Is It Worth to Buy a Toyota Tundra With Around 200k Miles?

I bought my 5.7L 2007 08/27/2017 when it already had 270,000 miles on it...

Who else has purchased a high mileage Tundra?
What has the experience been like for you?

It depends on the price and how you want to use it.
If I was only looking for something to make Home Depot runs every other weekend, I would do it.
But, I put about 30,000 miles a year on my truck, so it would not be a good decision for me considering my usage.

These trucks can easily handle 200k or 300k miles, so for limited usage and the right price there is nothing wrong with buying a high mileage Tundra (any Toyota for that matter) after a good inspection.

 

My co-worker has 300k on his Tundra. I know it was meticulously maintained (The company pays for maintenance since we use them for work so we make use of the company card )

I would buy this truck any time if I wanted something for limited use.

 

Why restrict it to limited use?

 

Just because I put so many miles on my truck; buying something with already high miles, I will be at 400k or 500k within a few years of owning it, and that starts to get up there.
Buying it at 200k and having 250k on it 5 years later sounds like a more feasible option to me.

 

If I knew the history or had maintenance records I would have no concerns buying a 200K mile Tundra. That being said, I would expect to spend $3-4K overhauling it with new suspension and other things that may not have been replaced. I rarely see these trucks have engine failure. Most of the repairs you see people do in the 1st gen section are due to age or neglect.

Honestly, if regular maintenance is performed 200K doesn't scare me like it used to.

 

I would buy one with high miles on it but they are normally pretty old and in NY they are rusted to shit.

Out of state truck that has been maintained I would buy in a minute

 

I assumed the risk of buying mine with zero maintenance records... my risk has been rewarded thus far.

 

I'd love to see a Blackstone Labs oil analysis from a real high mileage Tundra. I sent one in around 150K and it looked great. I've seen one at 200K that also looked great with no metal content that would indicate issues. Someone with 300K+ should do this and report back.

 

I’ve been thinking about sending in a sample from my 99 Tacoma with 245k.

Hey all! I’m going to look at a 2016 SR5 4x2 Double Cab next week with 195k (private party, one owner). The owner drove 1k miles a week between 12 NAPA stores and kept up with all of the routine maintenance. He did not tow with it.

Is there anything to look out for at the 200k mark? This would be my first Tundra. I’ve been searching the forum for themes/problem areas, but would greatly appreciate your insight as well.

I ran a 97 Avalon over 250k before I sold it several years ago with no major issues. And since I won’t drive this Tundra more than 1500 miles a year, I’d like to get a newer year with high miles as long as it was maintained well.

Want to make sure I’m not walking into a high risk purchase. I usually purchase around the 125k mark, so I am trying to go into this with my eyes wide open.

 

If it passes a thorough inspection and the extended test drive with the radio off doesn't reveal any issues, it should be a great used truck... 1500 miles per year going forward will pretty much ensure you will have few if any problems.

 

My husband bought his 2003 RCLB with 120k miles on it back in ‘08. Hes over 300k now with half of that towing, no issues and just normal maintenance. It had meticulous maintenance records so thats usually a good selling point.

 

I bought mine at 180k. Thorough look over of everything. Press every single button and switch and knob and handle on the whole vehicle. Make sure 4wd and low range operate correctly. Floor it and take that bitch to redline and make sure everything is good. If everything sounds and looks good then I'd get it.

Just passed 240k, had it 3 years. Supercharged it at 214k. The only problem I've had (that wasn't from my own stupidity) was starter went out at 215k.

How much would you pay for a 2015 Tundra TRD 4 door gray with 200k miles? 3 owners. Looks well maintained clean interior. Texas/southwest truck. I negotiated down to 16-19k seller wanted 24k originally. Carfax looks clean no accidents. Last major maintenance record was at 100k with belt replacement and brake/rotor work.

 

I LOVE Tundras but it's still a used truck with 200k miles for $20k. You could buy a $10k truck from any other manufacturer and put a brand new engine/ trans combo in it with a warranty for another $10k. If you really want to have something that will last get a $5k truck. As long as it has no rust you could replace EVERYTHING for $15k and drive a brand new truck for $20k. Heck if your throwing 20 at a vehicle why not just put that down on something that's 25-30 and not worry about pretty much anything. What's your car payment going to be $100 per month? Again I love Tundras and want to run mine for 1,000,000 miles but these trucks are like the current real estate market, outrageous.

 

I'm probably going to sell my truck early next year. getting the 2022.
Original owner of this 2008 Crewmax Limited with 170k miles. I have a 15 mile commute round trip. Well maintained with all records.
replaced the starter a few years back. probably because of the short commute and lots of starting vs miles. has Bistine 6100's, new tires and rims from a 2020 Sequoia, TRD sway bars front and back, Airlift w/ onboard compressor. TRD Sequoia grill and headlights. Clear half bra including headlights. AppleCar Play Alpine, 13" sub, Amps and all speakers replaced. Tinted window with ceramic including windshield. Fiberglass tonneau cover, BedRug bed liner, The truck needs nothing.
The only negative thing about the truck is I've always towed an 8k trailer 5-6 times a year locally. 240 mile round trip.
I'm trying to figure out what is a reasonable price to expect.

 

I got my 2015 last year for under 20K with 40K miles on it.
Way under 20K!
Sure mine is a Long Bed Regular Cab which would be a no-go for many but was exactly what I was looking for too.
YMMV clearly.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a high mileage tundra if it had clean service history and records (if I wasn't putting many miles on it), but there's no way in hell I would pay what the secondary market asks for one. I'm happy as a seller to take advantage of the absurd resale value on a Tundra (or Tacoma, as I've done previously), but as a buyer I would never drop 20k for a high mileage vehicle.

I only have around 120K on my 2017 tundra and bought it with 93K. It had a listing of every service done to it since new. Dealer had mine and another one of the same year for $5000 more than I paid. I guess because mine had 93K that saved me some money. Who knows...

I hope to get 250,000 or more out of the truck.

 

Hey I’m interested in buying a high mileage tundra. It’s a 2017 4.7 L tundra w 4WD.
Has about 155k miles and it’s going around 24k. Has had only 1 owner and hasn’t been in any accidents. Don’t know much about vehicle history such as maintenance. Looks well kept in photos. Would this be a good deal? Looking for some advice.

 

Good deal? Have you booked it out on NADA or KBB. Or compared to others in area? It seems great for the year but with the mileage factor.

How much do you plan to drive yearly? 10-15k or 25-30k? How you plan to drive it should factor in.

 

It isn't the mileage that you need to worry about. It depends on how the vehicle was used. Long highway trips cause the least wear and tear on a vehicle. City driving, rush hour traffic, frequent short trips, starting and stopping the engine several times a day, are all FAR worse for the vehicle than just driving many miles.

That's how people get to 1M miles. It isn't by taking 8 short trips to the drug store on a daily basis. It is by driving 100+ miles at a time on the highway in free moving traffic.

 

If you don't mind doing your own suspension/brake/timing belt work or paying for it to be done, go for it.

New LBJs, LCAs, UCAs, shocks, brakes, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, pulleys, inner/outer tie rods, etc.

20+ years on my truck as a daily driver so I should know. My latest dilemma is a new body mount to replace a collapsed one.

 

I looked up the values on kbb and nada. And it’s around 22k trade in value which is around the ball park.

I was looking it as a daily driver and maybe putting around 10-18k a year with mainly city driving. Occasionally taking trips down to the coast or to Houston.

I’m okay with doing some of the easier repairs and maintenance myself such as oil changes and brakes.
And I’m not too sure how it was driven before. Haven’t gotten to see it just yet.
