Fairly critical take on how Toyota has repositioned the Tundra

Unless they changed it again, you can get the 6.2 in 4 Chevy trims (RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country) vs 3 GM trims (SLT, AT4, Denali).

I just got out of an 09 Crewmax and into a 3.5 tt hybrid Powerboost F150 4x4 long bed Screw with big screen, electronic locker and 7.2 kw generator for 63k. XLT high package. Heated seats, Nav, fold up or down rear seats with flat rear floor and folding under-seat storage. Apple Car play, android auto, fully integrated infotainment system with all the expected goodies.

For a couple k more than comparable Tundra limiteds I was looking at It’s missing a handful of luxury items like leather and cooled seats and rear center folding armrest. But it has the 570 lb-ft of torque hybrid motor, propower on board and a far more useful interior. Plus still a ton of entertainment and safety features. The Ford is only slightly less luxurious but more functional and better equipped mechanically in my opinion and falls on the general price range of lower end Limiteds I was looking at.

I would GLADLY pay what they're asking for a Limited TRD Off Road for the following:

iForce Max
column shift
6 seater
tiny screen
vinyl flooring (seating too is a bonus)
2k lbs of payload
the Sienna's 1500W inverter in the bed
rear locker

Last two are optional if it puts them underwater on the profit margin.
Call it the WorkForce Max. What's the cheapest color to paint a truck? I'll take it yesterday. Come on, Toyota!!

 

$63K is more than the top TRD off road package in a limited with a hybrid.

 

Around here if you luck out on the locator you *might* be able to find a Limited Crewmax 4x4 with standard 3.5 and no or only 1-2 options added for a few Pennies south of 60 but they are like unicorns. I see You can *build and configure* a Tundra LTD Hybrid 3.5 V6 4x4 for under 60 on the configurator but the question is can you find and buy that truck. I just built and configured a LTD hybid 4x4 TRD pro with only a pano moonroof added like I have on my XLT for 59k. It’s great, then you take your slip of paper around and have the dealers tell you you will see a pig fly past you singing Opera before you ever find that truck. Most of them will be low 60s and up.

 

Here, yes. All of our Toyota dealers are MSRP. So straight off the build site but get that's not everywhere.

 

My experience was Toyota doesn’t seem to put out too many Limiteds with zero to only a couple options because they have done the math and figured most people will want to add a couple more things. So unless you’re super on the ball with that locator and don’t care about color you’re getting a few grand worth of stuff tacked onto whatever you configure when you take that sheet in to do the paperwork.

 

Why not? They are in fact the world richest vehicle manuf at $59.5 billion. Ford is number 8 at $22.6 billion. They could have if they wanted to. They did it when they went from the 2000-06 to the 07.

 

Dealer options added here are majority spray in bed liner and floor mats.

Because they're spending their extra money on solid state batteries and other tech you'll find in the Camry, Prius, Highlander before the Tundra. Toyota makes family sedans and SUV's first and foremost. Trucks, off road SUVs, hot hatchs are purely extra profits so they don't invest huge sums in there - just enough to make them competitive but they learned after the 2nd gen, you make a world beater 1/2 ton and it lasts 3 years which is a game they won't play.

 

I still think they could have put the same effort they put into the 07 into the 22. I think they could have spared a few bucks.

 

they did, its just in a slightly different direction, they aren't aiming for construction workers etc anymore. they are aiming more in the direction of the tacoma owners who need a little bigger truck and capability.

not saying I agree with all this, but it is correct to say that they are marketing this as a lifestyle 1/2 ton, not a work truck.

it still hauls and tows good for what its class is.

 

We all know Toyota will never sell as much as the Big 3, but. They could have put a little more effort into the 22. Lets face it, it not they same as the 1st gen to 2nd gen compared to the 2nd gen to 3rd gen. Also, I have asked this before and still no answer. What are the actual sales of the the Big 3 1/2 tons? Because they group their sales based on their entire truck line up. I have never found actual 1/2 ton sales figures.

there used to be a breakdowns around of the 1/2 ton sales but I dont know where to find them anymore, maybe others do. its still way more than toyota, not even close. Im talking about normal production and times, right now everything is all messed up.

and I think your right when they went from the 1st gen to the 2nd gen, but they were going from a 7/8ths size truck to a real full size so they cant really do that again until they go up the HD market, which they won't do.

what else are they going to do to make it seem like a huge increase, they added payload, towing, and a ton of HP and TQ and also made it lower at 2,400 RPM.

I don't ever see toyota making cool shit like on board generators, etc.

it is what it is, what I want to see first and foremost is the QC issues fixed like yesturday and then lets see if they did what is the most important, toyota level QDR.

so far, Im not seeing that and that's why Im waiting to buy one for now

 

I'd love to know this too. I've only ever found and a few sources claiming that total was all F150s . A F350 here is about the same as a lottery ticket at this point you'd think someone would figure out how many are out there with a little more specificity.

 

I think the above is a lot of it, too. They’re not afraid to nickel and dime ya because someone will buy it anyway

I thought they payload was not that great? Towing, well lets face it, a 1/2 ton has no business towing large amount of weight. Hell my 17 Tacoma could have towed a 27' Contender, just the hull of course, doesn't mean I would tow that monster behind a Tacoma. Hp & Tq is good down low for towing, I will give it that. Now for cool stuff. I couldn't say because stuff that I would want from a Limited or Plat would just mean less incentive for people to buy those trims and stick to the SR5 trim. I am right there with you, QC. Seems like Toyota dropped the ball on this. I have a lease and was looking into leasing the 22, but as I have mentioned before, not a big enough difference from 2nd gen to 3rd gen to justify the MSRP cost + the added cost from a 21 model to the 22. That's a lot of $$$$ for virtually nothing big. Eventually I will switch over because my 20 won't last me that long to want to keep it. eventually I will get the itch to trade. By then everything should be ironed out.

 

Does your XLT have auto AWD?

 

Well aware I'm in the minority. I want a base level HD-capable Tundra.

The iForce Max is already there with torque numbers. It's better than every gas engine HD truck. All it would take is a significant bump on payload and doing away with creature comforts.

 

My Queen would never consent to riding in a truck without ventilated seats. She might....perspire in her nether regions

E locker but no full time. The 5.0 base Lariat I had on order that was a touch below 59 had auto 4wd but an open diff.

 

Mine was slightly disappointed I did not end up with cooled seats or heated wheel but OK with it. Probably would’ve been divorced if I came home without heated seats tho.

My Nav and voice commands are far more useful than the systems in her Acura she’s never used because they’re so counterintuitive but she still likes to talk smack cause my XLT can’t cool her butt.

 

I think you're correct, I couldn't remember if it was available on high XLT or only Lariat and up.
