And have you had any serious mechanical problems?

I am driving cross-country in my new Tundra at the end of next month, but due to other travel I will only have about 1200 miles on it when I start out. Then 2300 miles in three days. And 2300 back a few weeks later.

I see the posts about turbo issues and am a little nervous about turbo blowing out in the middle of Nevada or Wyoming. Should I be worried? Runs perfect so far...

Would love to hear words of reassurance from high miles folks!
    Thanks

I was pretty lucky and got the first Tundra delivered to my local dealership. I took delivery of it on December 15th, 2021.

Right now, I've got 12,425 miles as of this morning, according to my Toyota app. I know there's a few folks out there with plenty more miles than me though.

I've had some random quirks pop up throughout the last 6 months, but nothing major and nothing that has been a warranty issue.

    Only "issues" I've had were:
    • Early on I had random connection issues with wireless CarPlay. A lot of folks dealt with this. I haven't had any connection issues in the last 4+ months. TBH I had forgot that I dealt with this until I started thinking about issues for your question.
    • At about 6k or 7k miles, the truck shut off randomly while I was in a parking lot. I was taking a tight turn at a pretty decent speed and it shut off on me. It happened once and hasn't happened since.
    • At around 3k, I had a DTC pop up on the dash that my radar cruise & LTA sensor were malfunctioning. I shut the engine off then restarted the truck and they were gone. Hasn't happened since.
I'll admit that I haven't been easy on my truck over the miles. In some cases, I've been downright hard on it. I've been off-roading about a dozen times. I've been on a couple of trails where I've had the built-in inclinometer and pitch gauge both pegged, though not at the same time. I've only washed it once since I got it. haha. It's so dusty in the desert that if I did, you wouldn't be able to tell I had washed it by the next day. I park outside.

My wife and I have also been doing some remodeling to our house so I've taken probably 4 overfilled bed loads of random demolition debris to the local dump and had 3 pallets loaded in the bed. I haven't been easy on my bedliner and it's still holding up well. That's why I'm surprised there's been quite a few folks reporting issues with theirs.

If you have specific questions, I'm happy to answer them. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

3,100 miles on mine. It’s been in 4wd a couple of times, and it’s hauled a bed full of mulch.

Only issue I’ve had in all those miles is that it once took my gas gauge nearly ten minutes to realize I’d filled up the tank.

(I’ll be driving from Arkansas to Colorado at the end of June to climb the Crestones, so I’m greatly anticipating my first big road trip + 4x4 road!)

Nothing but love for the truck.
The only issue I have is the weird dimples on the fenders that Toyota is aware of and is going to replace on all the platinums when they have the new part (according to my dealer).

Lots of compliments and very capable.

really besides all warning chimes/buzzers these these seem to have which can get annoying in certain situations, nothing to complain about.
No regrets, tows outstandingly and happy so far.

    6530 miles so far.

Just finished round trip from Charlotte NC to Lancing MI running mostly interstate at posted speed limits up to 70MPH. This round trip got 23MPG and last round trip to Richmond VA got over 24MPG with our 2WD SR5!

This truck is refreshing to drive on long trips, driving through heavy rain today on the interstate and someone up ahead jammed on their brakes. The Tundra handled the emergency stop on wet roads great!

Also towing a 4900 pound travel trailer, great Tow Vehicle, getting from 13 to 16MPG towing, depends on terrain!

No issues, happy we purchased the Tundra!

That is impressive. Reports I have read on the F150 Ecoboost towing a similar load are 10ish.

I think that's pretty typical. I participate on several FB travel trailer towing groups and haven't seen any gas engines from any brand that are reporting much more than 10 mpg towing those big boxes. If the new Tundra can get 16 mpg towing a 4900 lb billboard that's going to crush the standard.

10 is more realistic for a 8’ wide travel trailer unless you are going 55 mph the whole time. I get 10 doing 70 mph with my Ecoboost and a 5500 lb trailer in good conditions.

conditions make a huge difference. Ive been towing my trailer with this truck for 5 years now and have seen anything from 6.7 to 10.8. The Tundra is not getting 16 doing 65-70 mph. There just isnt that much energy in gasoline.

I've read that even the fully electric Rivian has over a 60% range loss with a similar load.

When we purchased our 7' wide Oliver from a couple in MO during 2016, towed it with a 2013 2WD Frontier with 4.0L automatic, the onboard computer indicated over 15MPG while towing across TN on I40. I thought the on board computer was wrong until I divided miles driven by gallons used. We used to tow an all aluminum 2000 pound 7' wide aerodynamic brick and could not get much over 13 MPG with this same Frontier.

I started checking Tundra's fuel economy with miles driven divided by gallons used and found the on board computer to be slightly lower using that process.

