Hey guys! If anyone has a 2000-2003 4.7 V8 Tundra within reach, can you pop the hood and spin the fan with your hand?

Let me know how many times the fan spins after letting go. I think my fan clutch is going out because it almost feels like it is free-spooling, or at least getting close.

    Thanks ahead.

Actually spun mine this morn and it stops spinning as soon as I’m not spinning it. I was wondering if my fan was going out cause it wasn’t spinning freely.

I think there is a specification for it, I can't find it though. They are supposed to stop almost immediately, at least that is what I think. I'm betting mine is going bad.

I haven't overheated, but I don't want to end up with a cooked engine to find out. I am going broke, I can hardly wait to see what this is going to cost.

Hope it doesn’t break the bank bud. Junkyards are a great resource. Whenever I come across something that’s expensive new, I check local yards and https://www.car-part.com/mobile/index.htm

    good luck

Something like this that is easy to remove and easy to performance check, I'll definitely buy used if that is an option. They are 125 bucks for a factory Toyota replacement :(

That's much better if I can service it :monocle: I never even thought to look into it to be honest.

In prowling around on various web sites, I stumbled on this story about the servicing of the clutch for the fan. I had no idea these units could be serviced.
I had a clutch break on a Chevy ~ it created a lot of noise, so I knew something was wrong.
Of course, for a few bucks I bought a new one and called it a day. I have no idea what a new clutch would cost for a Tundra but the one for the Chevy was very reasonable.

I checked ToyotaPartsDeal.com, where I usually shop, they want 125 bucks! Not really in the budget this month. I am pulling mine apart right now, I think this should be a pretty easy fix :fingerscrossed:

Well, I ended up cracking the casting on mine trying to service it. It was pretty oxidized but I thought I was close, wasn't meant to be I guess.

I pulled one in a junk yard, from a sequoia, but the same engine. This one seems to work much better. They didn't charge me, so I just gave the guy $10, that was generous of them.

By the way, I heard that the color of the fan shaft (orange or green) indicates whether or not you have the towing package. I didn't know that. I have the towing package and mine is orange.
