Could that be the starter solenoid slamming the gear back into place as the engine begins to run? It occurs almost immediately after startup.

Probably something like that, something in the valve body maybe. Who knows, now that so much is aluminum every little sound is a lot more noticeable now. I know my f150's trans makes some clunks like that sometimes but not specifically on startup.

Yup. That's definitely the noise that I hear. It's so sporadic that I eventually stopped trying to capture it on video.

It always seems to happen to me when the engine is "warm" but not "hot." I.E. Like after it's been sitting for 30-45mins or more. Never happens on when the engine is still at operating temp. Never happens when the engine restarts during an auto start/stop cycle. Never seems to happen when the engine is totally cold.

I'm almost to 13,000 miles now and haven't run into any adverse effects from it nor has it gotten louder or more frequent. I first noticed it probably a month or so into ownership at around 2,000 miles. For context, I took delivery of my truck on 12/15/21 so I've had my truck for over 6 months now. Dealership can never replicate the sound so they just tell me to keep an eye on it. :notsure:

Has anyone been able to diagnose this with Toyota? Mine is doing it almost every morning when I first start it and I'm only at 3k miles.
I don't want to assume it's bad but it sounds terrible, and kind of embarrasing coming from a brand new truck.

I haven't taken it in yet, but plan on addressing it at my 5K service (currently at 2.5K). I agree though, it sounds TERRIBLE!!

I'm close to my 15k mile service. I'm probably 2 weeks out. I plan on showing my dealership the video from the thread (since I've never been able to capture it on video) and see if they'll investigate further. I've mentioned it at 5k & 10k and they always just brush it off since they can't replicate it. We'll see what happens.

Edit: I usually don't care about it, since it's been happening for so long, but someone asked if my truck was "ok" the other day because they heard it.

I just dropped off my Tundra at the dealership and they weren’t able to replicate the noise but I did show them a recording of it. They said that as far as they know it wasn’t normal. They’re gonna contact some higher ups at Toyota and see what they say. I’ll keep y’all guys updated.

I just went back and watched other videos (I have captured 3 so far) and have noticed that in 2/3 you can also hear the truck starting with very low RPMs (maybe a coincidence, or may help the pros diagnosis a potential issue). I will work on getting them all uploaded onto one post so everyone can hear the 3 side by side.

I finally took my truck to the dealer and had them diagnose the sound. They couldn’t replicate it in shop, but watched a few of the videos. They seemed damn confident that the noise was apart of the “self-check” function that the computer runs on the engine and turbos. They also said it doesn’t occur during every start-up because the computer stores the function check data and won’t run it again until the truck completes a full drive cycle.

Curious what everyone’s thoughts are on this and if @nef got any similar feedback from their dealer.

I'm not sure I follow their logic when they say, "...won’t run it again until the truck completes a full drive cycle." If that was true, then I would think it should make the noise pretty consistently on cold start up or some similar situation. The noise is very inconsistent, at least in my experience.

I have my 15k mile service scheduled for Thursday the 16th. I'll see if I can get my dealership to look into it further. It's been documented on my paperwork at my 5k & 10k service so they'll know this problem (assuming it is one) has continued.

The truck does a self-check off the wastegate at start up pretty much every time. If you’re outside the truck you can hear it and you can see the wastegate actuator move. But that sound is different than the sound I heard in the posted videos. To me, it sounds like the start solenoid returning to home position. Others said this too.

Indeed. I might be a wastegate valve. Which, if true, makes it slightly more concerning since that makes you wonder if it's indicative to the bigger waste issue. I keep thinking I'm clear of that possible issue since I have so many miles on my truck, but a guy posted on FB that his truck had the wastegate failure at 20k miles.

I've squatted next to the truck and started it with the remote fob. When I do manage to catch the sound...it's definitely mechanical in nature. I hear it more prominent on the passenger side. Like a valve slapping shut. This is the best way I can describe it based off my experience: Think of holding open a throttle body gate valve with your finger and then letting it slap shut when you release your finger. It sounds like that versus the "click" or "tick" of a solenoid.

I have all 3 of these issues. I'm at just over 2k miles and have had all 3 since day 1. The clunk noise happens about every 6th to 8th start up or so, regardless of whether the engine is cold or warm. The trans lag happens every single time with a cold start departure. I also tried warming up the motor a little and realized as well that it does not occur in that case. I did also noticed that if I accelerate extremely gently at a cold start departure, it seems to not happen. The wind noise is beyond my comprehension. How could Toyota have let this one get past them? It's pretty ridiculous. I'm a lifetime motorcycle rider and it sounds like I'm out on one of my bikes for a ride! They NEED to remedy this, asap.

