I was doing that because I watched Sesame Street and figured it out. My parents never taught me shit other than how not to parent.

And everyone thinks they’re part of the 5%.

I always think of it mathematically. Nearly half of all people have below average intelligence.

3-2-1 Contact for Science lessons and Mr Rogers for how to not be a POS. We only had 5 TV stations and PBS was one of them.

We sure could use Mr Rogers right now.

Yeah you don't want to come here or like myself you may not be able to leave. Only N.Korea, China and Canada are keeping citizens from leaving their country.

I think it is a little more complicated than that. My opinion is that most consider themselves educated and therefore by default part of that 5%.

Intelligence IMO is different. It's the creation of mixing critical thinking, problem solving skills, wisdom, and knowledge.

But knowledge to me is the least important. Knowing how to get an answer or break down a problem to solve it is far more important than trying to store all the answers in your head.

The last and most difficult step for society today I think is to allow your opinion to change with the facts when trying to solve a problem instead of trying to change the facts to fit your beliefs.

Nailed it but the hardest part is learning resourcefulness. If it even can be learned. Some people just have a natural zest for seeking knowledge out.

The biggest hurdle we have in society today is dialogue and the breakdown of it. Wanna know why everything ends up in a fight? People need to stop going into difficult conversations with the intent of changing the other person's mind.

The affects of this seemed to show a more than a coordinated effort in the end results... Yes this was done in Vegas!!! We had lenders doing loans, 2nds, and 3rds at over 100% of already inflated fair market values of the homes. They would lend to anyone w/almost any level of debt or other obligation and were doing it almost without confirming stated income (tips, bonuses, side gigs, etc. that are typical for the area) Neighborhoods were built in what seemed like a week just to keep up.

The bottom quickly fell out of the market and people couldn't keep up w/their payments (since they were no longer able to borrow money to pay what they already couldn't afford). This resulted in a mass level of foreclosures and short sales. $250k homes were now selling at $60k short sale (no one could legitimately sell in median neighborhoods for years). Then a bunch of outsiders (Californians and Foreigners) purchased the foreclosed properties in masses. These new owners then turned many of these homes into gov't approved properties (section 8), and within a couple of years, homes that were once sitting in very nice $250-$500k middle-class, gated communities with safe neighborhoods ended up being smack in the middle of the ghetto.

Interesting how many of these properties ended up producing huge income for the gov't and foreign investors and did nothing for the neighborhood! Also, happened in Phx, Albq, and a few other major metro areas... The lenders took the blame (at least in our area). However, the results seem a little too orchestrated to simply be an isolated industry (lending) failure or mistake...

Maybe orchestrated, but by those positioned to make money, who devised a new opportunity for immediate profit without regard for long-term consequences.

Example: REIT’s are the latest investment that will have horrendous fall-out. Yes, during the pandemic, those with means that could work remotely, bought second homes far from city centers… and that affected availability and drove up costs in less urban areas.

But a far greater impact is REIT’s that have million$ ready to go, and use algorithms to analyze new listings as soon as they hit the market— then make cash offers that can close within a day. Edging out all offers by individuals. This has already killed home buying for individual buyers, especially first time buyers, in many areas. Large areas of properties controlled by REIT’s (focused on investor returns; therefore shaving costs everywhere)… drive up rental prices + poor property management. Over time, people get trapped by high rents eating into their savings for down payments, can’t easily move within the same geographic area… where their jobs and kids’ schools and social support are located (because the housing costs have soared due to same), can’t get basic maintenance done— here comes more urban blight.

I hope y’all are ready to buy your kids’ first home (like our depression-raised grandparents did for their kids)… ‘cause non-legacy home ownership will soon be a thing of the past for most.

... and we have another "report" by the very people who are a large part of the problem; telling everyone that they need to have more oversight and control over things that fund their own existence through lobbying and donations. It's one big circle jerk!!!!

Yeah probably not because of public school. My kindergartener is better at sounding out words he doesn’t know than my 3rd grader. This is because he went through K at a private school where they teach reading through the proven Logic of English program, whereas my 3rd grader went though 2 years of public school that didn't teach him much until we switched. We’re reviewing LoE materials with our older kids because it is so good.

Don't be so quick to diss public education. There are good and bad on both the public school and home school sides. I've seen kids come back from being "home schooled" who are 2 grade levels behind.

I’ve seen exactly the same thing. I’ve also never touted homeschooling.

Check out the link from my post you quoted. Overall, American public schooling has our kids lagging behind in reading. Math, too, for that matter. There are some districts that consistently turn out competent, well rounded graduates. And I am well aware that some kids only get a decent meal at public school. That is heart wrenching. And sadly, the schools that perform well academically are fewer and further between than they should be.

I wish. Would a critical thinker buy a truck whose transmission reaches 600°C just by unlocking the doors with the fob?

I have zero doubt that a proper home school program can trump many of the public schools out there. Simple analogy: take anything mass produced and make it again by someone who is an artisan in that field. No competition when it comes to the quality. The artisan has more time to devote to one piece than a machine that is designed to mass produce hundreds at a fraction of the time.

Doesn't mean school teachers are trash. Some are but many I've worked with are not. The education system is designed to churn and burn.

Sooooo..... What was done punitively to the main players in this fiasco???

Let's see, we have Freddie and Fannie, Sachs, BofA, Chase, etc... all MAJOR players in this mess. The well-being of countless families were destroyed, seemed like damn near 1/4 of the country went bankrupt, the amount of folks that lost homes and suffered financial ruin is probably not measurable.

The big players who perpetuated and drove the housing and financial markets to its breaking point, however, experience 'punishment' in the form of a gov't (tax payer funded) bailout?? The bailout was done in order to "save everyone" from the horrors of what was perpetrated by the controlling entities and big finance powerhouses. Last I checked, Fannie and Freddie still control a vast majority of the real estate game; B of A, Chase, Sachs, etc. are all still financial powerhouses; and I don't recall seeing anyone end up in prison or any of these institutions being brought down; they just became stronger. If you or I as individuals would have done something like this, at least on a level that we could afford to, it would have resulted in us being investigated and ultimately prosecuted for criminal offenses.

I struggle w/the fact that a lot of people fail to see that our gov't is a non-profit entity (or at least it should be), and every dime they spend comes from the taxpayers (us)... So, when we "bail out" poor decisions by big business it costs the tax payers not the gov't; when we send $40 billion to help Ukraine, that's not our gov't chipping away at its own retirement account, that's again taxpayer money going to support another nation, while we still have domestic issues that continue to remain unresolved. Hell, everyone was giving Musk a hard time for buying Twitter instead of "fixing world hunger", yet we just sent a similar amount of money to support a tiny blip on the world map when apparently we could have helped millions/billions of hungry people/children...

I wasn't objecting to your post or saying that you were sitting on the wrong side of the fence. I was simply acknowledging that once again we end up w/months of investigation, 100's of pages of reports, and in the end we (taxpayers) gave a shit ton of money to big banking institutions to allow them to remain big banking institutions; and all of this was driven by the gov't. The reciprocation of the gov't funneling money and rescuing them is and has been financial support, lobbying, etc. by the money holders toward politicians that supported their bailout(s). Which takes us back to my original statement that it's all one big circle jerk (at our expense)!!!
