I heard a lot of things about cleghorn, I always wanted to try it. I heard parts can be sketchy but not too bad. Does it get super packed on the weekend? I'm getting new tires tomorrow so I'll finally have a decent setup now haha.

Cleghorn is pretty easy but has some interesting offshoots. Becaefull of going solo. It gets pretty busy especially of 30+ tundras show up haha

I can’t speak to how packed; I’ve only been a couple of time and our conga line was the main traffic.

As for sketchy, the main road was a graded, well-maintained fire road, barely any ruts and nothing really off-camber. Cruise through in a 2wd* RAV4. There are off-shoots that go off that main road, and these vary from barely worthy to fairly challenging. The more challenging vary in type of terrain… some are rutted and steep, great opportunities to practice “picking a line”, or working with a spotter… you can test the 4x4 and suspension of your truck, see what you and it can do. There’s at least one that’s all rocks, with high walls on both sides… fun for me, but not many others were willing to try. Still others have a combo of rocks and incline, a bit of off-camber— but not next to a cliff, so it’s a great way to test your level of comfort while you learn… but you may get pinstripes. And some of the off-shoots are very doable in a 2WD as long as you can recognize and follow a line to keep traction on the tires.

It’s been, i think, 3 years since I did it, so an update from someone that’s been there recently would be good. What makes the trail worthwhile is there being options for people and trucks of all levels. Since a lot of our “Shenanigans” meets are, essentially, meet-ups combines with a bit of romping in the dirt with support of others, it’s a best-available in SoCal.

I did all the off shoots solo, let’s just say I was very surprised.

I’m wanting to go down south to play but gas and the lack of a job to pay for that damn gas is holding me back :anonymous:

Most if the group skipped the crazy off-shoots you’d have done. Many could do many of the not-obviously-damaging obstacles without spotting last time, but there’s one main obstacle near the beginning of the trail that we got pretty much everyone to try, and spotting made it possible for all vehicles in our group. But a guy that refused to take the spotters’ line kept placing his tires into ruts which dragged the bottom of his truck, created drag and lessening the traction of his tires— and he couldn’t make it happen doing it his way. That’s ok. Sometimes the driver learns; sometimes the rest of us learn from the driver.

    Not really. Kind of.

There’s a dirt trail with no real challenge just off I-8 at Pine Valley (turn right). And there’s a pretty cool OHV between there and Campo (also on that right side of I-8) that I explored solo and thought looked very promising (off-shoots I did not try solo); I’ve never understood why no one we know goes to it. Other than that, almost everything is gated.

    @eccracer104

There’s a small group of hills in So County, but I checked it out. One off-shoot is super steep hill with poor shale that offers sketchy traction. Another off-shoot had some decent ruts. But it was out and back, so not great for multiple trucks. The other bits were all fire roads— no challenge— and the gates on the dulzura side were all locked, so had to back trial to get out.

The greater SD area has Valley of the Moon and Corral Canyon.

Both should have sliders and skids. Corral canyon does have a very easy outer trail that wraps the park that’s easy and doesn’t need armor, the other trails need it and guaranteed pinstripes.

Looks interesting. Without taking that road I have the info pin on, can you get to that big loop to the south-west? That info pin road is reported as 4 feet wide.

I can’t say. Nothing out there I’ve been on was only 4’ wide.
@eccracer104 can you come in here?

There use to be a big rutted out obstacle off to the side that was worth a half day trip with buddies to test suspension and make dust, but I thought I read from Mike that got cordoned off. Also, the entire areas was closed off during the early official pandemic months. I don’t know anyone that’s been back.

Not so. I tried running that easy outer trail years ago, scouting for a Shenanigans run in A’s 4Runner. Going counter clockwise, about 10:00 I met a bit of trail that erosion had bared a large exposed rock that jutted up and was most of the width of a narrow trail with a tree on one side. No way to approach except straight on and woulda had to hope to slide over. No skids on that truck, so after scouting, and realizing the buddy I was with couldn’t see the line I was willing to try with a spotter, I decided to back out.
Then that gutless wonder, 240K stock suspension and street tires aired down— with a locker — couldn’t back up the bit of sand-covered hardback. Luckily, I’d brought the MaxTrax… which I used for the 2nd (so far) time; that’s where they got chewed up.

Anyway… I decided not to lead a group of unprotected Tundras on that outer ring road.

Edit: I later figured out I was describing a different trail than what Mike was. Kept the post up because the general info may be helpful to someone in a future search.

Oh dang! I didn’t know the outer loop was blocked. Maybe you ended up on a trail?

The OHV area, Corral Canyon, has several very tough trails, and a few really tough trails. Oh and two of the most difficult trails in socal. Lol.

I’m not sure why we don’t go there more often other than it being overlooked. I’ve done a few trails there in my Tacoma, but haven’t been yet in the Tundra.

As for trails being 4’ wide - unknown. I know Pine Valley you can go pretty far in a truck (but the obstacles did get fenced off).

I checked maself after I wrecked maself: doh! I remember, the outer trail inside the OHV is easy, fun, banked corners— you’re right :)

The trail I was describing is in the same area… past the military training facility and the fire watchtower. But not inside the OHV area.

If I’m free the day you’d go, I’d go; based on Mike’s descriptions of the side shoots as hard and very hard, I’d say we’d need a group of 3-4 trucks, sliders and skids. Also I think it’s too hot now, at least for advanced planning…. Maybe a possibility of a last minute trip if we get a patch of cool days. I wouldn’t camp though— it’s about an hour from home, for me. Too difficult to get free last minute for a night away. But I understand Lake Morena is nice to camp.
