I know the halogen harness recall has gotten a lot of press, but I have a question for you guys as to what you’d do in my (admittedly paranoid) position.
Toyota dealer told me today that, for this recall, they pull the headlights and front bumper off to perform the harness replacement per the recall.
This worries me because I have a FabFours Matrix bumper with a decent Smitty winch and two pairs of Diode Dynamics driving lights. A very heavy and expensive “singular part”, to say the least.
I’m wondering if I should quickly swap back in the factory bumper so nothing happens (like a rough disassembly/re-assembly or a drop, God forbid) to my beloved aftermarket parts. Do y’all think I’m being too mistrustful of the dealer mechanic and should just let it go in as-is or would you swap it and keep everything safe and sound?

I wouldn't let the dealer mess with my custom anything.

I would love to see the written guidance that the dealers have for the repair. Everything that I have seen so far is relays being added and them splicing in about 12 inches of harness. There was a post about it the other day...he said it looks like a total hack job and will get better pics. They are not replacing the entire harness.

Start at post #302. I don't see why they would need to pull the bumper.

I would not be surprised if every mechanic has their take on it. Makes me even more want to swap out so I can see what they did when I swap back. This makes me want to pull the SP-9100 and winch control head as well, gads. Not to be too proud, but I did a very careful and well planned job wiring things in, from the SP to the winch control connection.

I assume your going to Steve landers. I have my recall appointment with them on The 11th. I don’t know exactly what they are doing for the headlight recall but they said it’s scheduled for a 4 hour window

Interesting… please let us know. Mine will be at Fowler Toyota in Tulsa so I can slip out the back door at work when Lumbergh isn’t looking.

I don’t understand why they’d need to pull the bumper off at all.

Yeah that would make me incredibly nervous. I'd rather spend the money and swap out the headlights for some LED's on my own.

So I’m liking the LED conversion option. Any real reason to get those Morimotos over OEMs? They’re like $900 more.

People that have the Morimoto’s love them. They’re pretty badass looking too. I did not want to shell out that much so I went with the TRD Pro LED’s with the black housing. I’m real happy with them. Amazing improvement from halogen and they look great. You just need a wiring harness from ihacker
