    Hey everybody!

3rd gen Tacoma owner here. Actually it's totaled so I'm in the process of getting a new truck. I was going to get another Tacoma but I'm considering a full size. My current Tacoma a payload is less than a thousand pounds. With four occupants in the vehicle that leaves very little left over a trailer or cargo. The Tacoma is really not that much more fuel efficient than the full size tundra. I assume that the Tacoma is probably a little bit better off road being it smaller and lighter weight but I don't do a lot of off-roading anyways. I'm looking at an SR5 with the TRD off-road package. My biggest concern is buying a completely redesigned truck that hasn't been on the market long. I've heard they're already having issues with the turbo wastegates. I want something reliable and the wife and I have always stuck with toyota.

So are any of you guys concerned about the 2022 Tundras reliability?

Is the Crewmax significantly roomier than the crew cab? I've got two children and I'd like to have something that's good for longer trips but I'm just not sure if it's worth the extra cost.

Any other advice? If I pay MSRP am I getting a decent deal?

    Thanks for the help!

    Welcome!

I don’t have any experience with the 3rd gen 2022.

Hope you find what you’re looking for

    2016-2017 models have depreciated a bit :)

check out the 3rd gen forum here for tons of info on the 2022s. Honestly, if reliability is most important, then you do not want the first year of a brand new design regardless of the manufacturer.

I am sure you can find some very lightly used 2.5 gens right now with people trading in trucks for more fuel efficient vehicles.

Unfortunately someone rear-ended me and totaled my current truck so I have to jump right into something else. You're right otherwise I would wait a year or two

I wonder when 3 and a half miles per gallon pays off a 40k + purchase with higher costs. Maybe 10-20 years in break even? Crazy.

If you’re in a rush I’d look at whatever is in your area and fits your needs best. Tundra is a lot larger to drive and park, and does get a few mpg worse, do you need the pros?

Main reason I got my last two Tundras was they were significantly cheaper than Tacomas. Kind of hard no to when you literally save money, even with the gas difference ha.

Man everything that is used that is a few years old sells just as much as new right now, and everything new is either a wait or way above MSRP

I just can't bring myself to buy a used truck that sells for the same price as new. At least that's how it is with the tacomas. I paid $33k out the door for my 21 Tacoma back in the summer of 2020 and insurance is paying me $39k for it with 40,000 miles. Seems like I'm making out like a bandit until you see how much used ones cost.

Parking is a big concern for sure. Give me the pros? For me it's Towing and payload. I just wish the Tacoma had more than 950 lb of payload capacity. Really not much better than a minivan

Yeah I feel your pain. The good news is the used car markups seem to be going down right now. If you can, maybe wait a couple of months until summer is over, it SHOULD go down more by then.

I really dont have any issues parking with the Tundra. The front and rear anytime camera really helps though when you have shorter spots.

Tundra is like 1,600 lbs or something, depending on trim, so not much better.

But that’s it’s for pros pretty much. Space/capacity.

It’s no 2500/3500 HD truck though if you’re looking to haul more weight. I can’t even put my minimal welding setup in the Tundra. Overweight.

I’d look for a used 2nd Gen, personally, and bank some of that cash. 2012-2015 were solid years for the Tacoma and should be able to find one for a little too high rather than way to high, hopefully!

Well, used could be an option. 2016-2018 models have had a good record and they have the trans cooler where 2019 and up do not. 2018 will have some of the TSS stuff, 2016/2017 will not.

And if you need a car quickly, then a 2022 probably will not fit the bill unless you luck into finding one someone ordered and didnt take and somehow the dealer still has it.

    05-06 and/or 16-17 are the two Tundras I shop for every time I need a truck :D

Welcome and greetings from Minnesota. To avoid possible new model reliability issues, strongly consider a low mile gen 2.5. You can always upgrade to a gen 3 a few years down the road.

    - Yes reliability is a concern. But remember..anything mechanical can and does break. I wonder what the true number of issues vs. People driving 22's with no issues are. But.... there are bugs to work out in every new model year.
-Yes, the crewmax is significantly roomier than the crew cab, especially if car seats are still involved. You definitely won't regret the crewmax size in the long run.
-MSRP , unfortunately seems to be a good deal nowadays. Although Toyota never had massive GM/Ford discounts and rebates to begin with.

Buy yourself a beater for about 4 grand. Drive it for 4 months then buy what you want when the recession hits home. Sell the beater for 2 grand but you'll likely save 4 grand an up in the new or used Tundra.
