I’m sure others have noticed this: tow truck drivers put their kids in the biggest vehicles they can find. Yes gas prices are too high but I do feel safer in my tundra.

I don't spend enough on fuel to worry about it much yet but I'm not above trying wacky stuff to see if it helps. It's 95 outside today with a dewpoint of about 75 and even with all this blocked off and the AC cranked up the highest temps I saw was 198 coolant 195 transmission. No trailer fwiw and they would come out if I was towing. If the fan spun up other than in downtown traffic I didn't hear it. I'm not sure if I can get away with blocking more without making the fan clutch upset so this could be a good stopping point.

They do seem to help a tad on the instantaneous freeway mpg numbers and hopefully it isn't just confirmation bias. In town there isn't any difference. Time will tell if they were worth the effort. Gosh do they show mosquitoes though.

If I didn't need my truck, I'd be driving something else that's better on gas and easier to maneuver and park.

Probably joking, but here you go:

Not my van but I have one. “Can” tow a little, available in AWD but it’s really low. Needs a lift to have any sort of clearance, even for towing. Toyota has a 3/4” lift and Journey Off-road have 2 and 3” and you can put bags or sumos on the rear to help with sag.

Just drove mine 6,000 across the country loaded up with 4 people, 3 weeks worth of gear including an XXL rooftop carrier and got 30mpg. I was hoping for better but the 75mph interstates in the West are mpg killers. I get 34mpg combined regularly, short city trips easily 40mpg.

I love my Tundra but Toyota makes one hell of a hybrid minivan. Not words I thought I would say, but image be damned it’s a spacious, comfortable, and efficient beast.

    When it works, it works.

...I might be forced to use the boatramp under cover of darkness were I to attempt.

There are a LOT of lifted domestics up at the lake, so it would really be pretty fun! ...until you flood the rear cargo area :(

We will soon be roadtripping, and taking the Tundra in order to haul copious amounts of baby gear. Won't be towing any distance, so I'll be happy if we get 16mpg.

If they're 4.0L six speeds they get about the same as a 4.6L Tundra.

I was so stoked, over a hundred miles into the trip and it was 20.5 mpg on the dash and 19.5 on the scangauge with the cruise set at 70 and AC running. Then some fool wrecked and I was stuck in gridlock for 90 minutes and my numbers dropped down. Back up to 19.4/18.2 at the end of the trip so still not awful.

Maybe on the return I'll have a fortunate wind and get close to that unobtainable 20 actual. The grill plates are like a magic trick. Temps held 195 engine and 201 trans pan after 4 hours of driving so it's probably close to the right amount for an unloaded truck.

Damn! Only 19.6 hand calculated. I did give in and go the 75 speed limit though on the way home.

I considered buying a minivan years ago but they all got <20mpg, so i just kept my GMC Yukon. The new Sienna is a sweet ride. I'm curious what kinda mpg do you get going 80? I do a lot of highway commuting to work without traffic or stops which is hard on the mpg numbers. The car i have now gets about 32mpg doing it.

I agree, I didn’t make the minivan swap until I saw these mpg numbers and ran the math vs a new three row SUV. Had a 2000 Suburban for a long time that was the family road trip vehicle.

Cruising at 80mph+ is probably 28-32mpg depending on conditions, but they seem to like the flat land and warm climate in FL. I got 32mpg driving down to Orlando and back, lots of time on I-75 where everyone seemed to be going 80+. I set the cruise on 79 on that stretch, very comfortable to cruise highways in.

Some stretches of I-10, I-20, and I-40 with 75mph speed limits and brutal winds pushed me and my cargo box down to around 29mpg while cruising at 80-82ish.

23,000 on the odometer so far in ~15 months, 32mpg average over those 23k. My personal average is close to 34, the wife is a bit more lead-footed. We have taken it to the Atlantic, the Gulf, and the Pacific, 15 states in all. No issues to speak of so far. *knocks on wood*
