Hypothetical situation here... What would you do?!

You already sold your old Tundra, and you're down to a one car family, which is the further from an ideal situation.

You're a week away from signing for a Tundra Limited at MSRP (because your dealership doesn't suck), but you have a lead on another dealership (who also doesn't charge above MSRP) that currently has nobody on the waiting list for a TRD Pro. They advise that for $500 deposit they'll put you down, but you're realistically looking at a 4-6+ month wait, depending on if they get one allocated sooner rather than later.

Do you go ahead and buy the Limited, hoping that the used car values in 4-6 months is still red hot and you wont lose your ass on trade?

Or

Do you not buy the Limited and just hope that the Pro comes in sooner, which will make the foreseeable future extremely stressful and difficult for your family to maneuver daily life?

 

thats a bad call asking as this is a situation only you and your spouse can resolve. any bad judgement on your end and you two will have to endure the fall out from it.

and if you follow someone else's advice or this forum, ultimately you two will have to endure the fall out.

 

Don't rely on any timeframe that a dealer gives you.

 

in my situation, i wouldnt have sold my old vehicle until the new one was on hand, but thats just me. i can wait months until what i exactly want comes in.

 

and on any dealer to not sell it out from under you cause someone threw money at a dealer paying more than msrp.

If your 1 car situation is bad enough (and knowing you can’t take a dealership at their word) I would get the limited.

However…if you feel buyer’s remorse may be a thing if you buy the limited then you should probably look into something like a longer term rental or such to alleviate your 1 car situation and wait it out.

 

Like others have said, it's what you and the wife can handle. I would say though, if you really want one more than the other, go with that one. Otherwise, every time you get in that truck or see the one that you really wanted and didn't get, you'll have constant regret.

 

I'd take a good hard look at what EXACTLY a Pro gives me that a Limited doesn't... there's some graphics, color choices, exclusivity and then a bunch of things I'd end up swapping out (lift, skid plates, etc).

My brother-in-law has a 2.5 Pro and says if he had it to do over, he'd have gotten a Limited and then dial in mods. YMMV.

 

I think you're forgetting the TRD Pro has the hybrid motor as standard equipment where as the limited doesn't

 

a deposit means absolutely nothing in terms of a guarantee unless:

* you have a signed sellers/purchase agreement with the dealer
* a temp vin (which means they have the allocation) and the temp vin is specifically called out in the documented and signed agreement
* a deposit

if you don't have these things then you're just a name on a list and there's no guarantee. if this is the case for the pro, i wouldn't make decisions without the binding documentation. they can skip you on the wait list or sell to someone else as mentioned already.

 

The Pro may never materialize. You will be able to sit in the limited in a week. Don't forget, these are promises made by car salesmen (think there's an active thread on lies being told by car salesmen around here somewhere).

 

If the situation of having one family car is as stressful as it sounds from your initial post, I would stick with the limited. There is no guarantee that the pro will arrive, much less in the timeframe given. I would get the sure thing, reduce the stress on the family and mod the limited as you see fit in the future.

Take limited Hybrid with TRD off-road premium and mod the suspension with the leftover $$$.

If it was me I would buy the Limited now and put a deposit (if refundable) on the Pro. If circumstances are looking good when the Pro comes available, figure out if you wanna do the swap.

If the market is still squeezed you could buy the Pro and flip it for some monies to help mod the limited, or flip the Limited for cost or cost+, depending on which model you like more at the time.

If you decide the Limited is good enough and you don't want/need the Pro, then either cancel the order and get the deposit back, or try and sell your place in line to a buddy or another forum member.

 

Assuming you WANT the Pro more(which sounds like you hypothetically do) I would wait for it. a 6 month wait is really not that long if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time, plus you get what you want, AND they may have more time to fix the quality issues.

You can buy a dirt cheap beater car that some high school kid is sick of to drive for a few months.

I bought a little 2010 Ford Ranger at the end of December, privately sold my 2012 SR5 DC TRD 4x4 in January (for a ridiculous amount of $$$), went on a waiting list in February for a build date of April (which actually happened) and picked up the '22 SR5 DC 4x4 on May 5th. Sold the Ranger a week later within 30 minutes of posting on CraigsFlakes and even made a substantial profit on that. Glad I sold the 2012 when I did.

 

So for what its worth.. i had a 2020 Tacoma Trd pro and if i did it again id have just gotten a sr5 and added all my mods.. all the things that made that truck a pro i replaced except for the interior. So this time i got a 2022 tundra SR5 4x4 with the XP package to rid of any and all chrome besides the piece in the head lights and ill mod from here... Unless you plan on keeping it stock id just get the limited save the cash you'd spend on the PRO and put it into the limited... and honestly a SR5 is gonna be just as if not more capable than a pro with a little money put into it... just my .02$ Also the limited has most of the bells and whistles anyways so Ur really not losing much to be honest. Unless you have to have the hybrid but honestly the non hybrid feels Awesome plenty of power and never worry about swapping out the battery cell one day with the hybrid.

 

It is an option for Limited, but it is standard on the pro. The problem right now is, Toyota is prioritizing their hybrids for the Capstone and TRD Pro. I think finding a TRD Pro is easier than a limited with a hybrid motor. I did a search of limiteds with a hybrid motor and can't find any, anywhere.

 

At msrp.

 

I'd say get the limited and then build it up BETTER than a Pro for less $$

 

No kidding, I think this may be the norm for the TRD Pro and Capstone for awhile.
This was on a Capstone at my dealer..

 

I say wait for the Pro and purchase a temp vehicle to daily in the meantime.
