Hello, I'm Joseph and am new to the forum. I have an interesting and I think unique question.

I recently bought a 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 5.7 2wd with 96,000 miles on it. Last oil change was at 89,000 using one of those 10 minute oil change places the previous owner used. I had been researching the oil change procedure and discovered it was the cartridge type element with a plastic housing. Wasn't happy about that but it is what it is.

I studied many videos online and was about to begin. But before removing the skid plate I looked up using a mirror and light and could see the bottom of the plastic housing didn't look like the one that was supposed to be there. I could see no large round silver drain plug in the housing. It was a black piece of some kind in the hole. I then noticed what looked like clips on the sides of the housing.

I did extensive research on the internet for the last 2 days and I could find no one who experienced this. I found pictures of the one that I believe is on there. It appears to be part number 15620-37010 which appears to be for Corollas, Prius and many other Toyota cars. LOL. So I guess the 10 minute oil change put that on there 8,000 miles ago cause I now have 97,000 miles on the truck. Oil level is good, oil pressure is fine and no leaks.

But I have aborted my mission of changing the oil on my own after reading all the horror stories of cracked and stuck housings, etc. I mean if they used the wrong filter I'm quite sure that they didn't torque it properly. And I can't take a change on draining my oil out and then finding out I have a filter that cannot be removed.

I will bring everything to a trusted independent mechanic and get him to do it.

Just thought I would share and invite any comments or suggestions. Or have you ever heard of this? Thanks

Or just buy the Lexus part (all metal) and install it at next oil change. Although prius filters are not really that small, my daughters uses a Purolator PBL20195 spin on (like a real filter s/b), pretty good sized....

You are correct. The width on this filter that's currently on the truck looks the same but it appears to be not as long as the correct filter for the Tundra. Don't really know if this was bad or good or had no effect because at this point it's too late to worry about it.

Double check the PN of the housing. There isn’t actually an OEM listed direct fit for the 5.7L, but the one from the Highlander and other 3.5L motors will work, minus swapping the center tube that goes inside the cartridge.

Thanks. Yeah I wanted to take a pic but I could not get a picture because I had to hold the light, mirror and phone at the same time while half underneath the truck. I just couldn't pull it off. LOL

OK so it sounds like this is just a shortened version of that filter. What throws me is the lack of the silver drain plug at the bottom. That part number I found that looks similar looks like it has a solid black rubber insert or something in it. In other words no way to empty filter before taking it off.

Thanks for that info. Appreciate it. Looks like I might have jumped the gun a little.

The housing is the same, just a longer tube inside.

The bottom of the housing has a plug, that kit has a hose & assembly that screws into where the plug goes and lets you drain it. The filters (OEM) come with a plastic doo hickey that screws in but you have to position the drain pan right under it, the hose is better.

    Good luck.

I found the little drain plug a pain, i just use a futomo valve, allow some drain time and while wearing gloves just remove entire filter housing. yes some oil spills onto gloves yet that is their purpose.
