    I have had USPS lose a knife. Heartbreaking occurrence. I would prefer to ship UPS, but the nearest drop point is about a 2 hour round trip. The absolute best is when a buyer gets to come visit and pick up a knife in person. I love giving people a chance to see a really great looking tundra and tour my shop!

    That would be really cool. Depending on how much time you have and the weather we might do some clamming or chase the wild mushrooms!

    There’s no limits to what you can do and expand into;
    Blades can be mono steel or Damascus. Damascus patterns are limitless and you can mix in all kinds of different metals and then go for canisters and mosaic patterns. Handles can be from anything you can dream of;woods, metals, bone, stone, and any combinations. Sheaths can be as intricate as the knives, if you learn the skills and have the tools. I recently started stabilizing my own handle materials and doing epoxy casting. The sheaths, I have been doing for only about a year. The kid i relied on moved to Michigan. I’m considering learning how to do engraving and casting brass. So much to do and learn!

    I like learning about all the new(ish) super steels. I have an OTF in Elmax that will remain a pocket princess; but I have an M390 assisted opener I'll be using hard, and I just got a Bark River Gunny in CPM 3V that I plan on straight fv(k!ng up over the next few years' camping and other shenanigans. I'll like to learn the science of how to harden and anneal the steel to its optimal characteristics, and I'll certainly be interested in the art of the blade shape and scales. Like you said, so much to do and learn.

    Yep yep, it’s hard to keep all the modern steels straight. Many are eliminated for me for several reasons;
    Not suitable for Damascus
    Not practical to forge
    Very limited parameters for heat treating
    Not suitable for hand filing or grinding (mostly used by machine shops)

    An important truth is that in a blind test, most chefs and users could probably not tell the difference.
    Good heat treatment and edge geometry is more important, as long as good steel is being used.
    Most stainless steels are inferior to carbon steels, but in our world the majority of people don’t want to take time to care for a blade that can stain and oxidize.

    I think stains on a blade (not rust) are fine - maybe part of its story; but it's not that much trouble to touch a little oil on a blade every once in a while. I firmly dislike the current trend of PVD'ing a blade. Why hide the steel with something that'll look like shit if you really use it?

    There’s a pretty solid effort to make something trendy that will require less work. Course grinding, dimple finish, cerecote, lots of things to keep a shop from actually having to finish a whole blade, lol. Combine that with a cnc or computer guided water blast cutter, and you can greatly minimize your time needed to turn out knives.
    I’m not trying to compete on this level.

    The key is to also include rophynol and a plan B to round out the recipe. And a dash of cinnamon.
