    Is this on a 2016 or a 2022 Tundra?

They stay on because of the daytime running lights. Once the truck detects daylight is gone the dash lights up and the taillights come on. That's the auto feature

They are daytime running lights (dtr)
You can turn them off in vehicle settings.

Leaving it on auto just means the DRL are on

I was super surprised to find that the headlights in my 08 SR5 are completely manual. No auto feature at all. Even my old 98 Grand Cherokee has auto headlights.

Of course, being a Chrysler product from the late 90s, the electrical is all F'ed up so I had to wire in a manual switch because the headlight switch has gone bad... But it was there! It doesn't change what they were trying to do!