Might be. You can see the wastegate actuator if you look in the wheel well. It’s just above the upper control arm and slightly towards the rear of the car. To me it sounds like a squeak and moves fairly slowly, maybe 2-3 seconds to sweep one way then the other.

    Update from Today:

Took my truck in for the 15k mile service. Mentioned the sound again and showed some of videos of the sound. They had the Master Tech retrieve the vehicle from the holding lot this time instead of a porter and he heard the sound at startup. They had 2 Master Techs look at it just to confirm and both agreed that the sound is coming from the Air Injection Pump. The air injection pump is right inside the passenger fender, basically at the exhaust header.

The techs both said that the air injection pump is louder on the 3rd Gen Tundras than previous Gens, but they had seen this fairly consistently on just about every 3rd Gen Tundra they've serviced up to this point. Everything is normal, according to them.

Waiting for what results? He said in his post that all the tech's acknowledged the noise, said it was coming from the air injection pump and was normal across the board. Am I missing something?

Update: the guys at Toyota are completely useless. They’ve had my truck for around a while now and they can’t figure out what it is. Sorry to disappoint y’all but I’m not keeping the truck unless they figure it out. I’m gonna start looking for other trucks at this point. Might have to go with a 2021

This got brought up again on another thread. Any updates from your dealer keeping your truck so long?

Yep, exactly the same sound with my truck. I’m now at 1300 miles but have heard this since new (as I recall). That said, I’ve not heard it during auto start-up sequence at a light (for e.g.).

One observation I'll throw out there:

I'm surprised how this issue seemingly only impacts certain trucks. Judging by the forum activity here, I have to assume it's a fair amount of trucks but certainly not all trucks. If it was "normal", then I'd have to assume it should all trucks equally...which I don't believe it is. Otherwise, there would be hundreds discussing it rather than dozens of us.

All I know is that over the course of 15k miles, it continues to happen intermittently. It hasn't gotten any louder or more frequent. From what I can tell there has yet to be any negative impact from it. However, I have trouble believing that the engineers at Toyota have heard this noise and said, "Yeah...that occasional clunk is totally acceptable and normal."

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am thinking maybe its related to oil drainback and the top end of the motor taking a couple of seconds to get oil. The VCT solenoids and stuff are probably oil driven and so if it sits for an extended period the oil could "leak down" and so it needs to be primed.

But since the wastegate actuators are electric than I suppose they could be closing at any point(engine on or off since vacuum isnt needed) and I also could imagine the high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection could make some noise. Its possible its closing the return to help build pressure during cranking.

my only theory for the lack of more people discussing it is that most aren't "car savvy" enough to be aware of or care of the possible issue, most people starts the car while inside the car with the door closed which can minimize the fact that they can even hear the clunk at all

I can tell you that the Ecoboost engines make all sorts of odd noises that 20 years ago would probably cause a lot of alarm. They click and clack and whistle and hum at startup. Its the high pressure fuel pump, the cam phasers, and they run the wastegates closed with the blow off valve open during startup to help warm up the exhaust, etc. The BOV/Wastegate thing makes the turbos spool up and it makes a loud wooshing sounds as it recirculates into the intake.

I imagine the Tundra makes a lot of similar sounds due to the engines being pretty close in nature.

Coming from the dinosaur 5.7L I was a bit shocked at first at all the different noises the new truck makes at start up and shut down! This totally makes sense to me. Until someone actually has some failure linked to this particular noise I don't see anything happening on Toyota's end. I love the new truck but it is kinda nice jumping in the wife's Sequoia once a week or so and enjoying the simplicity and great sound of the 5.7!

My prior 2019 Ram 1500 made a similar noise. Ended up diagnosing it as the drivetrain surging slightly on startup. Put a camera under the truck watching the driveshaft on startup and the shaft would twitch/slam - confirmed via video.

At least on the Ram, you could prevent this by not pressing the brake as hard when starting the truck. Press the brake pedal too hard, and you get the driveshaft movement while in park on startup which was the source of the noise.

Put a camera under the truck and record a started and see if the driveshaft is moving.

Just purchased my 2022 Tundra about a month ago and here I am investigating an issue that you guys have been discussing since the beginning of the year. Yep, I have the very same issues!
