Anyone know how the TSS radar ACTUALLY works?

Long story short - Replaced Limited grille with OEM TRD Pro grille. Front radar was plugged in, but would not work (light on in dash).

When I swapped over to the new grille everything worked for about 3 days, but after that the light came on, and stayed on. The ONLY thing that we cheaped out on was the TSS garnish by going aftermarket as I figure it's just a piece of plastic and the OEM one was like $320 at the time.

Fast forward to current day - All of a sudden the radar light has gone out which would indicate to me that everything is working properly.

    1. Is there some calibration needed after switching to a new grille due to location, angle, etc?
    2. Is this thing actually working? Anyone have any good ways to test it aside from the highway radar-controlled speed?

Sometimes the cheap ones are too thick. I decided to just go without a varnish since it’s pretty obvious it’s not part of the grill anyway.

If you’re married you can have your wife stand in the street and roll at her at about 20mph. Make sure she has life insurance

Edit for legal purposes - the above is a joke

So I'll end up swapping out how it "looks", but I just gotta make sure it works first! So the plastic is just plastic then? Yours works A-OK without a garnish at all?

Yes there is calibration for the TSS system. So it you changed the unit, moved it, it may need to be calibrated. Toyota can do this for you, probably 200-300 bucks I would guess. I do not know if the calibration is something DIY. The TSS system is set up for some rake, so it you have lifted or leveled that could be a contributor. Check post 14 here about DIY adjustment if your truck does not have enough rake.

And as far as it working, if your adaptive cruise control is working, the TSS system is working.

Some folks have reported issues after lifting their truck (changing the height and angle of the sensor) which can be adjust via techstream calibration.

The emblem needs to be made of a specific material to allow the radar to penetrate without distortion/interference. The specific TSS emblem is more expensive for this reason. @2020Platinum relocated his sensor without any issues.

A system diagnostic would tell you what isn't functioning properly Here is an example (on a Taco) of the procedure:
