Quite the opposite, this is a British quirk and goes by the name of a narrowboat.
So, you’re going to need a bit of a history lesson to understand this one. It’s a boat 56’ long and 6’ wide (yes, you read that correctly) and their original function arose during the Industrial Revolution, which we Brits like to think we invented…) In order to transport all this stuff that came about from dumping local cottage industries in favor ofhuge factories and mines sending that stuff everywhere across the nation ( and that trifling thing we used to call an Empire. ) we shipped those goods along new fangled inventions called canals (which the Egyptians had probably beaten us to by several thousand years beforehand but we’re not going to talk about that…) and because we’re nearly as tight in the wallet department as the proverbial Scotsman, we didn’t go overboard on their width. Engines were in their infancy and the barges were towed by horses, and because there’s only so much coal, etc that one horse can tow we ended up with very narrow but long boats.

With the invention of railways and motorized transport the narrow canals fell into disrepair. Todays equivalent are canals like the Suez and Panama but commercial stuff has gone on steroids since the 19th century.

Move to the 20th century. Bigger canals had survived and the old steel barges still knocking about had acquired inboard engines, many of which had been converted into living accommodation and inhabited by an odd breed that acquired the nickname ‘river Gypsies’, essentially hippy types who didn’t want to be tied to a house but often had steady jobs.
In the mid 20th century there was a push to restore the old waterways, the towpaths which ran alongside them had often remained in use as footpaths and, later, cycle path. Some weee obviously lost to road, rail and housing development.
At some some point in the 1970’s some wag hit on the idea of renting narrow boats to folks who fancied bumbling about on the water at a speed of almost nothing.

This particular boat is two months old and bang up to date. The stinky old Diesel engine these boats are known for has gone, replaced by a bank of batteries and an electric motor, the roof bedecked with solar panels (those of you that have traveled to the UK will be starting to question the logic in that move ). When the sun doesn’t come out we can either hook up to shore power at a marina, just like they do in Florida, etc, or resort to the small, relatively quiet inboard diesel generator.
This one is slower than the old Diesel engined boats, so instead of a stately 4mph we can do about 2mph if we don’t want to outrun our ability to recharge.

TlDR: Google narrowboat for a rip-roaring 2-4mph dash on water in a vessel that’s only marginally bigger than a cigar tube.

Typically, how are the insides furnished? Beds, kitchens, bathroom, etc.?

    Yup.
Imagine a small towable RV, squish it and stretch it and that’s pretty much what we have. I’ll put up some pics in the morning.
Double bed in the back ‘room’, then a toilet, sink and fairly generous sized shower in the next. The rest is open plan with a lounge area, seating converts to a single bed (think back to student days and kipping on a couch), followed by a dining area with a table that drops down to give another double bed, and then be a kitchen area with gas stove, fridge, freezer ,sink and storage for all the kitchen itens.
    Storage throughout is fairly generous.

If you were to cram five people on board, you could be totally self sufficient for less than 400 bucks, plus food and beer, per person for a week, longer hires are cheaper, as is out of season but why would you, the UK is hard pushed for dry days in the summer, let alone other times!

I was thinking that sounds expensive until I remembered an RV rental for a week is about the same.

Because it saves you from gravel rash or getting puked on by some random stranger (obviously the latter won’t apply for those who invite random drunks into their boudoir):drunk:

Damn dude, you got great big, HUGE balls! To take your raincoat off and give it to the dog right in front of your wife (who is getting rain-soaked in silent rage because you were right to begin with). I'm surprised you're alive, let alone capable of getting online and bragging about how right you were.
