Tools you carry

Hey there,

trying to put together a toolbox for my truck and just wanted to see what others are packing. Historically I carried most of my tools but just want to get an idea of what a good bare minimum would be. Thanks!

 

All I carry is a 2ft long breaker bar w/21mm socket for a tire change. I mean, it's a Toyota, right?

 

Its a Toyota so you dont really NEED anything, but since I offroad, its best to be safe.

I carry a basic mechanics socket and screwdriver set, 2 small blocks of wood for using with my hi lift or to bang something back in place or loose, hammer, 2 ratchet straps, a small box of fuses, zip ties, a few feet of fuel line and a tube of JB Weld in case I puncture my gas tank on the trail.

Duct tape, zip ties, and a screw driver in case I need to take off the license plate and walk away.

 

I keep a dewalt tire inflator in my truck as well as a plug kit. If im going on a long trip I keep a 1/2" socket set and my 1/2" impact in case of a flat or blowout.

Each big tool brand has their own tire inflator, I also have a makita one and it is much smaller.

I just bought this last week and love it. Set the PSI and press play and it will auto stop at desired PSI with .5 accuracy

 

Tire inflator, breaker bar, factory jack, battery booster pack.

In the winter, I carry some recovery straps and recovery boards.

 

Would this set if you apply it to a busted tank actively streaming gas?

 

4-way tire tool, various wooden blocks, 1 gallon of antifreeze, 1 gallon of water, 1- 6 ton bottle jack, 1- 2 ton off road jack, machete, jumper cables, 2 jack stands, 2 wheel chocks, recovery strap, folding spade, roll of heavy duty trash bags, a full set of 1/2 and 3/8 sockets, and assorted bungee cords & ratchet straps.

Is that for measuring how far you get before you need to get gas again?

I carry a full set of 3/8 sockets in metric and standard with wrenches. Dewalt 1/2” impact with sockets, axle nut socket, headlamps, extra valve stems. Factory bottle Jack, jumper cables, hammer or mallet, zip ties, bungees, tire plug kit. The rest of this list goes more into recovery but also maxtrax boards, full size spare, snatch strap, tow strap, shackles, hatchet and machete.

When I write it all out it sounds like overkill, and perhaps for the Tundra it might be, but I’ve used any of these tools at one time or another helping someone else on the trail or the side of the road. If I’m not in a rush to go somewhere, I will usually pull over and assist someone that’s having car troubles on the side of the road. So I like to be prepared for myself and for those with me.

 

A self drilling screw with a rubber washer will hold for weeks, if it’s a small hole.

 

Speak softly and carry a big tool.

innards from a broken ratchet, crack everything loose, then use hand muscles to twist everything apart. Keeps you from over tightening when going back together. This one has a hole I can stick a small screwdriver for a little extra leverage.

 

I think for me it's just a matter of being stuck on the side of the road broke down needing stuff. I was a life long Ford guy before the Tundra Era

I used to carry spare parts too: alternator, starter, belts, solenoids, battery, assorted nuts, bolts, screws, hoses....

 

Used self tappers for the ol roadside radiator fix

 

I’ve been meaning to carry more spare parts for mine. Particularly CV axles, driveline, UCA’s as those can really leave you stranded. But that’s because I wheel the hell out of it and want to be prepared for the inevitable. Other stuff like a fuel pump or alternator it’s hard to say when they will give up the ghost.

 

Well, all those spare parts were for the Fords I drove lol to be fair, my fords were mid-70s model F150s and F250s

 

I have the waterweld variety but you could use the regular one, you would just have to stop the leak somehow first, or jack up the side of the truck enough to stop the leak.

 

For tools, I don't carry a huge amount. On a new truck these days there's a limited amount I'm going to be able to fix on the roadside.

Maybe a few other odds and ends that I can't remember. I also have a pretty decent trauma kit, a survival kit, an ultralight fishing rod and organizer box with lures, water, shit tickets, hand sanitizer, blanket, spare hoodie, and there's a pair of rubber boots and recovery boards in the bed. I'll probably have to add a few things as I now have a baby girl to take care of, probably spare diapers, ass cream wipes etc.

 

I’ve used a cheap plug kit on a sport bike to get myself home. And a small box of wax, instead of superglue, shaving wax out of a plastic works as a decent med temp seal. You can’t cook it, but a crayon is more helpful than just making pretty pictures.

I ordered one of these cheap sets from Amazon. Seems to have most things I would need if I were Macgyver.

 

An interesting question, I can confirm from youthful ignorance that tub & tile caulk does not.

 

I am not likely to attempt to do much work on a modern vehicle even with a garage full of tools. To that end, I carry a AAA Plus card. I do however like to be prepared. I have a tire repair kit and 12 volt inflator, a conventional bottle jack that I can easily get at, under the rear seat, and a large four way lug wrench. Also jumper cables, and a few other trinkets that aren't tools.

 

I carry a Matt's Off Road Recovery gift card. JK. It's a long way from Hurricane, UT to my stomping grounds.
