2023 Sequoia Capstone


I've had a pickup for the last 10yrs and my TRD Pro is the best truck I've ever owned. I bought it new with no compromises...i searched for and found exactly what i wanted. I'll admit though, this new Sequoia definitely has my attention. First things first...would I miss having a truck? Well, I don't camp, fish or overland (I made a thread about it, actually) but I do use the truck for the typical homeowner type stuff like landscaping, hauling, moving furniture, etc. It's not all the time, but I do use it. That said, I don't NEED a truck. I just like it.

Talk me out of it guys, I'm definitely considering it.

 

Get it, buy a utility trailer and you have the best of both worlds.

Sure, the Sequoia is a nice looking vehicle, but that Tundra, that Tundra......... One nice looking truck!!

 

Coming from a 4Runner and a utility trailer, I very much prefer having a truck with a bed. It’s just so much quicker to toss stuff in the bed. I loathed hooking up my trailer when it was needed. I’m not like the OP though; I use the bed mostly for the kinds of stuff he doesn’t:

• harvested deer
• lumber, building materials for home projects
• mulch
• gear for dispersed camping (including Dometic fridge)
• outdoor range trips
• taking family’s bikes to a trailhead (so much quicker and easier than putting a bike rack on the back of an SUV)
• helping friends haul stuff

And the last perk: I really appreciate getting takeout every once in a while and letting it ride in the bed so it doesn’t stink up the cab.

 

What in the hell are picking up for take out that needs to ride in the bed????

 

What would you use the Sequoia for…any need for third row seating for family? Marginally better gas mileage? Your use case for having a truck for the reasons mentioned above is better served with your truck…Otherwise you’re just switching out a nice vehicle for a nice vehicle. Lots of nice vehicles are available…if I was going to an SUV in place of a truck, for no other reason than a nice vehicle, I’d be buying a Tesla Model Y or X…no gas, no fluids (tranny/diff/radiator etc.), modern interior, better acceleration, etc. or would be looking at a used Lexus LX all before a new Sequoia. Do agree that the new Sequoia looks cool…but wouldn’t give up my Tundra for one

 

Love the sequoia, but they are now at Land Cruiser prices. If I could afford that much I would be in a Land Cruiser.

I check a few of those boxes as well. I don't hunt, but I do get mulch, take the family bikes to the beach and do runs to the landfill to toss away the larger stuff that doesn't get picked up without a special appointment. And I'm TOTALLY with you regarding takeout. Even the smell of french fries will linger in the cab for a day, so pretty much any cooked food that I pick up for the family just goes back in the bed. My truck still smells brand new after 2+ years because of this, so I get it.

I do not like Teslas, so that's out for me. But yes, what I lose in utility I pick up in family versatility, comfort and luxury. That's the big trade off. I have 3 kids (finally everyone is out of car seats). They can sit 3 across in the Tundra with comfort because of the massive rear seat space in the CrewMax, but a 3rd row with captain's chairs in the middle row would be way more comfortable for them, plus it would give me the option to bring my niece along which I don't have in the truck. Secondly, I am enticed by the luxury a little bit... I have a professional office job and wear a suit most days to work and while jumping out of a Tundra doesn't bother me, the whole rugged thing is a bit over the top. My colleagues drive the luxury sedans and SUVs that you'd expect. Again, I don't have to fit in with them, but I'm just saying I don't NEED the truck, I just like it.

 

I prefer anything hot to ride in the bed. Pizza, burgers, Thai, etc… It’s nice to avoid these lingering odors.

Exactly! Mine is pretty much completely odor free. I keep a bag of activated charcoal in it as well for this reason.

New Sequoia looks somewhere between a VW Atlas and a Jeep Wagoneer, just with better headlights…if that doesn’t make you keep the truck

 

Keep it and supercharge it.

 

Get a new Tundra with the hybrid engine, best of both worlds…

 

If I didn't constantly need and use my truck for towing and hauling it would be gone tomorrow. I wouldn't replace it with a Sequoia though that's just me.

 

For just occasional hauling needs you can buy a trailer or even better just rent a UHaul trailer for under $20/day.

 

Coincidentally I did consider (briefly) a Cayenne S Hybrid or maybe a push to a GTS as I think that's the best trim available, but it's just not big enough, and the prices are outrageous. A lightly used GTS is running over $130k. That makes the price of a Sequoia look like a bargain, even though it is high.

If I don't get the Sequoia, I'm staying with my Tundra. There's no other vehicles I'm really shopping right now.

 

Exactly. I was strongly considering the Sequoia until I saw the lack of cargo space behind the third row. If I was to go to a full size SUV it would definitely be the new Jeep Wagoneer.

I'm about 2 years from retirement. I have a paid off 2017 Toyota tundra TRD pro, and a paid off 2020 mustang Bullitt edition.

I've had the new car itch for a while now and have considered the Jeep Gladiator which is too small, the new Tundra which I really don't like, the new Sequoia which has less cargo room, and the new Wagoneer. I also had a wild hair and thought if I traded the mustang and ordered a base 911 I have the tundra and a car of my dreams.

But the wife and I also want a travel trailer. So instead of dropping down another 30 to $50,000 on a vehicle with the same capabilities and I don't need, I'm going to save that cash to buy the travel trailer.

I don't need a truck for daily use but do use it often for movie furniture helping friends home improvement projects etc and I really gotten used to owning a truck.

I drove Jeep Cherokees Grand Cherokees and a commander for almost 30 years before I bought the Tundra. I don't think I'll ever be without a truck until I'm well into my Seventies.

Besides if your TRD pros paid off, you'll need all that extra money for the gas

LOL.... Is my first Mustang and Ford. Has been a great car. Near GT350 performance and power with lots of old man comfort and convenience, and NONE of the scoops, wings, stripes.

 

Beautiful mustang. I’ve owned 2 ‘66 show mustangs and have a soft spot for them.

I had a Grand Cherokee that I miss terribly every time I fill up my Tundra, which is sadly more often than not. Then, whenever I do truck shit, I realize the Jeep couldn't pull it off. Sure, I could go rent a truck from Home Depot or whatever, but as is typical, when I need to do truck stuff, I need it right then, not an hour or so from right then. On another note, way back in the day I worked at a Dodge dealer. Had a guy come trade in a Dakota for some car or another, then "had all kinds of issues" with said car. We figured out he was just mad that the car couldn't do truck stuff and was too stubborn to admit it. I say that to say this...if all you need/want is new hotness daily driver, by all means get the Sequoia, but if the need for that truck stuff comes up...
