hightide stated, you must be a hoot at social gatherings..

    Happy 4TH...

I think I'll go make myself a grilled cheese sandwich, mayo on the bread, butter in the pan.
Mght even throw some ham on it...:eek2:

    1. Yeah I tried that. I made my statement and thought nothing more of it. Then people kept saying I was wrong so I defended my statement. That's how conversation works.

    2. I never claimed to be an expert at anything and have said as much several times now. I'll say it again. I am not an expert at ANYTHING. There are an infinite number of things I know nothing about, a few things I know a little about, even fewer I know a lot about, and none that I know everything about. And why do you and others keep assuming you know everything about me based on this conversation?

    3. How many pages are appropriate? Why is 5 pages bad? Would you have had a problem if it was only 4 pages? And why do you blame me for "dragging it out" when there are several other people participating in the conversation just as much as I am? Do you feel obligated to read all 5 pages?

    4. I have no desire to one-up anybody. That isn't what I'm doing. All I am doing is pointing out that a knife isn't made of what the guy said it was made out of. That's all. And if anybody had any legitimate evidence to prove me wrong, I would accept it and move on. But nobody has done that.

    5. If I bore you, you don't have to read my comments. I am not forcing you to read them.

    6. You jumped into this conversation. I didn't invite you. I am only responding to people who respond to me. If you feel stuck, that's on you.

    7. Again, there was never any humor here. Telling people to just ignore me and calling me dumb and boring, making accusations about my character, isn't humor. It is people lashing out emotionally, I assume, because they can't actually refute my claim. My sense of humor works just fine. In fact I started a thread on this forum that is nothing but a big joke. https://www.tundras.com/threads/serious-problem-with-my-08-tundra.109059/

    8. If I wanted to start a knife manufacturing thread, I would have. Again, all I did was post a short one line comment that the knife wasn't damascus. It was everybody else who lost their shit over it as if I somehow personally attacked them.

    9. Why are you so heated?

As the title says... "Method of making steel in the STYLE of Damascus"

Jean Jacques Perret never claims to be making Damascus steel. He claims only to be making steel that resembles Damascus.

As I said, words have meaning. And Jean Perret seems to have chosen his words carefully.

Ignorance of the common vernacular could lead people to showing up at a gay parade because they’re really happy.

Which is why I never made any claim that people should be ignorant of common vernacular. Only that common vernacular is not always accurate or factual.

There’s some inherent risks in trying too hard to find ‘common ground’ in some situations.
