Finally started my OEM Tonneau install yesterday after picking it up. All was well until the last bolt, which I noticed didn’t feel right. I look and the head was stripped. I got some Speed Out to try and extract the bolt today, but if that fails, is there anyone with tips on what they’ve done and has this happened to anybody else? I hate Torx with a passion and always will.

I’ve had luck in the past with removing stripped torx by taking a rubber band, stretching it a little and placing it between the bit and screw head. Some times a two person job. Not always successful, but always something I try.

    Update:

After doing all I could, I still can’t get the bolt out. Going to have to take to Toyota next Saturday and have them remove/replace the bolt, and just going to have them install since it’s already there. No other option here, really didn’t want to spend the money on such an easy job, but that’s life.

So I just put the other bed rail back on, and the other four bolts for the one stuck in the meantime (hand tight).

I hate to see you take it to the dealer and spend big $$ on something like that. If you were near me, I'd say bring it over my garage and a 6 pack...we'd get that stripped bolt out for sure.

After dealing with broken studs during engine rebuilds, a stripped bed rail bolt with easy access seems easy by comparison.

I appreciate that greatly! Wish I could, never had this issue before and just can’t get the damn thing out. Everything else was going great, except for that one bolt.

I could feel it wanted to catch, but it just wouldn’t budge. I’m thinking the bolt was over torqued at the factory or QC or something. All the rest were perfectly fine.

I couldn’t get them to turn in the bed rail. There wasn’t enough space to rotate.

A hand impact is useful for jobs like these. Bought one 40 years ago when I started working at the Honda motorcycle dealer to remove case screws. Found out just recently that these weren't actually a #3 Phillips but some odd Japanese design fastener. But, a hammer makes many things equal.

Can you use a dremel or a angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut a notch for a flathead? I’m not familiar with the bolt or how hard it is to get to but it might be an option.

I had two strip out. I took an angle grinder and made a slot, used large flat head screw driver and both came right out.

I thought about it, but I couldn’t fit it in there. I tried extraction kits, Vice grips, hammers, etc to no avail. It’s sadly looking like Toyota is my only option. I put the bed rails and the bolts back on so it looks like normal and like I never even attempted the install, but they’re going to have to get the bolt out for me. Not sure how they will, but I know they have the tools to do so. Since it’s already going to be in there, I’m bringing the entire kit with me and just paying them to do it.

What angers me is this all could have been avoided if it weren’t for cheap Torx bolts that crumble if you touch them.

I guess I could try that too, I’m down for anything at this point. Bed rails and bolts are back in, so it’s like it was before I attempted the install.

I think the dremel is your best bet there. Use the proper angle and make it a large slot so you can fit a fat flathead in there.

I forgot to say, don't pay the dealer to install it! All dealerships around me want $230 to install!! It is super easy and doesn't take long at all. I even resused my stripped bolts once I cut the slot with angle grinder, they screwed right in and I got them plenty tight.

Oh, I know it’s incredibly easy; which is why I was installing myself to begin with. But if I can’t get the bolt out myself, I know they’re the ones who can do it. My logic is if I do end up having to take it in, they’re going to charge me for a replacement bolt, as well as removing it. It’s already in there, so why not give them the trouble. If I can get it out, I want to continue on my own.

You can do it....I have faith in you, LOL

I was pissed at the time, but funny now....I'll share how dumb I am. When I was installing my Extang cover they used ft lbs and In lbs both in the instructions, I didn't catch the change and was like, damn, they want these things TIGHT!! After I stripped the second one I thought, this must be a typo and then realized I'm an idiot. Ultimately, I returned the Extang and installed a Bakflip, didn't use torque wrench this time.

Hahaha, no worries man. At least you got it figured out, and a lot of times when we’re working on a project, we’re so laser focused on getting it done, we don’t catch subtle things. Mine was just trying to loosen the bolt. I got to the second to last bolt on the driver side bed rail, and realized it didn’t feel right. Tried turning, and wouldn’t budge. Noticed it wouldn’t get enough grip because it was slightly stripped. I’m thinking it was torqued down too much.

These didn't have bedliner sprayed on them did they? When I put tie down rings in my bed every one of the torx bolts needed the bedliner picked out of the bolt recesses. PITA. Still hammer inserted the bit before removing.

No spray in bed liner for mine, not sure about the others. Mine is just the composite bed. I will say that they were torqued down pretty hard from the factory, but I managed to get the 9 that were in tact free.

Thanks for highlighting this problem! I’m expecting my OEM tonneau next week :fingerscrossed: so decided after reading this I’d go ahead and loosen mine. I managed to get all but one loose but tried another torx bit from another set with sharper edges and managed to catch the bolt and get the last one loose. They’ll stay loose till the tonneau gets installed now!

I’m glad you had more success than me, but that’s exactly what happened. Got all of them done and on the last one it wouldn’t budge.

There isn’t anything they are going to do that you can’t. Drill it out and use an extractor. The type of bit is irrelevant now. It’s just a bolt stud. If it went in, it’ll come out. Pretty simple. Sucks, but simple.

Tried an extractor and that failed. Can’t get it to bite enough.

Use the biggest one that seems like it’ll fit and hammer it into the drilled hole. It’ll bite. If it doesn’t, hit it harder.
