Hi, I’m totally new to 4x4 vehicles so this is probably going to be a dumb question… I have a 2020 Tundra and sometimes have to pull up a 6 or so inch curb to park on the grass when our parking lot is full at work. I’ve been using 4H and slowly back straight up it. When I left work today, I pulled straight down the curb and switched it back to 2H. The 4H light flashed but didn’t turn off until I put it into park. I waited 30 or so seconds. Didn’t make any unusual noises and the truck drove without any issues on the way home. Anyone know if this is normal? Thanks

Normal operations, it’s back to 2WD if the 4H light isn’t showing on the dashboard.

Think your truck was trying to tell you to get out of the truck and take a picture of it going down that steep ledge.

Thanks for the replies! The 4H light turned off without having to switch it into Park when I tested it today. Maybe just a 1 time thing.

I go over tons of curbs and park in grass without 4x4.
That being said I’ve noticed sometimes the truck may need to move forward a little to disengage or engage 4h

If your wheels are turned slightly it might not disengage rapidly. Generally, you wanna be moving straight ahead or in reverse when engaging/disengaging.

Any time there is any real torque on the front drivetrain, it will hold in 4hi until there is no longer torque on the front drivetrain. Driving straight ahead or reversing in a straight line, or mild acceleration / deceleration is how the torque or “binding” that’s fighting the rear drivetrain is reduced, and it should be able to shift to 2wd at that point.

I usually find it disengages easily when there is no load or strain on any part of the drivetrain, but there is motion. So coasting or at least letting off the throttle while going straight. I also feel like over time it engaged /disengaged more easily / quickly.

That makes a lot of sense. I’ll make sure it’s totally straight and try to drive it a bit more next time I use 4wd. Might just try it in 2H to see if 4wd is needed when I park there too. Thanks again for the feedback!