Initially after waiting until 1000 miles on the odometer could only get 14MPG towing Ollie in flatter terrain. After 3000 miles the Tundra is getting slightly better than 15MPG on interstates in TN around 60 to 65MPH not using cruise control allowing speed to slow up hills and to gain down hills using 6th, 7th, & 8th gears. I put plenty of effort into throttle control, starting off very easy, with the goal of optimizing fuel MPG.

Saw up to 16MPG at 50 to 55MPH on level back roads in TN towing Ollie.

Towed on grades up to 7 & 8% so far in NC using 45MPH in 5th gear @ 2400RPM up steep grades. Stay in the truck lane up and down steep grades with this rig.

Some folks get better fuel economy than our rig with a diesel powered TV and heavier Ollies. I am very careful with throttle control while driving, part is how they are driven and another part is aerodynamic shape of the trailer. Our Tundra is also 2WD and sometimes when I see a good price on non-ethanol 87, fill the Tundra up with that, too. Keep trailer tire pressures at 50PSI and Tundra's tire pressures over 40PSI. Keep Ollie's weight under 4950 pounds ready to camp and Tundra's weight a couple hundred pounds under GVW with Ollie connected and under both of Tundra's axle maximum weights.

do you remember how you fixed the Bluetooth issues? I just updated the software and mine randomly cuts out for a couple seconds but then will be fine for hours. Sometimes people can’t hear me or I can’t hear them when on the phone. Figured I was just going to let the dealership know on my first service

I really didn't do anything to fix it, per se. I know Toyota released an OTA software update for the head unit taking it up to version 1025 (I think). @ryanwgregg has a thread with all the info that. However, my truck still has yet to receive the update...so that wasn't it. I'm still rocking the same software version 1001 my truck had when I picked it up.

Honestly, I've found the best thing to do is just restart your phone every so often. Every couple(ish) of weeks. I don't know why it helps, but it seems to have done the trick. I spent so much time blaming the truck whenever my phone wouldn't connect that I didn't think it could be my phone's fault. If it ever fails to connect, instead of hard resetting my radio 3-5 times in a row...I just restart my phone and boom it connects just fine. However, I haven't had to do that in awhile.

Not sure if that helps at all, but give it a whirl the next time your phone doesn't want to connect.

Electric trucks are not an answer for towing any meaningful distance. If you hook a travel trailer behind any of them and get stuck in a headwind you would be lucky to get 80 miles. 80 miles is about how much range I have when I start looking for fuel when I am towing with my F150. I start looking around at 3/8 of a tank(13 gallons) and am getting antsy by 1/4 tank(9 gallons).

Electric vehicles use relatively little energy to move but the batteries are also "small" in terms of capacity. They are actually huge and heavy, which is why a Rivian that's about the size of a Ford Ranger weighs 7500 lbs. It's literally as heavy as an F350 crew cab diesel 4x4 with no where near the capabilities.

I drove from New Jersey to Texas, was in Texas for a week driving around then drove from Texas to Orlando, drove around Orlando for about 4 days then drove from Orlando to New Jersey. I drove a total of 5K miles. My truck had 1,100 miles before my trip. Truck is still running good. No issues at all.

Well now that's just cheating, the aerodynamic shape of that trailer as well as your driving habits contribute to your MPG. I have a 29' camp trailer that has a lift kit on it (I didn't want that but it's what they had) and is pretty close to the shape of a box and I was lucky to get 11 mpg pulling it with a Dodge diesel. I imagine my Tundra will be around the 8-10 mpg pulling that brick and I do as you do, I don't haul butt, I check my tire pressures and don't go over 65 mph towing. I just bought a high wall pop up that max's out at 3900 lbs and I got 15 mpg towing it over the Cascade mountains which is pretty impressive. I got this truck knowing it had towing limitations and I don't want to run the hell out of it towing anywhere close to the max rating or I would have gotten another
Ram diesel. I've got 1000 miles on it with the only issue being me figuring out the tech features.

Yep, work hard improving MPG towing and not towing.

With the all aluminum 2000 pound 7' wide travel trailer we had, our 2003 Tacoma had trouble getting up to 60MPH in 5th (5 speed manual 2.4L four cylinder) had to down shift to 4th because of the wind resistance. It towed a 1800 pound boat & trailer in 5th just fine, much less wind resistance.

The reason we purchased our 2022 Tundra was for Tow Vehicle duty and for non towing trips. It's working great for those duties and as local driver, without any issues so far. Our 2016 SR5 4WD 5.7L Tundra got around 12MPG towing the same trailer.

29k and change, no “real” issues but I tend not to be “the sky is falling” type anyway.

About 10 months and 12,500 miles. No mechanical issues whatsoever. Had my 8" Infotainment screen replaced under warranty about 3 months in, and have had a squeak in the dash near the a/c temperature switch ever since. Those are my only complaints so far.

Regularly take it on 250 mile round-trips through some semi-remote areas and never worry about the mechanical reliability.
