Not what have I done related, but this seems the best group of guys to ask. Anyone spending what my 2017 Tundra payment was on parts and tools every month on their first gen like me? My amazing money saving idea is kind of backfiring at this point. But I’ve found a way to kill any and all free time I have.

I agree about knocking out the easy stuff. But, that stuff is also great for when you just want to do something. For example, yesterday I wanted to widen my rack stance and essentially moving it back. As a bonus, I also wanted to reinforce my bolts with back plates instead of washers. The rack stance threw some curveballs so all I did was get the legs set. They still need reinforcement. Today I had no family anything. So 0700 wake-up to go get some specialty bolts. And decided today was a fab/weld day. Took all day but it was good timing. Tomorrow I’m going to do easy shit like wiring and bump stop spacers and little tweaks.

Temp fixed it with a bs spring as I didn't have anything better. Wonder how long it might hold.

Not me, but mostly because I already have 99.9% of the tools from a lifetime of working on stuff. If you're not in that same boat, look at it this way, from the perspective of someone who is beyond their mid-life.

Unless you plan on evolving to a lifestyle where you pay others to do all your work for you, those tools will (a) continue to serve you for your lifetime as most of mine have and (b) never lose their value, investment-wise, so relish in the fact that you're making functional purchases that hold their value, and also use this as justification why you should spend that extra 20%, 30%, 50% buying the better tool.

It's not like you're throwing away money on a depreciating asset when you buy tools, as you would be with your 2017. Your 2017 ... would've steadily continued to decline in value (except for fluke used car upticks like the recent one) for the next decade or two.

I've owned a few new cars. Most of what I've owned is at least a couple years old. I've always gotten more joy and far more bang vs. buck out of cars that were at least 10-15 years older.

Anyone know the part number for the nylon tailgate insert that the screws feed into?

I should clarify even though I make young person decisions I’m mid-life/beyond. I could’ve easily kept paying on my ‘17 Tundra and wife’s ‘18 Platinum Armada, but it’s been fun getting some older stuff to drive and work on. And I’m not talking about basic tools as I’m old enough that I’ve got a fair amount. I’m talking about blowing $ on stubby impact wrenches, cordless ratchets, and other unnecessary but fun tools

Is that something that would benefit from a simple starlock, or e-clip? If so, I can mail over an assortment you can try. I've got gaggles. I used to use these a lot when I was repairing vintage turntables.

I'm behind but get the basics (sounds like you did) and then get what you need when it comes up. Over time you will have most of what you need. I don't have stubby wrenches or crow's foot or long precision ratchets (yet), but I make it work. I do have a shit ton of tools. Always got them when I needed them and used them endless times since.

As long as you don't think getting rid of the new truck for an older truck is a young person decision, you're all good in my book

On the other tools, I dunno, I stick by my earlier comments of it being a sound investment, but I'm totally biased. It's at the point now I'm looking for ways to consolidate multiple tools into one, even if that means selling off three tools to buy the one new one that does their jobs. If I inventoried all the crap I have in the shop, it'd probably take a week between the odds and ends, I've resorted to finding younger wrench-savvy people in my life or in the community that need them, or even sending some to other forum members here lately.

Everyone who knows me knows... if you need a tool, just text or call me. I have an open borrow policy as long as you get it back to me within reasonable time and "you break it, you buy it". My tools don't just benefit me. I guess that's just another part of the investment package.

    I say roll with it.

I guess I don't know you, I never knew about this. But I'll never use your generosity, all my tools are "I need it now" and not planed. That's how I got bitchen shit.

Should've said everyone who knows me locally :D

But there've been a couple of times when I've shipped specialty tools to people because it was more cost effective than for them to buy a new one. I have some archaic stuff in my arsenal for non-auto purposes that you won't find elsewhere. Not dissimilar from the ECGS tool that seems to get bounced around a lot on here, maybe?

The original looked like the one on the left. But I think it was kinda wimpy. Trying a windoor lock retainer right now though the spring seems to work halfway decently.

Stuck low b/c already squatting. Leafs need arching. But I am driving the white guy b/c the grey '16 is getting Foxed up. So, yay for new suspension for the truck I drive the most. And boo for the cash I'm probably going to drop at alignment :(

I've tried almost them all. Federal Gold Match (Sierra) 168gr. seems to be the do all. I think there is a 170+ grain I haven't tried. But sub 1/2 MOA on 5? I don't need it.

I found my piece of paper. I've been pretty methodical about forward progress on this truck but it is slow boat and then some due to life getting in the way.

I think I may be insane but I really do have burning love for my '02 and my '05 Taco. The '16 is nice enough I guess but I really need to get the stereo done before I'll say I have real love for it. It is modern and safer-ish and has a back seat for my kids so given all that it's a pretty good truck. But it doesn't make me nearly as excited as a RC for some really stupid unknown reason.

It's a really nice group... I'm assuming that's a 100 yard target. When I ran an ammo test on my Steyr (26" 1:12 barrel) it's preference was the Hornady ELD-X Precision Hunter 178gr. Close second (and much cheaper) was 175gr. Sierra MatchKing. Anything above 180gr. or below 168gr. and it started to open up on me.

Anyhow, there are much worse ways to waste money... Well, I'm not sure what you're running for length and twist rate, but if you haven't already and get a chance maybe give the ELD-X a try and see what you think! Have a good evening.
