Since ball has been coming up I'm gonna chime in and talk about our oldest and maybe get some wisdom from the all powerful Mafia Crue!
Our daughter is 6 years old. She's playing on a 6u team (tee ball with 10" practice balls(same density/style as a tee ball)) and has really done well. She's pretty smart and understands direction well. She has been practicing and learning at home when i can get us all home in time to practice hitting, throwing, and fielding.
She was asked to try out for all stars and she was basically doing it as a formality. She was about top 5 to make it. She plays catcher. Coach put her there cuz she's one of the very few that can take direction and implement it into the following plays and keep it up. She's also one of the few that gets in front of the ball to stop it. Every ball is thrown home and only 1 or 2 get past her every game (95%+ it is a bad throw). She enjoys all the action she sees and is still learning it. She's only really complained about the helmet she has to wear, which is just a batting helmet with a face shield on it. She's kinda hard on herself and I can't fault her for that cuz I was the exact same way. I played rec ball all throughout K-12 and played high school ball from 7th grade to senior year.
This is where the possible comments/suggestions come in....
As we're leaving she wanted to stop and watch a high school boys baseball game play because she wanted to watch the catcher. I'm thinking of bringing her to a girls college softball game and try to get her a good view of behind the plate to show and explain what she's doing and why. This seem like a good approach? I'm skeptical about her playing catcher because of her hips and knees. It's basically one of the most under-rated positions in baseball, but pretty much one of the most important, if not THE most important. No one notices a bad catcher until you have a bad catcher.

Planned a little weekend vacation to Manitou Springs, Co. First time testing out the tundra on some off-road trails and thought I would rent a little cabin for the weekend. Picked a nice place so I could have my dogs with me. First few steps inside, smacked my head on the doorframe. No where in the description did it say the house was designed for short people. I’m 6’5 and every doorway comes up to my nose. Go out sightseeing and come back to another knot on my head because I forget to duck when walking around. Bad enough there is no fan in the bedroom and you have to rely on the wind to cool the bedroom down. Probably my last time using Airbnb for a vacation.

 

Nothing special here. Just some tunes and beers in the garage after 11.24 hours of work today.

She was overdue for sure. Can’t believe I never had a blowout.

Yes! You are certainly on the right track. Expose her to any level of the game higher than what she is currently playing. She'll learn little things each time you take her to watch the older players & it will encourage her to strive to be better.
Pitcher & catcher both, together, set the tempo of the game. You're a good dad! The kids will reward your efforts multifold later in your life.

It’s great seeing her interest in the game. I played from pee wee up to senior year in high school myself and I raised both of my sons playing ball. My 4 year old granddaughter is now playing T ball and after hitting the ball she runs after it, trying to field it instead of running to first. It hilarious but she is having fun. She also has attention deficit so 15 minutes into the game she moves from hands on the knees, getting ready to take a grounder to sitting on her butt pilling dirt into a little mound. I’d say your daughter is still young, let her play what she wants and keep encouraging her to enjoy it while you live vicariously through her. I did that last week. Granddaughter played a game on a field that I remember watching my dad play fast pitch softball on when I was a kid. He’s no longer with us, but the game must go on.

 

So…My sense of humor runs along the side where people start to question, “what the hell is wrong with you?” But I couldn’t resist. @Rgross2112 we make sure not to push our kids into anything WE want or did. I've watched people push hard on their kids to follow THEIR dreams instead of their own and you can tell its not the same. As long as she's happy and enjoying it, I'll push her and help her.

I get that and also feel the same. If our kids lost interest in something there was always something else they enjoyed. My oldest played little league then stoped. He came back later to play but that was of his own choosing. Very independent and head strong…. Just like their mother!

Obviously, you’re a good dad and stay involved in your kids life. Keep this going throughout your time with them. The amount of time they will want to spend with you when they are grown is proportional to the amount of time you spent while they were growing up.
Here’s my thoughts;
As long as she interested, take her to as many league games as possible. Don’t just focus on the 2 positions. Take some time explaining the move’s of the 1st baseman, and shortstop (my favorite).
That’s going to help her overall grasp, as well as increasing her enjoyment of the game. What a wonderful age! Both my sons are in their 40’s, so we’re doing other stuff…

 

At a high school game, you'll want to point out mistakes and high-skill habits to make sure she understands what she's looking at. With catching, most success comes in attention to the small stuff. Not sure if position coaching is available where you're at, or in the price range you're interested in investing, but those might be worth the time if they're available - or YouTube videos if that works for her. And at 6, she'll probably change her mind about catching. She'll see the first baseman pull off some great move and get applause on a day she makes more mistakes than her expectations allow, and she'll want to move over; or on the other side of that, she'll wake up one day and feel like she's fully accomplished at C and want the challenge of SS.

You're not just encouraging baseball or sports in general here; you're encouraging her to get passionate about something. It'll be something you don't like at all one of these days, but it'll still be good for her to feel what it's like to put in effort and reach goals. Makes for someone who's thoughtful about their life choices, and happy with them.
